The role of somatic complaints in the diagnosis of depression in children and adolescents

The question of whether somatic complaints are a significant feature of depression independent of anxiety was explored. Structured interview (Kiddie Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School-Age Children) and Child Behavior Checklist data from depressed and nondepressed psychiatric controls were analyzed to explore the interaction of somatic complaints, anxiety, and depression. Seventy percent of the children who met criteria for depression also had significant somatic complaints in contrast to 34% of the controls. Findings revealed that frequency of somatic complaints increased with severity of depression regardless of coexisting anxiety.     

A Simple Nephelometric Method for Measuring the Progressive Motility and Collecting Motile Spermatozoa

A simple method for collection and measurement of the progressive motility of spermatozoa was developed. The procedure consists of the spectrophotometric measurement of the increase in optical absorbance produced by the upward migration of spermatozoa in a high density medium of Ficoll 400. The suspension containing migrated spermatozoa may be used as a purified population of uniformly motile and undamaged spermatozoa.     

False positive-false negative CT scan in late epileptic seizure: a meningioma-glioblastoma association

Summary A false-negative finding on initial CT is reported in a case of supratentorial glioma. This observation was peculiar because the first CT revealed a meningioma which might initially have been related to the clinical symptoms. The term false positive-false negative CT is proposed. The reasons for such CT failures are discussed. The accuracy of clues as to the localization of the glioma provided by EEG is emphasized.     

Wrist flexion as an adjunct to the diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome

The effects of five minutes of wrist flexion on median motor and sensory evoked potential latencies in 87 individuals were studied. Nineteen subjects had carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) as diagnosed by increased median nerve latencies across the wrist, and 68 had values in the normal range and were assigned to the control group. A slight prolongation of up to 0.5m sec of evoked potential latencies was observed in both groups after flexion, but the differences between the two groups were not significant to establish the value of adding wrist flexion to conventional screening methods.     

Differential assessment of the health status of preschool children in risk groups]

Health status of the underschool children from the second health group, which with having some morphofunctional changes, (503 persons) was studied. The key changes were postural, cardiovascular, neuropsychic changes. The lysozyme level in saliva is the informative index related to the health status of underschool children.
