Comparison of two different metronidazole regimens in the treatment of Gardnerella vaginalis infection with or without trichomoniasis

Gardnerella vaginalis infection confirmed by culture was treated either by a 2 g dose or divided doses of metronidazole in 100 and 200 female patients respectively. Both dosages were equally effective. We recommend a single dose of 2 g metronidazole in the treatment of Gard. vaginalis infection, particularly when association with trichomoniasis is confirmed or suspected.     

Abnormal illness behaviour in young women in a primary care setting: is Briquet's syndrome a useful category?

In a study of abnormal behaviour in women aged 16-25 in one large group practice a screening instrument and an interview were used to identify Briquet's Syndrome. The prevalence, 2.04 per 1000, was lower than that found in previous studies. The fact that many other patients showed both the high consultation rates and the other correlates of Briquet's Syndrome brings the usefulness of a discrete syndrome into doubt.     

Femoral artery compression device for outpatient angiography

To avoid late bleeding from the femoral artery puncture site after outpatient femoral angiography, a compression device was designed to exert continuous pressure over the groin, even when the patient is upright. It has been successfully used in more than 2,000 arterial catheter procedures. The device can also help prevent bleeding in patients who are at increased risk because of hypertension or anticoagulant therapy.     

Regulation of beta-adrenoceptors by catecholamines in the rabbit skeletal muscle

(-)-[125I]Cyanopindolol (ICYP) was used to characterise beta-adrenoceptors in the gastrocnemius muscle of the rabbit. The binding of ICYP was saturable. The KI value for the selective beta 2-adrenoceptor antagonist, ICI 118551, was 0.16 +/- 0.01 nM (mean +/- S.E.M) and for the selective beta 1-adrenoceptor antagonist, metoprolol, was 300.1 +/- 33.3 nM. Hofstee plots for both antagonists were linear indicating the presence of homogeneous beta 2-adrenoceptors in the skeletal muscle of the rabbit. In gastrocnemius muscles obtained from rabbits chronically pretreated in vivo with vehicle (0.1% ascorbic acid), adrenaline (40-50 nmol.kg-1.h-1) or noradrenaline (80-100 nmol.kg-1.h-1) via osmotic mini-pumps implanted for 10 days, the Bmax values were 44 +/- 3, 25 +/- 4 (P less than 0.05) and 41 +/- 7 (fmol.mg-1 protein) and KD values were 7.3 +/- 0.9, 6.3 +/- 0.8 and 9.3 +/- 2.5 (pM), respectively. Thus pretreatment with the circulating hormone adrenaline but not noradrenaline down-regulated the number of skeletal muscle beta 2-adrenoceptors but did not influence the affinity.
