Stimulation of the nasal mucosa produces a number of respiratory reflexes the afferent limb of which is provided by the ethmoidal nerve, a branch of the trigeminal nerve. In the cat this nerve terminates within the trigeminal nucleus. It has no direct projection to brainstem respiratory centres. This study examines the response of respiratory-related neurones in the nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS) to ethmoidal stimulation. It demonstrates that these neurones show both excitatory and inhibitory responses to ethmoidal stimulation. Thus, the NTS appears to be involved in respiratory reflexes initiated by stimulation of the nasal mucosa. 相似文献

Reproduction stops among the majority of prairie voles (Microtus ochrogaster) during the winter. Short day lengths suppress male reproductive function dramatically in the laboratory, but photoperiod exerts only subtle effects on female reproductive function. Thus, the regulation of seasonal breeding in this species remains partially unspecified. In contrast to commonly studied rodents, female prairie voles do not undergo spontaneous estrous cycles; rather, they are induced into estrus by exposure to chemosignals expressed in conspecific male urine. In the present study, the hypothesis was tested that seasonal breeding among female prairie voles in the field reflects photoperiod-mediated changes in the responsiveness of the chemosensory system to male urine. Responsiveness was assessed by localizing the product of the c-fos immediate early gene with an immunocytochemical procedure. Female prairie voles were maintained in either long (LD 16:8) or short (LD 8:16) photoperiods from birth until adulthood, and exposed to either male urine or skim milk. Immunocytochemistry forfos protein revealed an increased number of immunoreactive cells within the accessory olfactory system of female prairie voles, including the accessory olfactory bulbs, granule cell layer, as well as the medial and cortical divisions of the amygdala 1 h after exposure to a single drop of urine as compared to individuals exposed to skim milk. The number of immunoreactivefos cells induced in females by conspecific male urine was also affected by photoperiod; short day females displayed fewer immunoreactivefos neurons in the accessory olfactory system as compared to long-day animal. Taken together, these results indicate that similar mechanisms underlie the responses of different rodent species to the chemosignals of conspecifics and that the pattern offos expression observed in the present study has functional significance for the regulation of reproduction in prairie voles. 相似文献

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory disease of unknown etiology involving the central nervous system. Since MS affects the whole body, orofacial aspects of the disease must be expected, particularly since loss of muscular coordination may result in a diminished ability to maintain oral hygiene. This preliminary study examined the dental health status of 22 volunteer MS patients. A questionnaire collected data regarding medical and dental histories and socieo-demographic information. Extra- and intra-oral examinations were carried out on all subjects to determine the particular dental treatment needs of this special group. The DMFT and CPITN scores for this group did not indicate that MS patients were more susceptible to dental caries or periodontal disease. However, the prevalence of trigeminal neuralgia and symptoms of TMJ dysfunction in the group studied indicated that these conditions may be manifest in MS patients and warrant further investigations. 相似文献

In developing mammalian brain, many neurons migrate to their final position by moving in direct apposition to radially oriented glial cells. Glial-guided migration can be visualized in microcultures of mouse cerebellar cells by the combined use of cellular antigen markers and high resolution time-lapse video microscopy (Hatten et al., 1984; Edmondson and Hatten, 1987). Such studies have demonstrated the behavior of migrating cells and revealed a motile leading process on the migrating neuron that resembles an axonal growth cone and grows along extended glial fibers. To study the fine structural details of the migrating neuron and its neuron-glial apposition, we identified and monitored neurons in microcultures with video microscopy and examined the cytology and cellular contacts of the same cells with transmission electron microscopy. The cytology of the soma and leading process of migrating cells closely matches that described for granule cells in intact brain (Rakic, 1971). Newly observed structures include the presence of longitudinally oriented microtubules extending from a basal body in the soma into the leading process, and microfilament-rich filopodia arising from the soma and leading process. The most striking feature of actively migrating neurons is a specialized junction between the neuronal cell soma and apposing glial fibers. At this junction, here termed "interstitial density," the extracellular space is dilated to 20 nm and filamentous material in the intracellular cleft either spans the cleft or runs parallel to the cell membranes. Some interstitial fibrils are contiguous with, or are transmembranous extensions of, submembranous cytoskeletal elements that attach to microtubules. Interstitial junctions were not found between neurons that did not translocate in the observation period before fixation. Myofibres in the normal left ventricle (LVs) of 24 healthy young accident victims and the diseased LVs of 10 subjects who died from constrictive pericarditis or congestive (African) cardiomyopathy were subjected to morphometric evaluation. Each myofibre was represented by a pair of measurements: cross-nuclear fibre (FD) and nuclear (ND) diameters. Using a VIDS image analyser interfaced with a light microscope, 150 paired measurements were determined for each of the 34 specimens. The bivariate relationship between FD and ND for each group of specimens were expressed as linear regressions. The limits for the group distribution of normal specimen FD/ND means were calculated and graphically depicted in the form of an ellipse. Disease specimens were plotted for comparison. Of the normal specimens, 23/24 FD/ND coordinates fell within the "normal' ellipse whereas the altered relationship between FD and ND in pathological myocardia caused all 10 specimen means to be plotted outside the ellipse and their regression lines to be displaced from normal. It is suggested that the normal data define the morphometric parameters of LV myofibres in healthy hearts and create a graphic standard by which myofibre pathology in hearts suspected of disease can be detected. 相似文献

