This paper reports a systematic review of prompt-fading research, with a focus on experiments comparing two or more prompt-fading procedures. Forty-five articles with 46 experiments met the operationally-defined inclusion criteria. For the selected articles, data on several variables were extracted and analyzed. Research demonstrated that all prompt-fading procedures were generally effective in promoting acquisition of behavior. Stimulus prompting was more effective and efficient when compared to response-prompting procedures. Comparisons of response-prompting procedures yielded variable efficiency results. These outcomes are discussed in terms of the behavioral principles that facilitate transfer of stimulus control from the prompt to the discriminative stimulus, such as blocking and overshadowing. Basic investigations of the role of these behavioral principles might help develop prompt-fading procedures that are consistently effective across participants. Implications for research include suggestions for the development of individualized assessments of stimulus control, similar to the functional analysis methodology.  相似文献

Animal models of chronic prolactin (PRL) excess have included rats bearing transplantable pituitary tumors that have produced other hypophyseal hormones in addition to PRL. We report characterization of a new model, the Buffalo rat implanted with the MMQ tumor, a line developed from the 7315a line. Rats implanted with the MMQ tumor have serum PRL levels that increase with time and correlate with the estimated volume of the subcutaneous tumor. When rats are killed 4 weeks after implantation, serum PRL levels are strikingly higher in tumor-bearing rats compared with controls (females, 2,723 +/- 266 v 192 +/- 46 ng/mL, P less than .0001; males, 1,637 +/- 213 v 99 +/- 11 ng/mL, P less than .0001). Serum PRL levels measured by the Nb2 lymphoma assay were higher than immunoassay measurements in both tumor-bearing and control Buffalo rats. Sephadex chromatography of serum from tumor-bearing rats showed that most of the PRL immunoreactivity co-eluted with 125I-rPRL. Neither serum growth hormone (GH) nor luteinizing hormone (LH) levels were different from controls in tumor-bearing rats. Female MMQ-bearing rats had lower estradiol levels. At death, the wet weights of adrenal glands, kidneys, and gonads were not affected by the presence of tumor. In contrast, tumor-bearing rats had increased spleen weight and histological evidence of white pulp hyperplasia. The Buffalo rat implanted with the PRL-only MMQ tumor is a promising new tool for the study of chronic hyperprolactinemia.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Impaired liver regeneration is a feature of alcoholic hepatitis, but the relative importance of alcohol, nutritional imbalance and inflammatory mediators in causing this effect is unclear. Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is a form of liver disease with similar morphology to alcoholic hepatitis, but the effect of this disorder on liver regeneration is unclear. We, therefore, examined the status of liver regeneration in a rat nutritional model of hepatic steatosis with inflammation, which is morphologically identical to NASH in humans. Methods: Male Wistar rats received a methionine-choline-deficient diet (MCDD) for 4 weeks before experiments and both isocaloric pair-fed and ad libitum-fed rats were used as controls. Following partial hepatectomy (68%), the extent of hepatic regeneration was determined 24 h later using [3H]-thymidine incorporation and restitution of liver mass. Results: There was no significant difference of [3H]-thymidine incorporation in MCDD-fed, pair-fed and ad libitum-fed rats (80+/-27, 78+/-11 and 80+/-6.3 d.p.m./microg DNA, respectively). Similarly, restituted liver masses in three groups of rats were not significantly different (17+/-3.8, 18+/-1.8 and 17+/-3.1% initial liver weight, respectively). Conclusions: The similarities in hepatic histology and cytochrome P450 2E1 induction between this nutritional model of hepatic steatohepatitis and alcoholic steatohepatitis imply that these two disorders share pathogenetic mechanisms. However, liver regeneration is not altered by NASH in rats, indicating that the nutritional and inflammatory changes that appear similar to those of alcoholic liver disease do not cause impairment of liver regeneration.  相似文献

Objective

Newborn screening (NBS) identifies genetic carriers for sickle cell hemoglobinopathy and cystic fibrosis. We aimed to identify factors during initial NBS carrier results disclosure by primary care providers (PCPs) that influenced parents’ experiences and reactions.

