Blocking layers are used to reduce leakage current in amorphous selenium detectors. The effect of the thickness of the blocking layer on the presampling modulation transfer function (MTF) and on dark current was experimentally determined in prototype single-line CCD-based amorphous selenium (a-Se) x-ray detectors. The sampling pitch of the detectors evaluated was 25 microm and the blocking layer thicknesses varied from 1 to 51 microm. The blocking layers resided on the signal collection electrodes which, in this configuration, were used to collect electrons. The combined thickness of the blocking layer and a-Se bulk in each detector was approximately 200 microm. As expected, the dark current increased monotonically as the thickness of the blocking layer was decreased. It was found that if the blocking layer thickness was small compared to the sampling pitch, it caused a negligible reduction in MTF. However, the MTF was observed to decrease dramatically at spatial frequencies near the Nyquist frequency as the blocking layer thickness approached or exceeded the electrode sampling pitch. This observed reduction in MTF is shown to be consistent with predictions of an electrostatic model wherein the image charge from the a-Se is trapped at a characteristic depth within the blocking layer, generally near the interface between the blocking layer and the a-Se bulk.  相似文献

Background: The aim of this study was to quantify the stabilizing properties of a 3-dimensional (3D)-printed short-arm cast and compare those properties with traditional fiberglass casts in a cadaveric subacute distal radius fracture model. Methods: A cadaveric subacute fracture model was created in 8 pairs of forearms. The specimens were equally allocated to a fiberglass cast or 3D-printed cast group. All specimens were subjected to 3 biomechanical testing modalities simulating daily life use: flexion and extension of digits, pronation and supination of the hand, and 3-point bending. Between each loading modality, radiological evaluation of the specimens was performed to evaluate possible interval displacement. Interfragmentary motion was quantified using a 3D motion-tracking system. Results: Radiographic assessment did not reveal statistically significant differences in radiographic parameters between the 2 groups before and after biomechanical testing. A statistically significant difference in interfragmentary motion was calculated with the 3-point bending test, with a mean difference of 0.44 (±0.48) mm of motion. Conclusions: A statistically significant difference in interfragmentary motion between the 2 casting groups was only identified in 3-point bending. However, the clinical relevance of this motion remains unclear as the absolute motion is less than 1 mm. The results of this study show noninferiority of the 3D-printed casts compared with the traditional fiberglass casts in immobilizing a subacute distal radius fracture model. These results support the execution of a prospective randomized clinical trial comparing both casting techniques.  相似文献

Background

Chronic renal failure is a progressive and irreversible loss of kidney function, and the hemodialysis (HD) is one of the most common modalities in this regard. Oxidative stresses [like interleukin-8 (IL-8) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α)] and inflammation are the main risk factors associated with cardiovascular diseases and other complications in many organs in hemodialysis patients; meanwhile, antioxidants like alpha lipoic acid (ALA) may reduce the oxidative stress markers and the levels of inflammatory cytokines, so can improve of the patient’s quality of life.

Methods

In this randomized clinical trial study, 60 HD patients were randomly categorized in two case and control groups. Case group received a daily capsule of 600 mg of ALA supplementation for 8 weeks, and the control group received placebo capsules daily. The serum level of IL-8 and TNF-α was measured in both groups before and after the intervention.

Results

There were no significant differences in age, gender, duration of dialysis, and causative factor for dialysis between both groups (P > 0.05). The mean of IL-8 and TNF-α after the intervention in case group was 26.20 ± 15.34 and 21.25 ± 9.61, respectively; the difference between both groups was not statistically significant (P > 0.05).

Conclusion

Based on the better feeling and other beneficial effects of ALA were found in our study; we can conclude that it is a beneficial and recommended supplement, especially, for diabetic and dialysis patients.  相似文献

The small number of progenitor cells is the major limitation to the use of umbilical cord blood (UCB) for the transplantation of adults. We tested the hypothesis that two units transplanted simultaneously could each contribute to haematopoietic reconstitution. A patient with advanced acute lymphocytic leukaemia received a mismatched, unrelated UCB transplant using units from two donors after conditioning. The recipient achieved a complete remission without graft-versus-host disease. Double chimaerism was documented in several leucocyte subpopulations; both units contributed to haematopoiesis until relapse. Triple chimaerism was present from relapse until death due to leukaemia. This approach may potentially improve UCB transplantation outcome for adults lacking a histocompatible donor.  相似文献

BackgroundGastric cancer (GC) is a leading cause of cancer-related death in the world and most patients have advanced disease upon presentation. The effect of age on prognosis in GC is controversial. We aimed to determine the impact of age on survival in patients with GC.MethodsThis was a retrospective study of the medical records of Lebanese patients diagnosed with GC at the American University of Beirut Medical Center (AUBMC) between 2005 and 2014. Patients were divided into young (<65 years) and older groups (≥65 years). A multivariate analysis was done to determine the independent predictors of survival. Kaplan-Meier method was used for analysis of long-term survival outcomes.ResultsThe sample consisted of 156 patients. The mean age was 62.15 (SD 13.54). Most patients presented with stage 4 disease (62.2%) and poorly differentiated histology (66.4%). The most common symptoms were abdominal pain and weight loss. On bivariate analysis, advanced stage (P=0.02) and higher grade (P=0.04) were associated with increased mortality. Patients <65 years of age were significantly more likely to have poorly differentiated tumours, while patients ≥65 years had more comorbidities (P=0.001). The 5-year DFS were 35% and 37% for patients <65 years of age and ≥65 years of age, respectively (P=0.15).ConclusionsHigher grade and advanced stage are associated with worse survival in patients with GC, but age did not seem to have an impact. Screening high risk patients and early diagnosis are necessary to improve survival.  相似文献

Due to SARS‐COV‐2 (COVID‐19) pandemic and its catastrophic impact on society, the FDA granted emergency use authorization for some vaccines. Possible rare side effects could not have been observed in this relatively short period. We are reporting an elderly lady with multiple comorbidities who presented with progressive lower limb weakness that started seven days after receiving the first dose of the COVID‐19 vaccine. The electrodiagnostic study showed demyelinating polyneuropathy with secondary axonal degeneration consistent with Guillain–Barré syndrome. We ruled out other possible causes for GBS, suggesting a postvaccine nature for her presentation. The patient received intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) for five days and gradually improved, which supports our initial diagnosis.  相似文献
