Objectives

Being overweight or obese is central to metabolic syndrome, and these characteristics constitute dominant risk factors for chronic diseases. Although behavioral factors, including eating habits and sedentary lifestyles, are considered to be determinants of obesity, the specific childhood factors that contribute to this condition have not been clearly defined.

Methods

The subjects consisted of 261 children aged 7-9 years who were recruited from an elementary school during October 2003. Information was obtained from their parents using a questionnaire focused on eating behaviors and lifestyle factors, additional data were also collected via anthropometric measurements and biochemical examinations, including blood tests.

Results

A total of 48 (18.4%) of the 261 children were overweight, and 34 (70.8%) had at least one other component of metabolic syndrome. Eating behaviors emerged as significant lifestyle-related risk factors for being overweight or obese. Those who engaged in overeating more than twice per week had three times the risk of being overweight (odds ratio [OR], 3.10, 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.39 to 6.92), and those who ate rapidly had three times the risk of being overweight (OR, 3.28; 95% CI, 1.68 to 6.41). Those who had fewer family meals (fewer than 2-3/month) had a nine times higher risk of being overweight than those who had family meals more frequently (at least 1/day) (OR, 9.51; 95% CI, 1.21 to 74.82).

Conclusions

This study showed that being overweight or obese during preadolescence is associated with a higher risk of metabolic syndrome and is related to unhealthy eating behaviors. Thus, weight-control strategies and healthy eating behaviors should be developed early in life to reduce the risk for metabolic syndrome.  相似文献

This study sought to investigate the effects of acetic NaF solutions on titanium and Ti alloy brackets. To this end, two different brackets were immersed in various NaF-containing solutions for three days. The Equilibrium Ti (EQ) bracket was composed of Ti only, whereas the Ortho 2 (OR) bracket was composed of Ti (base) and Ti-6A1-4V (wings). Brackets that were immersed in the acetic NaF solution of pH 3.5 yielded no reliable surface microhardness values due to corrosion. In other test solutions, however, there was minimal reduction (at best 3%) in microhardness. Further on microhardness, the values of the OR bracket at the base and wings were different. On the release of elements, it was significant only in the acetic NaF solution of pH 3.5. However, the release of Al (6.11+/-0.93 ppm) and V (1.16+/-0.40 ppm) in this solution was low. In conclusion, an acetic NaF solution of low pH could damage Ti-based orthodontic brackets.  相似文献

PURPOSE: To evaluate 20 Gy and 40 Gy of intraluminal beta-irradiation using a 188Re-7mercaptoacetyltriglycine (MAG3)-filled balloon catheter to reduce tissue hyperplasia caused by covered stent placement for 12 weeks of follow-up in a canine urethral model. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Ten dogs underwent 188Re-MAG3-filled balloon dilatation immediately after stent placement; 20 Gy at 1-mm tissue depth in group I (n = 5) and 40 Gy in group II (n = 5), whereas 5 dogs (group III) underwent conventional balloon dilatation only. RESULTS: There were no significant differences among the three groups for percentage diameter of stenosis, although this was highest in group III. There was a tendency toward lower mean thickness of the epithelial layer and the papillary projection for out-stent area, and thickness of the papillary projection and degree of inflammatory cells for instent area in groups I and II compared with group III. Thickness of the papillary projection in out-stent area was significantly different among the three groups (P = 0.031). It was significantly less thick in group I than in group III (P < 0.05), whereas group II was not significantly different from group III. CONCLUSION: 188Re-MAG3-filled balloon dilatation has the potential to reduce tissue hyperplasia after 12 weeks of follow-up in a canine urethral model. The use of 20 Gy compared to 40 Gy did not show significant differences.  相似文献

The members of the IL-1 family play important roles in the development and pathogenesis of autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. Especially, IL-1 and IL-18 belong to the IL-1 family because they share structural similarity and require caspase-1 for processing. Currently, IL-18 has been studied for its biological effects in the broad spectrum of Th1- or Th2- related autoimmune diseases. IL-18 also uses a similar signaling pathway as that of IL-1 family members. Taken together these results, IL-18-inducible genes might also contribute to autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. It has recently been reported that an inducer of TNF-alpha was identified as one of IL-18 inducible genes in IL-18 responsible cells and named as a new cytokine IL-32. We have produced novel monoclonal anti IL-32 antibodies in order to help study IL-32 function and to develop improved diagnosis of IL-32-expressing tumors. Several mAbs reactive to IL-32 isoforms were prepared and characterized by the epitope analysis and Western blotting performed using various deletion mutants and IL-32 isoforms (IL-32alpha, beta, gamma, and delta). In order to optimize the sandwich ELISA for IL-32, recombinant IL-32alpha was added, followed by the addition of a biotinylated mAb KU32-52 into the microtiter plate wells pre-coated with a mAb KU32-07 or mAb KU32-56. The bound mAb was probed with a streptavidin conjugated to HRP. The epitope analysis and Western blot analysis revealed that mAb KU32-07 could detect only IL-32alpha and KU32-52 was bound to all isoforms, whereas KU32-56 were reactive to IL-32 alpha, beta, delta isoforms but not gamma isoform. These sandwich ELISAs were highly specific and had a minimal detection limit of 80 pg/ml (mean+3 SD of zero calibrator) and measuring range of up to 3000 pg/ml. An ELISA using a coating mAb KU32-07 and a capturing biotinylated mAb KU32-52 had no cross-reaction with other cytokines such as IL-32beta, IL-32gamma, IL-32delta, hIL-1alpha , IL-1beta , hIL-2, hIL-6, hIL-8, hIL-10, hIL-18, and hTNF-alpha. Intra-assay coefficients of variation were 11 to 6% (n=16) and inter-assay coefficients were 10 to 5% (n=9). Another ELISA using a coating mAb KU32-56 and a capturing biotinylated mAb KU32-52 detected both IL-32alpha and IL-32beta isoforms but not gamma and delta isoforms and had no cross-reaction with other cytokines such as hIL-1alpha , IL-1beta , hIL-2, hIL-6, hIL-8, hIL-10, hIL-18, and hTNF-alpha. One mAb KU32-09 was shown to react strongly on immunohistochemistry. Our newly established mAbs, KU32-07, KU32-09, KU32-52, KU32-56, have different and useful properties for the detection of IL-32 by immunohistochemistry, ELISA, and Western blotting.  相似文献

