Characteristics of earlier atherosclerotic involvement in adolescent patients with Kawasaki disease and coronary artery lesions: significance of gray scale median on B-mode ultrasound

ObjectiveTo test the hypothesis that textural changes in the carotid intima–media complex (IMC) detected by B-mode ultrasound are associated with the difference of remodeling process in earlier atherosclerotic involvement in patients with Kawasaki disease (KD) and coronary artery lesions (CALs).MethodsEighteen patients with KD and CALs (mean age 17.2 years), 17 patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) (mean age 16.9 years) and 15 age-matched healthy controls (Cont) were assessed and compared for carotid intima–media thickness (CIMT), elastic property (E_p), and first- and second-order statistics.ResultsKD showed significantly higher gray scale median (GSM) than FH and Cont. KD and FH showed significantly higher CIMT, entropy and lower angular second moment than Cont, but no significant difference was found between KD and FH.ConclusionHigher GSM in KD may indicate alteration of tissue components and heterogeneity of IMC, suggesting the development of arteriosclerotic vascular remodeling after vasculitis. This is distinct from that of atherosclerosis with lower GSM often observed in FH.     

Russell body gastritis

A 63-year-old woman who presented with chest and back pain underwent an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy which revealed elevated legion in the antrum mucosa. Histologic examinations of gastric biopsies were showing monoclonal proliferation plasma cells containing Russell bodies. Differential diagnosis from B-cell lymphoma and plasmacytoma is difficult, because of monoclonality. Molecular analyses of immunoglobulin heavy chain (IgH) gene demonstrated that gene rearrangement was negative. Thus, diagnosis of Russell body gastritis was made. The Giemsa stains were also showing infection of Helicobacter pylori (H.pylori). After eradication therapy for H.pylori, follow-up upper gastrointestinal endoscopy was performed. She then recovered.     

Structure and glass transition of amorphous materials composed of titanium-oxo oligomers chemically modified with benzoylacetone

Titanium-n-butoxide was hydrolyzed in the presence of benzoylacetone, and the resulting solution was concentrated and dried at 120 or 140 °C to obtain transparent amorphous materials. High-energy X-ray diffraction measurement was conducted at the SPring-8 facility, and the reduced pair distribution function, G(r) was calculated by Fourier transform of the total structure factor, S(Q). The G(r) value suggested that the materials are composed of TiO₆ octahedra linked by corner- and edge-sharing. Low temperature thermomechanical analysis (TMA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were conduced on the materials, where a deflection was detected both in the TMA and DSC curves, revealing the glass transition of the materials. Combined with the previous work based on infrared absorption spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography, the materials are demonstrated to be a new class of glassy materials composed of linked metal-oxygen polyhedra chelated with organic molecules. The materials are innovative due to the high refractive indices that originate in the metal-oxo oligomers and to the shapability given by their thermoplastic properties.

Epstein-Barr Virus-positive Intestinal Diffuse Large B-cell Lymphoma in a Japanese Patient with Celiac Disease: First Reported Case and a Literature Review

A 60-year-old Japanese woman was diagnosed with celiac disease (CeD) and treated with a gluten-free diet. For five years, she had a good clinical course. However, she complained of inappetence and nausea. Colonoscopy revealed ulcerative tumors in the terminal ileum. A histological examination of biopsy specimens from the ulcerative tumor showed diffuse infiltration of large atypical lymphocytes. Immunohistologically, the atypical lymphoid cells were positive for cluster of differentiation (CD)10 and CD20. Many Epstein-Barr virus-encoded small RNA (EBER)-positive atypical lymphocytes were detected by in situ hybridization. This represents the first reported case of Epstein-Barr virus-positive intestinal diffuse large B-cell lymphoma complicated with CeD.     

Cytologic diagnosis of endosalpingiosis with pregnant women presenting in peritoneal fluid: a case report

The cytologic appearance of endosalpingiosis in peritoneal fluid cytology smears has not been extensively described. We report a case of endosalpingiosis in a 29-year-old pregnant female who presented with peritoneal fluid. Dense papillary epithelial clusters with indistinct ciliated cells were found in the Papanicolaou-stained smears. However, long and delicate cilia were obvious in papillary cluster with scanning electron microscopy. Cell nuclei were oval, with finely dispersed chromatin and uniform nuclear membrane. Peritoneal fluid cytology with these findings may be helpful to suggest the probable preoperative diagnosis of endosalpingiosis or benign glandular inclusions involving the pelvic peritoneum.     

