Antibiotic prophylaxis and secondary haemorrhage following transurethral resection of the prostate: a prospective trial

One hundred and sixty-two patients were studied in a random double-blind controlled trial of co-trimoxazole to prevent secondary haemorrhage following transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP). There was a significant correlation between the incidence of post-operative urinary infection and secondary haemorrhage (P less than 0.05) but no difference between the incidence of bleeding in the treatment and placebo groups. Although infection may play a role in the development of secondary haemorrhage, co-trimoxazole for 10 days does not decrease the incidence of this complication.     

Estimation of average flow in ungated 3D phase contrast angiograms

Three dimensional (3D) phase contrast angiograms contain velocity data, which is discarded after the reconstruction of the projections. In extension to earlier work on velocity quantification with ungated 2D phase data, this paper shows that a useful estimate of the average velocity and flow rate can be extracted from ungated 3D phase contrast angiograms. Simulations and experiments in a phantom and in vivo were performed. For pulsatile flow and strong spin saturation, an over-estimation of the flow rate at the net in-flow end of the imaging volume and underestimation at the net out-flow end was observed. Imaging at lower RF tip angles yielded flow rates close to the correct value within the entire imaging volume. In contrast to ungated 2D experiments, the flow rates determined by repeated 3D experiments showed no variation.     

Minor Psychiatric Morbidity, Its Prevalence and Outcome in a Cohort of Civil Servants A Seven-year Follow-up Study

During the years 1979–1986, a cohort of direct entrantexecutive officers in the Civil Service were followed up toexamine the prevalence and outcome of minor psychiatric morbidityin an occupational setting. All studies using epidemiologicalstandardized research methods agree, that prevalence rates arehigh in occupational settings. As in primary care settings,half of the illness episodes followed a chronic course, whichemphasizes the need for early detection and prompt managementof these conditions, and for evaluative studies of interventionstrategies.     

Effect of Glycemic Carbohydrates on Short-term Satiety and Food Intake

We examine the relationships between glycemic carbohydrate and its effects on short-term satiety and food intake. Both high- and low-glycemic carbohydrates have an impact on satiety, but their effects have different time courses. High-glycemic carbohydrates are associated with a reduction in appetite and food intake in the short term (e.g., one hour), whereas the satiating effects of lower-glycemic carbohydrates appear to be delayed (e.g., 2 to 3 hours). There is no consistent evidence that an increase in blood glucose, either acute or sustained, is the primary determinant of their effects on food intake and satiety. Many other preabsorptive and postabsorptive signals for satiety exist and may be the determining factors. Further studies are needed to delineate the role of glycemic carbohydrates and their mechanisms of action in determining satiety.
