The writers examine the course of Greek ophthalmology from the Hellenistic period to the foundation of the first universities (19th century). In particular, the study refers to Galen, Antyllus, the Byzantine doctors Oribasius, Aetius of Ameda, Paul of Aegina, Alexander of Tralles, Nonnus Theophanes, Theophilus Protospatharius, Michael Psellos, Meletius Monachus, Nemesius bishop of Emeses and John Actuarius. Sixty-three mallards were fed one of ten poly(methyl methacrylate) based synthetic grit formulations containing varying concentrations of a proposed wildlife contraceptive (nicarbazin), plasticizer (acetyl tributylcitrate) and/or cross-linking agent (1,4-butanediol diacrylate). Release characteristics of the contraceptive agent were monitored for the purpose of developing a contraceptive formulation for control of pest waterfowl in urban settings. The addition of plasticizer increased the erosion rate (t(1/2)=0.97-2.85 days), cross-linking the polymer matrix slightly decreased the erosion rate (t(1/2)=4.45-5.05 days) and increasing the concentration of the contraceptive agent increased the erosion rate (t(1/2)=3.3 and 9.9 days at 60% and 7.5% active ingredient, respectively). The larger and smaller grit pieces had longer half lives at 11.0 and 11.6 days, respectively while the mid sized grit had a half life of 4.95 days. Control grit had a half life of 12.7 days based on weight loss. Analysis of blood and feces for monitoring release from the grit and approximate indirect plasma levels of the active ingredient proved feasible.  相似文献

Electrical coupling is widespread in developing nervous systems and plays a major role in circuit formation and patterning of activity. In most reported cases, such coupling between rhythmogenic neurons tends to synchronize and enhance their oscillatory behavior, thereby producing monophasic rhythmic output. However, in many adult networks, such as those responsible for rhythmic motor behavior, oscillatory neurons are linked by synaptic inhibition to produce rhythmic output with multiple phases. The question then arises whether such networks are still able to generate multiphasic output in the early stage of development when electrical coupling is abundant. A suitable model for addressing this issue is the lobster stomatogastric nervous system (STNS). In the adult animal, the STNS consists of three discrete neural networks that are comprised of oscillatory neurons interconnected by reciprocal inhibition. These networks generate three distinct rhythmic motor patterns with large amplitude neuronal oscillations. By contrast, in the embryo the same neuronal population expresses a single multiphasic rhythm with small-amplitude oscillations. Recent findings have revealed that adult-like network properties are already present early in the embryonic system but are masked by an as yet unknown mechanism. Here we use computer simulation to test whether extensive electrical coupling may be involved in masking adult-like properties in the embryonic STNS. Our basic model consists of three different adult-like STNS networks that are built of relaxation oscillators interconnected by reciprocal synaptic inhibition. Individual model cells generate slow membrane potential oscillations without action potentials. The introduction of widespread electrical coupling between members of these networks dampens oscillation amplitudes and, at moderate coupling strengths, may coordinate neuronal activity into a single rhythm with different phases, which is strongly reminiscent of embryonic STNS output. With a further increase in coupling strength, the system reaches one of two final states depending on the relative contribution of inhibition and inherent oscillatory properties within the networks: either fully synchronized and dampened oscillations, or a complete collapse of activity. Our simulations indicate that, beginning from either of these two states, the emergence of distinct adult networks during maturation may arise from a developmental decrease in electrical coupling that unmasks preexisting adult-like network properties.  相似文献

Anorectal function in the solitary rectal ulcer syndrome   总被引:8,自引:6,他引:2  
The anorectal function of nine patients with solitary rectal ulcer syndrome (SRUS) (5 F: 4 M, median age, 27 (range, 19–41 years) and nine control subjects (5 F: 4 M, median age, 47 (35–66)P<0.01) has been investigated by a new technique that radiologically visualizes the anorectum during voiding of a semisolid contrast medium, while simultaneously measuring intrarectal pressure and anal sphincter EMG activity. A degree of rectal prolapse was demonstrated in eight of the SRUS patients; six of these lesions were clinically occult. Abnormal failure of the anal sphincter to relax on voiding was present in seven of the SRUS patients. These abnormalities resulted in the SRUS patients requiring a greater increase in intrarectal pressure (median, 100 cm water) to void than the control subjects (median, 65 cm water,P<0.01). This combination of high intrarectal pressure and rectal prolapse during straining seems to be the cause of SRUS This work was supported by a grant from the Medical Research Council.  相似文献

The long-held belief that degeneration of the cholinergic basal forebrain was central to Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathogenesis and occurred early in the disease process has been questioned recently. In this regard, changes in some cholinergic basal forebrain (CBF) markers (e.g. the high affinity trkA receptor) but not others (e.g., cortical choline acetyltransferase [ChAT] activity, the number of ChAT and vesicular acetylcholine transporter-immunoreactive neurons) suggest specific phenotypic changes, but not frank neuronal degeneration, early in the disease process. The present study examined the expression of the low affinity p75 neurotrophin receptor (p75(NTR)), an excellent marker of CBF neurons, in postmortem tissue derived from clinically well-characterized individuals who have been classified as having no cognitive impairment (NCI), mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and mild AD. Relative to NCI individuals, a significant and similar reduction in the number of nucleus basalis p75(NTR)-immunoreactive neurons was seen in individuals with MCI (38%) and mild AD (43%). The number of p75(NTR)-immunoreactive nucleus basalis neurons was significantly correlated with performance on the Mini-Mental State Exam, a Global Cognitive Test score, as well as some individual tests of working memory and attention. These data, together with previous reports, support the concept that phenotypic changes, but not frank neuronal degeneration, occur early in cognitive decline. Although there was no difference in p75(NTR) CBF cell reduction between MCI and AD, it remains to be determined whether these findings lend support to the hypothesis that MCI is a prodromal stage of AD.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Pearly penile papules are angiofibromas found on the corona and sulcus of the glans penis. While these represent a benign condition, psychological and cosmetic concerns often prompt patients to seek therapeutic removal of these lesions. Multiple therapeutic modalities have been reported; however, use of CO2 laser has proven to be the most effective to date. OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the efficacy of CO2 laser in treating pearly penile papules. METHODS: Case report. RESULTS: We report the successful treatment of pearly penile papules in an African American man with CO2 laser. CONCLUSION: The use of CO2 laser is an effective treatment for pearly penile papules.
