Comparison of patient satisfaction,quality of life,and bite force between elderly edentulous patients wearing mandibular two implant‐supported overdentures and conventional complete dentures after 4 years

This study compared two groups of patients who were elderly and edentulous, one group included subjects who had mandibular overdentures supported by two implants (Group I); the other groups wore conventional complete dentures (Group II). This retrospective study included 100 edentulous patients (50 from each group) with an average age of 67.86 years, who had been followed for 4 years. The groups were compared in terms of patient satisfaction, quality of life (QOL), and bite force. The bite force and patient satisfaction scores of Group I were found to be statistically significantly higher than Group II (p < .05). However, no statistically significant difference was found between the two groups’ QOL scores (p > .05) except on the physical pain subscale (p = .013). Based on these results, it can be concluded that after 4 years of function, subjects wearing mandibular overdentures supported by two implants had higher values for bite force and patient satisfaction scores, but similar QOL scores when compared to conventional complete denture‐wearers.     

Cor Triatriatum Dexter,Atrial Septal Defects,and Pulmonary Stenosis—A Rare Association

Cor triatriatum dexter (CTD) is an extremely rare congenital anomaly in which the right atrium is divided into 2 chambers by a membrane. The estimated incidence of cor triatriatum has been reported as 0.1% of congenital cardiac malformations. The septation of the right atrium in the setting of CTD is the result of failed resorption of the right valve of the sinus venosus. This results in anterolateral and posteromedial portions of the divided right atrium. CTD can be diagnosed at any age, especially if it is incidentally discovered.     

Lumbar spinal stenosis in a young individual as a result of ligamantum flavum ossification: A case report

INTRODUCTIONSymtomatic lumbar ligamantum flavum calcification is quite rare in the young age group.PRESENTATION OF CASEThe authors report a case of young adult with diagnosis of lumbar spinal stenosis, presenting with leg pain and neurological deficits. Computerized tomography (CT) scan and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging studies revealed ossification of the ligamantum flavum as the causative factor of the disease and the patient recovered completely after the decompressive operation.DISCUSSIONIt is emphasized that attention should be given to this rare etiological factor of lumbar spinal stenosis.CONCLUSIONComplete relief can be achieved with early and adequate surgery.     

PRIMARY SPINAL EPIDURAL EXTRAOSSEOUS EWING'S SARCOMA MIMICKING A SPINAL ABSCESS

Ewing's sarcoma is one of the most common malignant tumors of the skeletal system in children and young adults. It most frequently stems from the long bones of the extremities. However, though uncommon, extraosseous localization can be seen. Epidural extraosseous presentations are extremely rare. In this case, the authors report on the long-term follow-up of a patient with this well-demonstrated, but uncommon localization, and the initial unique presentation of the patient, which clinically and radiologically mimicked a cervical abscess.