Methods

Open-ended responses from telephone interviews with 270 parents of carriers were analyzed using mixed-methods. Conventional content analysis identified influential factors; chi-square tests analyzed relationships between factors and parent-reported reactions.

Results

Parents reported positive (35%) or negative (31%) reactions to results disclosure. Parents’ experiences were influenced by specific factors: content messages (72%), PCP traits (47%), and aspects of the setting (30%). Including at least one of five specific content messages was associated (p < 0.05) with positive parental reactions; omitting at least one of four specific content messages was associated (p < 0.05) with negative parental reactions. Parents reported positive reactions when PCPs avoided jargon or were perceived as calm. Parents reported negative reactions to jargon usage and results disclosure by voicemail.

Conclusion

Parents identified aspects of PCP communication which influenced their reactions and results disclosure experiences.

Practice implications

Our findings suggest ways PCPs may improve communication of carrier results. PCPs should provide specific content messages and consider how their actions, characteristics, and setting can influence parental reactions.  相似文献

Hemostatic plug (HP) formation was investigated in the ear bleeding time incision in normal and von Willebrand pigs. HP volume was calculated by integrating the areas of serial sections. In normal pigs (n = 11), platelets immediately formed a layer on the surface of the cut channel. Platelet aggregates formed at the ends of transected vessels and gradually enlarged. Finally, all transected vessels were occluded by HP and bleeding stopped. In contrast, large HPs were formed in the incision in von Willebrand's disease (vWD) pigs (n = 4); these HPs did not cover the ends of the transected vessels, which continued to bleed, allowing the formation of large hemostatically ineffective platelet aggregates in the incision. Canals traversed these HPs, and bleeding from the open vessels may have continued through them. After infusion of cryoprecipitate into a vWD pig, the bleeding time shortened, and the morphological findings of the HPs were similar to those of normal pigs. In normal pigs (n = 3) infused with an anti- Willebrand factor monoclonal antibody, which prolonged the bleeding time, a large HP formed in the incision, similar to that observed in the vWD pig. The volume of the normal and vWD HPs increased with time. These in vivo findings suggest that Willebrand factor is involved in the localization of the HP to the damaged vessel and may also play a role in platelet-platelet interaction. A computerized morphometric technique was used for measuring the volume of the hemostatic plugs and the distance of sequential points on the perimeter of the HP from the center of selected bleeding vessels.  相似文献

This study was conducted to determine the serotype distribution and trends over time of Streptococcus pneumoniae strains associated with noninvasive infections among adult patients ≥18 years of age in the United States (2009 to 2012). A total of 2,927 S. pneumoniae isolates recovered from patients presenting with respiratory infections and obtained mainly (87.0%) from lower respiratory tract specimens (sputum) were included. The levels of the 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV7) serotypes remained stable over the 4-year study period (4.6% to 5.5%; P = 0.953). Overall, 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) serotypes were identified in 32.7% of samples, declining from 33.7% to 35.5% in 2009 to 2011 to 28.2% in 2012 (P = 0.007), with a significant decrease in the levels of serotypes 7F (P = 0.013) and 6A (P = 0.010). The levels of 19A remained constant (15.8% to 17.1%) during 2009 to 2011, dropping to 12.2% in 2012 (P = 0.089). The prevalence of serotypes associated with the 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23), but not PCV13, remained generally stable; however, the prevalence of serotypes 15B and 15C (15B/15C) increased from 2.7% to 6.3% (P = 0.010). The proportion of nonvaccine serotypes increased gradually during the study period (P = 0.044), particularly for serotype 35B (from 3.6% in 2009 to 8.2% in 2012; P = 0.001). Nonsusceptibility rates for penicillin (susceptible breakpoint, ≤2 μg/ml) and clindamycin against PCV7 serotypes decreased over the period. These results suggest the emergence of indirect effects following introduction of PCV13 for infants and young children; continued surveillance is needed to assess the burden of PCV13 serotypes in the adult population after the implementation of age-based recommendations in the United States.  相似文献