Serotonin 2A receptor gene polymorphism and personality traits: no evidence for significant association

A number of studies have observed associations between the serotonin 2A (5-HT2A) receptor and mental disorders. Here, we investigated correlations between polymorphisms (-1438G/A and 102T/C) of the 5-HT2A gene and personality traits in healthy Japanese volunteers (n = 239). The personality traits were evaluated using the Revised NEO Personality Inventory (NEO PI-R). The -1438G/A and 102T/C were in complete linkage disequilibrium. There was a tendency for associations between the genotype and the scores for Agreeableness, Conscientiousness and Neuroticism of the NEO PI-R (P = 0.028, 0.039 and 0.062, respectively; analysis of variance, uncorrected for multiple testing). Subjects with the A/A of -1438G/A (or T/T of 102T/C) appeared to be lower in Neuroticism and higher in Conscientiousness than the rest of the subjects. However, the results were statistically non-significant after Bonferroni's correction for multiple testing of the five scales of the NEO PI-R. Thus, the present study provided no evidence for statistically significant associations between the 5-HT2A polymorphisms and the personality traits.     

Divergence of natural killer cell receptor and related molecule in the decidua from sporadic miscarriage with normal chromosome karyotype

The aim of this cohort study was to investigate immunophenotypic characteristics of natural killer (NK) cells by assessing specific molecules expressed in the decidua of sporadic miscarriages and induced abortions. The deciduae were obtained from 29 consecutively seen women whose pregnancies ended in first trimester miscarriages (MS), and the fetal chromosome karyotype of these MS was analysed. Additionally, 13 deciduae were obtained from induced abortion (IA) with informed consent. The expression of perforin, CD94, CD161, CD158a, CD158b, CD244 on CD3-CD56+NK cells, and perforin on CD3+CD8+ T cells was analysed by flow cytometry. The CD158a (mean+/-SD, 26.2+/-14.7%) and CD94 (50.2+/-25.7%) expressions in MS with normal chromosome karyotype (MSNK; n=11) were significantly decreased as compared with those (41.5+/-19.5%, 71.4+/-20.4%) in MS with abnormal karyotype (MSAK; n=18) and those (44.3+/-21.9%, 80.8+/-17.5%) in IA (n=13). Conversely, the perforin expression on CD3-CD8-CD56+NK cells (76.3+/-11.0%) and CD3+CD8+T cells (30.6+/-9.2%) in MSNK was significantly increased as compared with those (66.8+/-16.6%, 23.6+/-8.7%) in MSAK and those (62.9+/-11.6%, 19.7+/-8.1%) in IA. A positive correlation between CD94 and CD158a expressions on NK cells, negative correlations between CD94 on NK cells and perforin on NK cells/T cells, and between CD158a on NK cells and perforin on T cells were found in the decidua. A divergence of NK cell repertoire in the decidua might be related to aetiology of sporadic MSNK.     

Fine structural and cytochemical observations on the dental epithelial cells during cap enameloid formation stages in Polypterus senegalus, a bony fish (Actinopterygii)

Tooth germs during cap enameloid formation stages in Polypterus senegalus were investigated by transmission electron microscopy and enzyme histo- and cytochemistry. Enameloid formation was divided into three stages: matrix formation, mineralization, and maturation. The enamel organ consisted of the inner dental epithelial cells, stellate reticulum, and outer dental epithelial cells during cap enameloid formation stages, but no stratum intermedium was found. During the matrix formation stage, the tall inner dental epithelial cells contained well-developed Golgi apparatus, abundant cisternae of rough endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria. Spindle-shaped vesicles containing a filamentous structure were seen in the distal cytoplasm. During mineralization and maturation stages, many ACPase positive lysosomes were present in the cytoplasm, whereas the organelles were decreased in number. The infoldings of the distal plasma membrane of the inner dental epithelial cells were visible in the mineralization stage but were not marked in the maturation stage. The activity of nonspecific ALPase, Ca-ATPase, and K-NPPase was detected at the plasma membrane of the inner dental epithelial cells during the stages of mineralization and maturation. The results of fine structure and enzyme cytochemistry suggested that the dental epithelial cells were mainly involved in the degeneration and removal of enameloid matrix and in material transportation during the enameloid mineralization and maturation stages, rather than in the enameloid matrix formation. The results also showed that the structure of the dental epithelial cells in Polypterus was different from that in teleosts and gars, but that the function of the dental epithelial cells was similar to that in teleosts possessing well-mineralized cap enameloid.