AIM: To determine the effect of metabolic syndrome on age-related cataract formation.METHODS: We analyzed data for 2852 subjects [41.8% men and 58.2% women; mean (±SD) age, 52.9±13.9y], taken from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2008. Metabolic syndrome was diagnosed by criteria proposed by the Joint Interim Societies. Cataract was diagnosed by using the Lens Opacities Classification System III. The association between metabolic syndrome and cataract was determined using age-adjusted and multivariable logistic regression analyses. RESULTS:In multivariable analyses, men with metabolic syndrome had a 64% increased risk of nuclear cataract [odds ratio (OR), 1.64; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.12-2.39]. Women with metabolic syndrome had a 56% increased risk of cortical cataract (OR, 1.56; 95% CI, 1.06-2.30). Men and women with metabolic syndrome had a 46% (OR, 1.46; 95% CI, 1.01-2.12) and 49% (OR, 1.49; 95% CI, 1.07-2.08) increased risk of any cataract, respectively. The prevalence of nuclear and any cataract significantly increased with an increasing number of disturbed metabolic components in men, and prevalence of all types of cataracts increased in women. Men using hypoglycemic medication had an increased risk of nuclear (OR, 2.62; 95% CI, 1.41-4.86) and any (OR, 2.27; 95% CI, 1.14-4.51) cataract, and women using antidyslipidemia medication had an increased risk of cortical (OR, 2.18; 95% CI, 1.12-4.24) and any (OR, 2.21; 95% CI, 1.14-4.26) cataract.CONCLUSION: Metabolic syndrome and its components, such as abdominal obesity, high blood pressure, and impaired fasting glucose, are associated with age-related cataract formation in the Korean population.  相似文献

Suppressive effects of propolis in rat adjuvant arthritis   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
The effects of ethanolic extract (EEP) of propolis on chronic inflammation were evaluated using rat adjuvant arthritis. In the chronic inflammatory animal model, the arthritis index was suppressed by EEP treatments (50 mg/kg/day and 100 mg/kg/day, p.o.). Moreover, physical weakness, induced by the chronic disease state, was dose-dependently improved in the EEP-treated groups. Its analgesic effect, assessed using the tail-flick test, was comparable to prednisolone (2.5 mg/kg/day, p.o.) and acetyl salicylic acid (100 mg/kg/day, p.o.). In carrageenan rat hind paw edema, which was conducted to test the effects of subfractions of EEP, the petroleum ether sub-fraction (100 mg/kg, p.o.) showed an inhibitory effect on the paw edema whereas EEP (200 mg/kg, p.o.) showed a significant anti-inflammatory effect at 3 and 4 hrs after carrageenan injection. From these results, we conclude that the ethanolic extract of propolis had a profound anti-inflammatory effects on both chronic and acute inflammations.  相似文献

In this study we hypothesized that the residents in the disaster-exposed group would experience higher levels of stress, anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder compared to those in the non-disaster group. Furthermore, this would result in an increased need for health-related welfare in the disaster-exposed group. Our data supports both hypotheses, and these research findings are consistent with a growing body of research that supports such a conclusion.  相似文献

Sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) acts on a set of G protein-coupled receptors in the plasma membrane and also as a second messenger in certain cell types. There are two possible pathways to mobilize intracellular Ca(2+) concentration by S1P. One is through phospholipase C, and the other is through intracellular Ca(2+) channels operated by S1P. The Mn(2+) quenching method was applied to elucidate the action mode of S1P-induced Ca(2+) mobilization in rat hepatocytes. In permeabilized hepatocytes, inositol trisphosphate induced Mn(2+) quenching, and it was blocked by heparin. However, S1P did not induce Mn(2+) quenching. Results suggest that S1P did not mobilize Ca(2+) through intracellular Ca(2+) channels.  相似文献

Objectives: Exposure to air pollution has been reported to be associated with increase in pulmonary disease. The aims of the present study were to examine the use of personal nitrogen dioxide (NO2) samplers as a means of measuring exposure to air pollution and to investigate the relationship between personal exposure to air pollution and pulmonary function. Methods: We measured individual exposures to NO2 using passive personal NO2 samplers for 298 healthy university students. Questionnaire interview was conducted for traffic-related factors, and spirometry was performed when the samplers were returned after 1 day. Results: Personal NO2 concentrations varied, depending on the distance between residence and a main road (P=0.029). Students who used transportation for more than 1 h were exposed to higher levels of NO2 than those using transportation for less than 1 h (P=0.032). In terms of transportation, riding in a bus or subway caused significantly higher exposure than not using them (P=0.046). NO2 exposure was not significantly associated with forced vital capacity (FVC) or forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) but was associated with the ratio of FEV1/FVC and mid-expiratory flow between 25% and 75% of the forced vital capacity (FEF25–75) (P<0.05). Conclusions: This study indicates that concentrations of personal exposure to NO2 are significantly influenced by traffic-related air pollution and are associated with decreased pulmonary function.  相似文献
