A case of Vibrio cholerae non-O1 septicemia with liver cirrhosis]

A case of Vibrio cholerae non-O1 septicemia is described in this paper. A 45-year-old male with a three year history of liver cirrhosis, was admitted to our division with hematemesis, abdominal pain, high fever and a loss of consciousness. Three days before onset of symptoms, he traveled to Ishigaki Island and ate a raw lobster. Two days after, his temperature rose to 39.7 degrees C and the blood pressure dropped to 36/- mmHg. By endoscopic examination, an ulcer was found in the stomach, and the bleeding was stopped by electrical coagulation. Blood culture showed growth of V. cholerae non-O1. The organism was found to be sensitive to OFLX, CZX, MINO, LMOX and CP. Although DIC, infections of fungus and MRSA occurred as complications, he recovered by adequate procedures. Subsequently, he left this division after eight weeks. There are various reports related to V. cholerae non-O1 septicemia in foreign countries, but few cases have been reported in Japan. And these cases had severe underlying diseases such as leukemia and liver cirrhosis.     

Anatomy and pathophysiology of the popliteal tendon area in the lateral meniscus: 1. Arthroscopic and anatomical investigation

An arthroscopic and anatomical investigation was performed to define the abnormal conditions of the popliteal tendon area in a lateral meniscus. Arthroscopic findings for 100 patients and anatomical observations of 10 amputated knees were analyzed. Five of the 10 dissected menisci were also examined histologically. Menisco-tibial coronary ligaments were classified into two types, as follows: type I--a coronary ligament covering an entire popliteal tendon beneath the meniscus; type II--a popliteal tendon visible beneath the meniscus through defects of the coronary ligament. Twenty-one of 100 cases were classified as type I, and 79 were classified as type II. Three of the 10 anatomical dissections were type I, and the remaining 7 were type II. Menisci in which the type I coronary ligaments were thought to be torn and menisci with type II coronary ligaments showed a rather marked mobility, but no conclusion could be reached.     

Results of low- and high-dose-rate interstitial brachytherapy for T3 mobile tongue cancer.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the treatment results of low-dose-rate (LDR) and high-dose-rate (HDR) interstitial brachytherapy (ISBT) for T3 mobile tongue cancer. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Between 1974 and 1992, 61 patients with T3 mobile tongue cancer were treated with LDR ISBT using (192)Ir hairpins with or without single pins. In addition, between 1991 and 1999, 14 patients were treated with HDR ISBT. For nine patients treated with ISBT alone, the total dose was 59-94 Gy (median 72 Gy) within one week in LDR ISBT and 60 Gy/10 fractions/5 days in HDR ISBT. For 66 patients treated with a combination therapy of external beam radiotherapy (EBRT) and ISBT, the total dose was 12.5-60 Gy (median 30 Gy) of EBRT and 50-112 Gy (median 68 Gy) within 1 week in LDR ISBT or 32-60 Gy (median 48 Gy)/8-10 fractions/5-7 days in HDR ISBT. RESULTS: The 2- and 3-year local control rates of all patients were both 68%. The 2- and 3-year local control rates of patients treated with LDR ISBT were both 67%, and those with HDR ISBT were both 71%. The local control rate of patients treated with HDR ISBT was similar to those with LDR ISBT. CONCLUSIONS: ISBT for T3 mobile tongue cancer is effective and acceptable. The treatment result of HDR ISBT is almost similar to that of LDR ISBT for T3 mobile tongue cancer.     

Neuronal responses in monkey anterior putamen during operant bar-press behavior

Single neuron activity was recorded in the monkey anterior putamen to compare visuomotor-related responses during operant bar-press behavior with visual discrimination of objects. Of 615 neurons recorded 9.8% ( ) responded to the presentation of food during forced delay of access to the bar. Of these 60 neurons, 38 were also tested with nonfood, and 19 of these responded to the nonfood objects regardless of the following movement. The amplitude of the visual-related responses of some differential neurons was graded for different objects to reflect the relative degree of preference for the food presented. However, these responses disappeared in reaction time tasks in which the bar could be accessed for pressing immediately upon presentation of an object. The visual response latency of differential neurons ranged from 50 to 700 ms (mean ± SD, 386 ±211 ms), which was longer than that of the nondifferential responses (207 ± 204 ms). These results suggest that anterior putamen neurons might participate in estimation of visual information that could be related to forecasting movement.
