Former industrial sites are often reclaimed for new homes and other occupational uses. Such sites may still contain toxic chemicals that could put the health of the community at risk. The persistence of these residual chemicals and their effects on human health must not be underestimated. Hence, there is a need to analyze such sites to ensure that the public health will not be put at risk. It is also essential that the levels of release of heavy metals into the environment be monitored and regulated. In this study the lead (Pb) concentration in soil from a small 15th-century industrial site was determined to assess and evaluate its occupational and environmental health implications. Concentrations of Pb measured by atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) and inductively coupled plasma-emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) techniques were 4,298.755 mg/L (SD 0.316; RSD 0.5%) and 4,300 mg/L (SD 0.3809; RSD 0.8%), respectively, both above the safe limit. It is concluded that reclaiming a disused industrial site without adequate soil analysis and proper remediation would be likely to pose occupational and environmental health risks.  相似文献

Oxides of nitrogen have been implicated in a vast number of environmental and occupational health effects, some of which lack concrete mechanisms. Whereas certain compelling pieces of evidence link a particular nitrogen oxide to a particular adverse health effect, other reports seem to implicate virtually all the oxides in one form of toxic process or the other. Such diversity has probably emerged because each oxide of nitrogen possesses a different oxidation state, in which each form exerts different important levels of biological activity. Most important, each nitrogen oxide readily interconverts into another oxide at a very fast rate. This property of rapid interconvertibility poses problems to researchers in identifying with great confidence the actual oxide of nitrogen that is responsible for a specific occupational and environmental health effect. This paper reviews the complex nature of the nitrogen oxides (represented collectively as NOX) to explore the extent to which their acute or chronic exposure could be associated with toxicity. The nomenclature of the nitrogen oxides is outlined as a necessity for clarity and simplicity in understanding their reactions and interconvertibility and how they affect health. The natural occurrence and sources of occupational and environmental exposures and effects are critically evaluated and analyzed.  相似文献

The goal of this study was to examine the adult surgical emergencies seen at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH), Nnewi, with a view to proffering preventive solutions where appropriate and improving outcome. From the register of patients seen at the Casualty department and from the operations register in the main operation room of NAUTH, names and hospital numbers of adult patients treated as emergencies over a 5-year period, from 7 September 1998 to 6 September 2003, were obtained. The hospital folders were then retrieved from the Records Department. From each folder, the following details about each patient were extracted: age, sex, diagnosis at presentation, causative factors, treatment given, and outcome. A total of 902 adult patients were treated during the period. The commonest emergency operation was appendectomy for acute appendicitis in 139 patients (97 women and 42 men), followed closely by road traffic accidents (RTAs) involving 137 patients (103 men and 34 women). Gunshot injuries, which resulted mainly from armed robbery attacks, accounted for 127 cases. More men (113) sustained gunshot injuries than women (14). Of the 92 cases of acute intestinal obstruction seen, 62 occurred in women and 30 in men. Some 126 men presented with acute urinary retention, and two others presented with priapism. Governments at various levels should provide modern diagnostic tools for the accurate preoperative diagnosis of surgical emergencies in hospitals. Governments should also inculcate strict discipline into drivers using the highways, particularly in relation to abuse of alcohol and drugs. Good roads and adequate security should be provided for the people. The need for Pre-Hospital Care for the efficient evacuation of accident victims is emphasized. These measures will help to improve the management and outcome of surgical emergencies, and decrease the number of surgical emergencies resulting from RTAs and gunshot wounds.  相似文献

Study of the epidemiology of invasive infections caused by encapsulated Haemophilus influenzae has been complicated by the poor sensitivity and specificity of the serologic assays used to identify specific capsular polysaccharides. The population structure of these bacteria is highly clonal, however, and serotype is highly correlated with other genetic characteristics. We sought to determine if alleles of the highly conserved phosphoglucose isomerase (pgi) gene correspond to the serotypes of encapsulated H. influenzae strains. pgi alleles of 52 well-characterized encapsulated H. influenzae isolates were amplified by PCR, sequenced, and compared to one another and to additional previously reported H. influenzae pgi alleles. Overall, 83% of the strains possessed pgi alleles associated with the major serotype a, b, e, and f clonotypes that cause the most invasive disease in the United States. Six strains (four type a and two type f) had unusual pgi alleles, which suggested that these strains belonged to less common clonotypes of encapsulated bacteria or were actually nontypeable strains. pgi genotyping may provide a simple and stable surrogate for capsular serotyping. Further studies correlating pgi typing with the expression of capsule are likely to increase our understanding of the epidemiology and pathogenesis of these infections.  相似文献

Cryptosporidium sp. is a significant cause of diarrheal disease, particularly in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients in developing countries. We recently cloned and sequenced several alleles of the highly polymorphic single-copy Cryptosporidium parvum gene Cpgp40/15. This gene encodes a precursor protein that is proteolytically cleaved to yield mature cell surface glycoproteins gp40 and gp15, which are implicated in zoite attachment to and invasion of enterocytes. The most-striking feature of the Cpgp40/15 alleles and proteins is their unprecedented degree of sequence polymorphism, which is far greater than that observed for any other gene or protein studied in C. parvum to date. In this study we analyzed nucleic acid and amino acid sequence polymorphism at the Cpgp40/15 locus of 20 C. parvum isolates from HIV-infected South African children. Fifteen isolates exhibited one of four previously identified genotype I alleles at the Cpgp40/15 locus (Ia, Ib, Ic, and Id), while five displayed a novel set of polymorphisms that defined a new Cpgp40/15 genotype I allele, designated genotype Ie. Surprisingly, only 15 of these isolates exhibited concordant type I alleles at the thrombospondin-related adhesive protein of Cryptosporidium and Cryptosporidium oocyst wall protein loci, while five isolates (all of which displayed Cpgp40/15 genotype Ic alleles) displayed genotype II alleles at these loci. Furthermore, the last five isolates also manifested chimeric genotype Ic/Ib or Ic/II alleles at the Cpgp40/15 locus, raising the possibility of sexual recombination within and between prototypical parasite genotypes. Lastly, children infected with isolates having genotype Ic alleles were significantly older than those infected with isolates displaying other genotype I alleles.  相似文献