TcR alpha, beta, and gamma chain negative cytotoxic NK-like cells were cloned from alloantigen-stimulated PBL obtained from nai;ve channel catfish. Stimulation with allogeneic cells and growth promoting factors are required for their continued in vitro proliferation and cytotoxic activity. These granular cells kill not only the stimulating allogeneic cells, but also unrelated allogeneic targets by a perforin/granzyme-mediated apoptosis pathway. In addition, they are negative for markers that define neutrophils, monocytes/macrophages, and non-specific cytotoxic cells. Although these NK-like clones kill a number of different allogeneic targets, they display interclonal variation in cytotoxicity toward a panel of allogeneic targets, i.e. some clones have no apparent target specificity, while others display a target preference. In addition, flow cytometric analyses revealed that expression of a putative FcmuR, an LFA-1-like molecule, and a putative thymocyte/T cell antigen varies among the different clones, with no clear correlation between surface antigen expression and cytotoxic activity. Although not all clones express a putative FcmuR, it was noted that they all expressed an ITAM containing FcepsilonR gamma chain homolog. This finding suggests that the catfish FcepsilonR gamma chain may potentially be used as an accessory molecule for not only FcmuRs, but also for other unknown activation receptors. These results support the hypothesis that catfish NK-like cells are heterogeneous in terms of target specificities and cell surface phenotype. 相似文献

Gaucher disease, a common lysosomal storage disorder, is associated with mutations at the acid beta-glucosidase (GCase) locus. Two affected individuals are described to share a common mutant allele, but manifest different clinical categorical phenotypes. A 57-year-old female, with Gaucher disease type 1 and Cherokee ancestry, was homozygous for a rare mutant allele encoding Lys79Asn (K79N). A 2-year-old Caucasian male, with Gaucher disease type 3 and Cherokee ancestry, was a heteroallelic homozygote for this same allele (K79N) and a novel complex mutation (null allele). The shared alleles were identical as determined by complete gene sequencing, suggesting a founder effect. The discrepant phenotypes (types 1 and 3) in these two patients provide support for a threshold of residual activity necessary to "protect" the central nervous system (CNS) from the pathogenic effects of Gaucher disease, indicating an allele dose-effect. Designation of genotype associations with specific phenotypes must be assessed with this perspective. 相似文献

With the rise in chronic, behavior-related disease, computerized behavioral protocols (CBPs) that help individuals improve behaviors have the potential to play an increasing role in the future health of society. To be effective and widely used CBPs should be based on accepted behavioral theory. However, designing CBPs while at the same time specifying their linkages to behavioral theory and developing reusable CBP components (interventions) are challenges to developers of CBPs. Having an ontology with which to describe CBPs could help with these issues. As a first step towards creating such an ontology, we modeled PACE-Adolescent, a theory-based behavioral protocol that uses the Stages of Change Model and Social Cognitive Theory, using PROTEGE-2000, an ontology editor and knowledge acquisition system. We created a three-part knowledge model. Two sub-ontologies described behavioral interventions and psychological theories. The third component, implemented using Guideline Interchange Format (GLIF3), provided a way to describe the structure of a protocol and to link intervention resources and groups of actions to elements of psychological theory. Using this framework, we formally described the PACE-Adolescent protocol. Creating knowledge models such as this may lead to improvements in the design and evaluation of computerized health behavior protocols. 相似文献

BACKGROUND: Asthma mortality and the mortality of athletes during sports have been described separately in detail in the medical literature. However, asthma has not been reported as a cause of death in competitive athletes. OBJECTIVE: The object of this study was to raise the awareness of physicians, coaches, trainers, and parents that children and adults can have fatal asthma exacerbations during and immediately after participating in sports. METHODS: The Temple Sports Asthma Research Center identified athletes from 1993 until 2000 who died during or after sporting activity by using the nationwide Burrell's Information Service. Once a possible asthma-related sports death was identified, the autopsy report was requested from the coroner or medical examiner, and an attempt was made to contact the family. Contact with the family was limited to information about the death, medical history, sports involvement, and any medication usage by the person who had died. Secondary sources, including news reports, were used to confirm whether the subject died of asthma during or immediately after a sporting activity. RESULTS: Two hundred sixty-three possible cases were identified. Sixty-one deaths met the criteria for study inclusion. White deaths outnumbered black deaths by 2 to 1. Deaths among male subjects predominated. Most subjects were younger than the age of 20 years, with the most prevalent age group being between 10 to 14 years old. Fifty-one percent (18 of 35) of the competitive athletes had their fatal event while participating in organized sport, 14 in a practice situation and 4 deaths during a game or meet setting. Basketball and track were the 2 most frequent activities performed at the time of the fatal event. CONCLUSION: The subjects who had fatal asthma exacerbations were usually white male subjects between the ages of 10 and 20 years. Mild intermittent or persistent asthma by history was commonly identified. Sudden fatal asthma exacerbations occur in both competitive and recreational athletes and can be precipitated by sporting activity. 相似文献
