Evaluation of the Radiation Shielding Properties of a Tellurite Glass System Modified with Sodium Oxide

In this study, the X-ray and gamma attenuation characteristics and optical properties of a synthesized tellurite–phosphate–sodium oxide glass system with a composition of (85 − x)TeO₂–10P₂O₅–xNa₂O mol% (where x = 15, 20, and 25) were evaluated. The glass systems we re fabricated by our research group using quenching melt fabrication. The shielding parameters of as-synthesized systems, such as the mass attenuation coefficient (MAC), linear attenuation coefficient (LAC), effective atomic number (Z_eff), half-value layer (HVL), tenth value layer (TVL), mean free path (MFP), and effective electron density (N_eff) in a wide energy range between 15 keV and 15 MeV, were estimated using well-known PHY-X/PSD software and recently developed MIKE software. Herein, the optical parameters of prepared glasses, such as molar volume (V_M), oxygen molar volume (V_O), oxygen packing density (OPD), molar polarizability (αm), molar refractivity (R_m), reflection loss (R_L), and metallization (M), were estimated using MIKE software. Furthermore, the shielding performance of the prepared glasses was compared with that of commonly used standard glass shielding materials. The results show that the incorporation of sodium oxide into the matrix TeO₂/P₂O₅ with an optimum concentration can yield a glass system with good shielding performance as well as good optical and physical properties, especially at low photon energy.     

Comparison of radiographic and magnetic resonance imaging findings of early osteoarthritis of the rabbit knees: an experimental study

The objectives of the present study were to describe radiographic and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of early osteoarthritis and their relationships at the same time. A total number of ten rabbits were used and randomly divided into two equal groups. In one group, cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) of the left knee was transected to produce experimental osteoarthritis and in the other group, only the articular capsule was entered as sham operation (arthrotomy group). All of the left knees were examined by MRI and radiography before operation to exclude preexisting abnormalities and serve as control. One month postoperation, two conventional radiographic views and MR imaging were performed under general anesthesia. Statistical analysis of the MRI results revealed that there was a significant difference between the CCL-transected group with arthrotomy and control groups. There was no significant difference in the radiographic findings between the operated, arthrotomy and control groups. It was concluded that osteoarthritic changes of the joints can be detectable 1?month postinjury by MRI. Meniscal degeneration and subchondral bone irregularity are detectable diagnostic signs.     

Factor Structure of the Urdu Version of the Spence Children's Anxiety Scale in Pakistan

Spence Children's Anxiety Scale (SCAS) is one of the most commonly used self-report questionnaires to measure symptoms of anxiety disorders in adolescents. Despite its common use, studies that examine the psychometric properties of SCAS in Pakistan is lacking. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the psychometric properties of the Urdu translated version of the SCAS among adolescents in Pakistan. A total of 1277 students (708 boys and 569 girls), aged 13 to17 years, who had been recruited from 13 schools in Rawalpindi, Pakistan participated in the study. The mean overall anxiety score was significantly higher in girls than males on all the SCAS subscales except for obsessive compulsive disorder. The internal consistency of the Urdu SCAS was good. Confirmatory factor analyses supported six separate factor structures. Results of the study are discussed with reference to the sociocultural milieu of Pakistan and culture sensitive conceptualization of anxiety and its subtypes.

Synthesis and antiviral activity of benzimidazolyl- and triazolyl-1,3,5-triazines

A novel series of 1,3,5-triazine analogs was successfully synthesized through conjugation with benzimidazole or 1,2,4-triazole derivatives via a methylenethio linker. The new analogs were in vitro evaluated against HSV-1 in Vero cells; among these analogs, two compounds exhibited good effect in inhibiting HSV-1 replication (for compound 5p: EC₅₀ = 3.5 μg/ml, SI = 358; for compound 5r: EC₅₀ = 5.0 μg/ml, SI = 300) in comparison to acyclovir.
