Caudal epidural anesthesia during surgery of the lower extremities in traumatology and orthopedics]

One hundred and forty operations and eleven manipulations on all the segments of the lower extremities have been performed under caudal epidural anesthesia, i.e. by forming in the caudal canal a dense infiltrate using lidocaine or trimecaine solutions prepared on hypotonic solvent supplemented by microdoses of adrenalin and calcium chloride.     

The effect of the surgical trauma on the postoperative course in duodenal ulcer patients]

The effect of various types of operative interventions on the course of the early postoperative period was studied in 419 patients with duodenal ulcer. The blood biochemical values and hemodynamic parameters were studied. The indications for operation were absolute in 128 and relative in 291 patients. It was established that under conditions of a specialized medical institution the negative aspects of surgical treatment of duodenal ulcer may be brought to minimum both in patients with absolute and in those with relative indications for operation.     

Urokinase in gastrointestinal tract bleeding

Selective urokinase infusion into the superior mesenteric artery allowed the accurate determination of the site of small bowel bleeding in a patient with recurrent lower gastrointestinal bleeding who bled despite resective surgery and who had negative findings on four angiograms. Fibrinolytic agents are useful in rare cases in which the need for successful and accurate diagnosis outweighs the risks of reactivating the bleeding.
