This review presents the first detailed presentation of the parallelism between the Tuskegee Syphilis Study and the Captain America graphic novel ‘TRUTH: Red, White and Black’, published as a graphic novel by Marvel Comics in 2004 as a paperback, and then in 2009 as a hardcover. First written, published and distributed monthly in 2003 as pre-sequel seven comic book series to tell the story of the origins of the WWII superhero Captain America. In 2003, Marvel Comics chose to tell a ‘very dark story’ to explain the origins of Captain America, a half century after the initial introduction of Captain America as a WWII action hero in 1940. By detailing—for the first time—nine parallel aspects between these two storylines, this review demonstrates how Marvel Comics brought the tragic Tuskegee Syphilis Study story into the popular press, thus reaching an audience far beyond traditional bioethics academicians. This review is intended to stimulate and guide classroom discussions on the ethical issues at the core of the infamous Tuskegee Syphilis Study allowing bioethical issues to be made more accessible to the general public, via school curriculums, by the use of graphic novels. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the role of the nitric oxide (NO) system in ovarian function, by determining if arginine (Arg) supplementation impacts follicle number, cell proliferation, and expression of the NO system members in nutritionally compromised ewes. Ewes were randomly assigned into maintenance (C, 100% requirements), excess (O; 2xC), or restricted (U; 0.6xC) diets 8 weeks prior to Arg treatment. Ewes were individually fed twice daily with pelleted diets. Ewes from each nutritional group were randomly assigned to one of two treatments: saline or Arg, which was initiated on day 0 of the estrous cycle and administered 3 times per day. Ovaries were collected at the early-luteal, mid-luteal and late-luteal/follicular phases of the estrous cycle to determine 1) the number of surface follicles, 2) follicle cell proliferation marked by Ki67 protein expression, and 3) expression of endothelial nitric oxide (eNOS; NOS3) and soluble guanylyl cyclase beta (sGC; GUCY1B3) protein and mRNA in granulosa (G) and theca (T) layers using immunohistochemistry followed by image analysis and qPCR, respectively. During nutritional treatment, C maintained body weight, O gained 6±1.2 kg, and U lost 14±1.3 kg. Our data show that: 1) Ki67 was expressed in all ovarian compartments, eNOS protein was detected in blood vessels of T and stroma, and sGC protein was detected in T cells, and blood vessels of T layer and other ovarian compartments; 2) plane of nutrition affected the number of surface follicles, and thus folliculogenesis, cell proliferation in the T layer, eNOS and sGC protein expression in T, and NOS3 and GUCY1B3 mRNA expression in G; 3) Arg treatment affected cell proliferation in G and T, eNOS and sGC protein expression in T, mRNA expression of NOS3 in T in all groups, and GUCY1B3 in G depending on the stage of the estrous cycle; and 4) G and T cell proliferation, and expression of eNOS and sGC protein in T was affected by the stage of the estrous cycle. ObjectiveThe study objective was to identify biobehavioral variables associated with greater intake of nicotine and a tobacco carcinogen among Black light smokers who smoke 1 to 10 cigarettes per day (CPD).MethodsWe analyzed baseline data collected from 426 Black light smokers enrolled in Kick It at Swope III (KIS III), a smoking cessation trial for Black smokers. We examined differences in concentrations of tobacco biomarkers, including urinary total nicotine equivalents (TNE) and total 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3)pyridyl-1-butanonol (NNAL; a human carcinogen), across gender, age, plasma nicotine metabolite ratio (NMR), CPD, and measures of tobacco dependence, including time to first cigarette (TFC), using ANOVA.ResultsTobacco biomarker levels were significantly higher among those who smoked more CPD (6–10 vs 1–5 CPD) and those with greater reported physical dependence on tobacco. Concurrently, those who smoked 1–5 CPD smoked each cigarette more intensely than those who smoked 6–10 CPD. While we found no gender differences overall, among those who smoked 1–5 CPD, women had higher NNAL levels compared to men. The rate of nicotine metabolism, measured by the nicotine metabolite ratio, was not significantly related to TNE or NNAL levels.ConclusionAmong Black Light smokers, higher cigarette consumption and greater physical dependence—but not rate of nicotine metabolism, menthol use, or socioeconomic status—were associated with greater toxicant exposure and thus a likely increased risk of tobacco-related diseases. The lack of data on light smokers, and specifically on Blacks, make this observation important given the disproportionate burden of lung cancer in this population. 相似文献

The measures for leishmaniasis control include the precise diagnosis of disease. However, although several recombinant antigens have been tested with this biotechnological purpose, no effective product exists, which could detects patients with the active disease, as well as differentiates them from cured and treated patients. In this study, a conserved Leishmania hypothetical protein, which was identified in Leishmania infantum parasites, but evaluated to presents high homology in the amino acid sequences between distinct parasite species, was evaluated for the diagnosis of tegumentary and visceral leishmaniasis. In addition, PBMCs collected from treated and untreated mucosal leishmaniasis (ML) and visceral leishmaniasis (VL) patients, as well as in healthy subjects living in endemic region of disease, were in vitro stimulated, when IFN-γ, IL-4 and IL-10 levels were evaluated in the cell supernatant. Regarding the serological analyses, ELISA experiments using the recombinant protein (rLiHyL) and a human serological panel revealed high sensitivity and specificity values to detect both diseases, while control antigens showed worst results. Regarding the cellular response, results showed that rLiHyL-stimulated cells produced higher IFN-γ and lower IL-4 and IL-10 levels in the supernatants. Also, the anti-protein antibody production was evaluated in these patients, and data showed higher IgG2 and lower IgG1 levels found in the treated patients and healthy controls, demonstrating the stimulation of a Th1-type response induced by the rLiHyL protein. In conclusion, this hypothetical protein can be considered as antigenic in TL and VL, as well as a vaccine candidate to be tested in future studies to protect against disease. 相似文献
