3D printing has rapidly developed and been applied in forensic science due to its use in creating demonstrations for courts of law. Much of the literature on this specific topic has focused on the use of 3D printed models in academia, the potential influence on a jury, and its use as a long-term documentation process, but with few actual forensic case examples. This paper offers an insight into the development of 3D printing in forensic practice and how 3D printing is currently being used in the criminal justice system in England and Wales.

A series of case reports were gathered from multiple police forces and forensic practitioners in the UK to identify how 3D printing was being used. These discussions established who was requesting 3D printed exhibits, what type of technologies were being utilised, what type of exhibits were being printed, and resulting feedback for the use of 3D printed material within a criminal case. As a result, this research demonstrates the current use of 3D printing in England and Wales, discussing the associated cases that have been known to incorporate 3D prints. Likewise, this work explores the limitations that have been encountered by forensic practitioners and identifies a series of research questions that should be considered in future investigations.

BackgroundVisual hallucinations (VH) in Parkinson's disease (PD) are associated with PD dementia and have been related to cognitive impairments in non-demented PD patients. Reports on the specific cognitive domains affected are conflicting. The aim of the present study was to investigate the presence of specific cognitive impairments in non-demented PD patients with VH, compared to those without VH.MethodsWe compared the clinical characteristics and neuropsychological test scores of 31 non-demented PD patients with VH with those of 31 PD patients without VH that were carefully matched for sex, age, disease duration and educational level. Several non-motor symptoms, including depression, anxiety and sleep disturbances, were also taken into account, as these may influence cognitive performance.ResultsThe PD with VH group performed significantly worse on the Trail Making Test part A (p = 0.01) and the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test, immediate recall (p = 0.01). In addition, PD patients with VH were more anxious, more depressed and reported more sleep disturbances. Verbal learning scores were not associated with levels of anxiety, depression or sleep disruption, whereas worse Trail Making Test A performance was associated with concomitant sleep disturbances.ConclusionsIn non-demented PD patients, the presence of VH is associated with a cognitive profile characterized by impairments in verbal learning and probably attention. Since these cognitive functions are believed to be non-dopaminergic mediated functions, the present results support the hypothesis that multiple neurotransmitter systems, other than dopamine, contribute to the pathophysiology of VH in PD.  相似文献

Purpose

The new generation of 3TMRI has improved spatial and time resolutions, which are favourable in imaging of the renal vasculature. In this study, we have compared the imaging findings of the renal blood vessels using 3TMRI and CT with intraoperative assessment of the renal vasculature as gold standard.

Methods

This prospective study was approved by the local ethical committee. Between 4/2011 and 12/2011, 80 patients with renal tumours underwent 3TMRA (angiography) (Magnetom SKYRA 3T, Siemens). Twenty of the patients were also examined with CT AG. The results of the CTA- and MRA-imaging studies were correlated with the intraoperative assessment of the renal vessels.

Results

Seventy patients (87.5 %) had a detailed intraoperative assessment of the renal vessels. The sensitivities for CTA and MRA were 88.2 and 88.6 %, respectively. All discrepancies between imaging studies and intraoperative findings were due to inability to identify small polar vessels. The results of MRA were concordant with CTA in 85.0 % of cases. The (three) discrepancies between MRI and CT were due to failure of MRI in identifying small polar vessels.

Conclusions

(1) 3TMRA gives detailed information about the renal vasculature including its topographical anatomy. (2) With MRI, small aberrant vessels are more frequently missed than with CTA. (3) CTA remains the gold standard. However, MRA may be used for planning of laparoscopic operations. (4) The quality of the 3D reconstruction is highly depending on the skills of the radiologist.  相似文献

We have developed a database of lymphoid polypeptides detected by two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis to aid in studies of leukemogenesis and of mutation affecting protein structure. In prior studies, we observed a 19-kDa phosphopolypeptide which was induced with proliferation in mature T cells and constitutively expressed in immature thymocytes. In this report we describe the identification of this polypeptide as the phosphorylated form of dUTPase (EC 3.6.1.23), following cDNA cloning of the gene, based on a partial amino acid sequence of the phosphopolypeptide. Studies of the expression and phosphorylation of dUTPase in human T cells indicate that accumulation and phosphorylation of dUTPase in mature T cells occur in a cell cycle-dependent manner. Interestingly, noncycling immature thymocytes express constitutively high levels of phosphorylated and unphosphorylated dUTPase. These results suggest an important role for dUTPase in immature thymocytes that is independent of proliferation.  相似文献

