Well-circumscribed, minimally enhancing glioblastoma multiforme of the trigone: a case report and review of the literature

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is known to present within the lateral ventricle but is relatively infrequent and predominantly found in the frontal horn or body of the ventricle. A GBM located within the trigone is rare, and one that appears well-circumscribed, homogeneous, and minimally contrast enhancing, as demonstrated in this patient, is highly unusual.     

N-Methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine-induced senescence-like growth arrest in colon cancer cells is associated with loss of adenomatous polyposis coli protein,microtubule organization,and telomeric DNA

Background  

Cellular senescence is a state in which mammalian cells enter into an irreversible growth arrest and altered biological functions. The senescence response in mammalian cells can be elicited by DNA-damaging agents. In the present study we report that the DNA-damaging agent N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (MNNG) is able to induce senescence in the HCT-116 colon cancer cell line.     

Hallervorden Spatz Disease

A nine-month-old infant presented with fever and loss of milestones. Examination revealed intermittent rigidity and dystonic movements. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) shows decreased signal intensity in globus pallidus and substantia nigra, indicative of iron deposition, suggesting Hallervorden Spatz Disease. The dopamine–neuromelanine system has been postulated to be the possible pathogenesis. Gene mapping has located the defect to be in the coding sequence of a gene called PANK– 2. Prenatal diagnosis is possible. The case is reported because of its rarity and early presentation.     

Leiomyoma of the vagina: an unusual presentation

Vaginal leiomyomas are rare. They usually arise from the anterior vaginal wall. We report a case of a vaginal leiomyoma arising from the right lateral wall that presented as a gluteal swelling with pus discharging per vagina, creating a clinical dilemma in diagnosis. Preoperative imaging and biopsy may help to rule out malignancy. The size of the tumor necessitated abdominoperineal approach and hysterectomy for better surgical access. To the best of our knowledge such a clinical presentation of a vaginal leiomyoma has not been reported in the literature.     

Using accountability to improve reproductive health care

Accountability is best understood as a referee of the dynamics in two-way relationships, often between unequal partners. The literature on accountability distinguishes between political, fiscal, administrative, legal and constitutional accountability. This paper focuses on accountability mechanisms in health care and how they mediate between service providers and communities and between different kinds of health personnel at the primary health care level. It refers to case studies of participatory processes for improving sexual and reproductive health service delivery. Information, dialogue and negotiation are important elements that enable accountability mechanisms to address problems by supporting change and engagement between participants. In order to succeed, however, efforts towards better accountability that broaden the participation of users must take into account the social contexts and the policy and service delivery systems in which they are applied, address power relations and improve the representation of marginalised groups within communities and service delivery systems.     

Possible maternal inheritance of a common obstructive urinary tract anomaly. Report of a case of a woman with multiple urinary tract infections and two sons with posterior urethral valves

BACKGROUND: Posterior urethral valves (PUVs) are the most common cause of lower urinary tract obstruction in boys. Several prior reports have described PUV in siblings and twins, often with a variable phenotype. CASE: PUVs were found in two brothers. The first child had developmental delay, while the second had a branchial cleft cyst and an anteriorly rotated right ear. The children's mother had a history of numerous urinary tract infections of unknown etiology. CONCLUSION: Though most cases of PUV appear to be sporadic, there are reports that suggest a partial genetic etiology, as our case suggests.
