Dyke Postmortem CT and Award. autopsy in perinatal intracranial hemorrhage

To improve interpretation of intracranial computed tomographic findings in vivo, postmortem computed tomography was correlated directly with autopsy findings in 105 specimens of human stillborn and live-birth infants, ranging in age from gestational week 13 to postnatal month 18. This study identifies the typical computed tomographic appearance of intradural and other hemorrhages, attempts to correlate the type of hemorrhage with brain maturity, and documents that postmortem computed tomography is useful to the neuropathologist as a supplementary method complementing the traditional postmortem examination.     

Gyrate atrophy of the choroid and retina. Early findings

Examination of two sisters ages 2 years 10 months and 6 years four months with gyrate atrophy of the choroid and retina provided an opportunity for detailed clinical investigation. Although the chorioretinal lesions were confined to the peripheral retina in the older case and were quite minimal in the younger case, there was electroretinographic evidence of marked involvement of the cone and rod systems. These cases offer an opportunity to assess an arginine restricted diet in preventing the progress of the disease.     

Xanthomatous neuropathy of liver

A 36-year-old man with juvenile-onset diabetes mellitus developed cholestatic hepatitis of unknown cause, possibly drug-induced. He remained jaundiced for four months, until he died unexpectedly. At autopsy, severe and macroscopically identifiable xanthomatous neuropathy was found in the liver; it involved the unmyelinated nerves in the hilus and in all portal tracts examined. Microscopic evidence of minimal extrahepatic involvement of unmyelinated nerves was also found. Somatic nerves were affected by diabetic neuropathy but not by xanthomatous neuropathy. The condition seems to be a rare complication of diseases that are characterized by accumulations of lipids.     

Phase II trial of menogaril in advanced colorectal cancer

Summary Menogaril, a new semisynthetic anthracycline antibiotic, was administered to 35 patients with advanced colorectal cancer. The drug was infused over 2 hr at a dose of 160 mg/sqm or 200 mg/sqm repeated every 4 weeks. Twenty-seven patients were evaluable for response and no objective responses were achieved. Myelosuppression, only leukopenia, was usually of mild-moderate degree and occurred in 63% of the patients. Twenty-seven percent of the patients experienced severe leukopenia. Local erythema and phlebitis were frequently observed and were severe in 13% of the patients. Nausea/vomiting (66%) and alopecia (50%) were of mild-moderate degree.This study suggests that menogaril at these doses and schedule had no activity in advanced colorectal cancer.for the EORTC Early Clinical Trials Group (EORTC/ECTG)     

Monoclonal antibodies recognizing T-cells (Leu 1) and transferrin receptor (OKT 9) crossreact with malignant B-cells of distinct differentiation stages

The present study was carried out to determine the reactivity of Leu 1 and OKT 9 mouse monoclonal antibodies with B-cell samples obtained from 99 patients suffering from non-Hodgkin lymphomas of various B-type entities classified according to the Kiel-nomenclature. It could be demonstrated that both antibodies--previously known to display anti-T-cell reactivity--cross-react with several types of malignant B-cell. Leu 1 shows preference for membrane IgM and mouse erythrocyte receptor-bearing cells, whereas OKT 9 was expressed on malignant B-cells reflecting the terminal phase of B-cell ontogeny.     

Interdisciplinary education for health care professionals.

As the interdisciplinary approach to health care becomes more important, new approaches to interdisciplinary education for health professionals are needed. This article presents objectives for interdisciplinary learning and describes one such course designed to deal with the problem of child abuse.     

Chronic vitamin A intoxication in adults. Hepatic, neurologic and dermatologic complications

Two cases of chronic vitamin A intoxication in adults are described, and the literature is reviewed. Hepatocellular damage, portal fibrosis and eventual cirrhosis may result from chronic vitamin A intoxication in man. Neurologic complications are frequent and consist predominantly of increased intracranial pressure, muscle stiffness aggravated by exercise, and mental changes. Teratogenic effects have been documented in animal experiments and affect primarily the development of the central nervous system. Large doses of vitamin A, if prescribed at all for dermatologic conditions, should be given only for limited periods under close medical supervision and should not be given during pregnancy.