Human and rhesus monkey platelets secrete at least two antiheparin proteins: platelet factor 4 (PF4) and low affinity platelet factor 4 (LA-PF4). Neither of these proteins showed species-related antigenic differences. As determined by radioimmunoassay, the levels of PF4 and LA-PF4 antigen per 10(9) monkey platelets amounted to 10.7 and 20.3 microgram, respectively. One milliliter of monkey plasma prepared from blood collected into an anticoagulant composed of EDTA, prostaglandin E1, and theophylline solution contained 22.4 ng LA-PF4 and 8.0 ng PF4. Concentrations of these two platelet-specific proteins in monkeys closely resembled levels found in human platelets and plasma. Infusion of prostacyclin (PGI2) (100 or 300 ng/kg/min) into monkeys for 15 min resulted in a significant decrease of plasma levels of LA-PF4 antigen and of PF4 by 40%--60% (p < 0.0001). This decrease was related to the inhibitory effect of PGI2 on the secretion of platelets stimulated by a catheter or by venipuncture. Longer infusion of PGI2 did not produce further significant change. The supernate obtained after aggregation of human platelets stimulated by thrombin was injected into monkeys receiving PGI2 infusion. The disappearance of LA-PF4 antigen in monkey plasma followed a biphasic exponential curve with half-lives for the fast and slow components of 8.4 and 63 min. PF4 disappeared faster but followed the same pattern (half-lives for the fast and slow component of 2.1 and 70 min). Analysis of the experimental data suggests that the low levels of secreted platelet proteins in monkey plasma are related to their minimal in vivo release and to their rapid clearance.  相似文献

BackgroundIschemic Stroke (IS) and Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) frequently coexist and share atherosclerotic disease risk factors. According to the American Heart Association, IS subtypes may be considered CAD risk equivalents, but the evidence for non-atherosclerotic IS is uncertain. Additionally, the Coronary Calcium Score (CCS) is an accurate marker to address CAD risk; however, CCS distribution between IS subtypes is not well characterized.ObjectivesTo compare the CCS between atherosclerotic and non-atherosclerotic IS groups; and to determine which covariates were associated with high CCS in IS.MethodsThis cross-sectional design included all patients with IS, 45 to 70 years of age at the time of the stroke, consecutively admitted to a rehabilitation hospital between August 2014 and December 2016, without prevalent CAD. All patients underwent CT scanning for CCS measurement. CCS≥100 was considered a high risk for CAD, with a significance level of p<0.05.ResultsFrom the 244 studied patients (mean age 58.4±6.8 years; 49% female), 164 (67%) had non-atherosclerotic etiology. The proportions of CCS≥100 were similar between the atherosclerotic and the non-atherosclerotic groups (33% [n=26] x 29% [n=47]; p= 0.54). Among all IS patients, only age ≥60 years was independently associated with CCS≥100 (OR 3.5; 95%CI 1.7-7.1), accounting for hypertension, dyslipidemia, diabetes, sedentarism, and family history of CAD.ConclusionAtherosclerotic IS did not present a greater risk of CAD when compared to non-atherosclerotic IS according to CCS. Only age ≥60 years, but not etiology, was independently associated with CCS≥100.  相似文献

Background

Data are limited about race-and sex-associated differences in prognostically important ECG measures of regional repolarization.

Methods and results

The normal reference group from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study included 8,676 white and African-American men and women aged 40–65 years. Exclusion criteria included cardiovascular disease, hypertension, diabetes and major ECG abnormalities. Notable sex differences (p < 0.001) were observed in the upper 98% limits for rate-adjusted QTend (QTea) which was 435 ms in white and African-American men and 445 ms in white and African-American women, and for left ventricular epicardial repolarization time (RTepi) which was 345 ms in white and African-American men and 465 ms in white and African-American women. These sex differences reflect earlier onset and end of repolarization in men than in women. Upper normal limits for STJ amplitude in V2–V3 were 100 μV in white and African-American women, 150 μV in white men and 200 μV in African-American men (p < 0.001 for sex differences), and for other chest leads, aVL and aVF 50 μV in white women, 100 μV in African-American women, 100 μV in white men and 150 μV in African-American men (p < 0.001 for sex and race differences).

Conclusions

Shorter QTea and RTepi in men than in women reflect earlier onset and end of repolarization in men. STJ amplitudes in African-American men were higher than in other subgroups by race and sex. These sex and race differences need to be considered in clinical and epidemiological applications of normal standards.  相似文献
