During the past decade, studies have shown an inverse association between birth weight and blood pressure and risk of coronary heart disease in adult life. From old public archives we were able to trace the birth records of 545 out of 905 persons (60.2%) aged 31-51 years who participated in the Ebeltoft Health Promotion Project in Denmark. We examined the associations between birth weight, length at birth, Ponderal Index and systolic and diastolic blood pressure. No associations were found for women. For men, the mean systolic blood pressure fell from 131.1 mmHg with a birth weight of less than 3300 g to 129.6 mmHg with a birth weight of more than 4000 g, and for diastolic blood pressure 81.6 mmHg to 80.3 mmHg, respectively. For men, the mean systolic blood pressure fell from 135.7 mm Hg with a birth length of 30-51 cm to 131.6 with a birth length of 55-62 cm, and for diastolic blood pressure 83.0 mmHg to 78.8 mmHg, respectively. The associations may reflect organ programming in fetal life.  相似文献

Abstract

Coffee workers respiratory health problems, found to be associated with dust exposure in the coffee factories, but the content of the dust is not well known. A cross-sectional survey was conducted to assess the microbial contamination of coffee in dry and wet coffee process, from four farms in two regions of Ethiopia. A total of 36 samples of coffee were collected for laboratory investigation. The microbial load in the dry process ranged from 6.9?×?102 to 7.2?×?105 colony forming units (CFU)/mL while the microbial load in wet process ranged from 2.5?×?102 to 4.6?×?105 CFU/mL. The results indicate the presence of gram negative bacteria in dried and stored beans from both the wet and dry process. During further coffee processing possible release of endotoxin from coffee contaminated by gram negative bacteria might affect coffee workers respiratory health. Further studies are required to assess the relation between bacterial contamination of coffee and endotoxin level in coffee factories.  相似文献

Repeated periodization of carbohydrate (CHO) intake using a diet‐exercise strategy called the sleep‐low model can potentially induce mitochondrial biogenesis and improve endurance performance in endurance‐trained individuals. However, more studies are needed to confirm the performance‐related effects and to investigate the sustained effects on maximal fat oxidation (MFO) rate and proteins involved in intramuscular lipid metabolism. Thirteen endurance‐trained males (age 23‐44 years; O2‐max, 63.9 ± 4.6 mL·kg?1·min?1) were randomized into two groups: sleep‐low (LOW‐CHO) or high CHO availability (HIGH‐CHO) in three weekly training blocks over 4 weeks. The acute metabolic response was investigated during 60 minutes of exercise within the last 3 weeks of the intervention. Pre‐ and post‐intervention, 30‐minute time‐trial performance was investigated after a 90‐minute pre‐load, which as a novel approach included nine intense intervals (and estimation of MFO). Additionally, muscle biopsies (v. lateralis) were obtained to investigate expression of proteins involved in intramuscular lipid metabolism using Western blotting. During acute exercise, average fat oxidation rate was ~36% higher in LOW‐CHO compared to HIGH‐CHO (P = .03). This did not translate into sustained effects on MFO. Time‐trial performance increased equally in both groups (overall time effect: P = .005). We observed no effect on intramuscular proteins involved in lipolysis (ATGL, G0S2, CGI‐58, HSL) or fatty acid transport and β‐oxidation (CD‐36 and HAD, respectively). In conclusion, the sleep‐low model did not induce sustained effects on MFO, endurance performance, or proteins involved in intramuscular lipid metabolism when compared to HIGH‐CHO. Our study therefore questions the transferability of acute effects of the sleep‐low model to superior sustained adaptations.  相似文献

High plasma homocysteine concentrations have been associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease, whereas plasma HDL concentration is inversely correlated to such disorders. We hypothesized that hyperhomocysteinemic subjects may have dysfunctional HDL. We therefore investigated the ability of serum from hyperhomocysteinemic male and female subjects (n = 10) and control subjects (n = 10) to induce cholesterol efflux and to inhibit release of inflammatory mediators from human umbilical vein endothelial cell. We found that serum from hyperhomocysteinemic subjects had impaired ability to induce cholesterol efflux from lipid-loaded macrophages compared with healthy controls. HDL from those with markedly raised homocysteine concentrations had a reduced antiinflammatory effect in tumor necrosis factor-alpha-activated endothelial cells with an attenuated suppressive effect on interleukin-6 growth-related oncogene-alpha release. Also, the activity of paraoxonase in serum, a multifunctional enzyme with antioxidative effects in relation to the function of HDL, was significantly reduced in hyperhomocysteinemic subjects, in particular those with markedly raised homocysteine concentration. Our findings suggest that hyperhomocysteinemic individuals have dysfunctional HDL particles with attenuated antiatherogenic activity and may represent a novel explanation for the increased risk of cardiovascular events in these individuals.  相似文献

Acute eczema is an inflammatory skin disease characterized by the formation of small intraepidermal blisters, reduction of the adhesion molecule E-cadherin from the keratinocyte surface, and impaired keratinocyte cohesion. Here, we reveal that the disintegrin and metalloprotease ADAM10 is critically involved in regulating E-cadherin cell-surface expression in cultured primary human keratinocytes and in diseased human skin. Proinflammatory cytokines, transforming growth factor-beta, and lipopolysaccharide led to increased release of soluble E-cadherin by activating mitogen-activated protein kinase signaling in cultured keratinocytes. Moreover, these stimuli decreased the amount of pro-ADAM10 and increased the level of the active protease, leading to loss of E-cadherin from the cell surface and decreased keratinocyte cohesion. In situ examination and immunoblot analyses of E-cadherin and ADAM10 expression in lesional skin of eczema revealed that the reduction of E-cadherin expression in areas of blister formation closely correlated with increased level of ADAM10 expression and elevated E-cadherin shedding. Our data suggest that ADAM10-mediated E-cadherin proteolysis leads to the impaired cohesion of keratinocytes observed in eczematous dermatitis and provide previously unreported insights into the understanding of the molecular mechanisms involved in inflammatory diseases with loss in epithelial integrity.  相似文献

Background. Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with implantation of a metal stent is a common procedure performed in patients with symptomatic ischaemic heart disease. Intracoronary stents typically have a backbone of stainless steel, which contains nickel, chromium, and molybdenum, and it remains unclear whether individuals who are allergic to these metals have an increased risk of restenosis after PCI with stent implantation. Objectives. To further evaluate whether dermatitis patients with nickel and/or chromium allergy had an increased risk of developing cardiac in‐stent restenosis with stainless steel stents. Methods. An individual‐level linkage study was performed to identify dermatitis patients who had been patch tested with the European baseline series between 1979 and 2007 at Gentofte University Hospital (N = 18794) and who had also undergone PCI at some point in a Danish hospital. Results. One hundred and forty‐nine (0.8%) dermatitis patients who had undergone PCI with a metal stent were included. One hundred and forty‐seven were patch‐tested before undergoing PCI. Of the patients, 14.1% (21/149) had cardiac in‐stent restenosis. Among patients with metal allergy, 2 (11.8%) had restenosis. Conclusions. Nickel and/or chromium allergy in dermatitis patients does not appear to increase the overall risk of in‐stent restenosis after PCI.  相似文献
