Cosmocerca kalesari sp. nov. from the large intestine of frogs, Euphlyctis cyanophlyctis, collected in the Kalesar Wildlife Sanctuary, India is described and photomicrographed. It is most similar to those species bearing 5 pairs of plectanes, i.e., C. acanthurum, C. banyulensis, C. cruzi, C. japonica, C. ornata, C. novaeguineae, C. paraguayensis, C. parva, C. podicipinus and C. travassosi, but differs from these species with the exception of C. cruzi and C. japonica in the length of spicules and length of gubernaculum. The new species can be separated from C. cruzi and C. japonica by the arrangement of postanal mammiliform papillae: 6 postanal pairs in C. kalesari sp. nov.; 4 postanal pairs in C. cruzi; no postanal mammiliform papillae in C. japonica. Cosmocerca kalesari sp. nov. represents the 25th species assigned to the genus, but only the second species from the Oriental region. 相似文献
Considering the constant exposure of fish to copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO-NPs) and copper sulphate (CuSO4) in natural aquatic environments as a result of increased usage of these chemicals in industry, medicine and aquaculture/agriculture over the past few decenniums, the current investigation aimed to reveal their comparative hemotoxic effects on freshwater fish Oreochromis niloticus by measuring hematological and blood oxidative stress biomarkers and Cu levels. Fish were exposed to 0.05 mg/L CuO-NPs and CuSO4 for 4 and 21 days. Both copper forms decreased erythrocyte, hematocrit, and hemoglobin values, and superoxide dismutase and catalase activities while they elevated glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity, and glutathione, malondialdehyde and Cu levels. Leukocyte levels and glutathione peroxidase activity did not show any significant change. In a conclusion, the current research demonstrates that CuO-NPs and CuSO4 for O. niloticus have similar hemotoxic effects, however, CuO-NPs are slightly more toxic than CuSO4 regarding hematological changes and oxidative stress observed.
Countries around the globe have responded to pandemic preparedness and developed strategies to cope with the COVID-19 crisis. In this context, the role of healthcare professionals is of paramount importance. Pharmacists are playing a vital role in dealing, preparedness, prevention, protection, promoting access to medicines and to improve health outcomes during this crisis. In this context, “Drive-thru” pharmacy services improve access to medicines while ensuring the preventive measures suggested by the World Health Organization. This commentary provides an overview of opportunities and challenges related to the implementation of “drive-thru pharmacy services” and their role in improving public health during this crisis. 相似文献
AIMS: The aim of this study was to determine the pharmacokinetic parameters of flutamide, a nonsteroidal antiandrogenic compound, and its pharmacologically active metabolite, hydroxyflutamide, in renal insufficiency. Haemodialysis (HD) clearance of flutamide and hydroxyflutamide was also determined. METHODS: Pharmacokinetic parameters were assessed for flutamide and hydroxyflutamide in 26 male subjects with normal renal function (creatinine clearance by 24 h urine collection, CLcr, greater than 80 ml min(-1) 1.73 m(-2); n=6) or reduced renal function; CLcr=50-80 (n=7), 30-49 (n=3), 5-29 (n=4), and <5 ml min(-1) 1.73 m(-2)-HD (n=6), following a single, oral 250 mg flutamide dose. Subjects undergoing HD received a second 250 mg dose of flutamide 4 h prior to HD; blood and dialysate were collected during HD to determine dialysability of flutamide and hydroxyflutamide. RESULTS: Cmax, tmax, AUC, t1/2, and renal clearance of flutamide and hydroxyflutamide did not differ between groups. Less than 1% of the dose appeared in dialysate as hydroxyflutamide. No serious adverse events were observed. CONCLUSIONS: Renal function did not affect flutamide nor hydroxyflutamide disposition. HD did not alter hydroxyflutamide pharmacokinetics. Dosing adjustments for renal impairment or HD are not indicated for flutamide. 相似文献
Paradoxical emboli occur when venous embolic material passes into the arterial circulation (via a right-to-left cardiac shunt). The association of paradoxical emboli and arterial ischaemia has been described previously, especially with respect to cerebral infarcts. We describe a case in which double paradoxical emboli following a long haul flight, resulted in emergency amputation of an upper limb. Amputation resulting from a paradoxical embolus has not previously been described. 相似文献
The objective of this study was to determine risk factors for non-communicable diseases (NCDs) on the basis of socio-demographic characteristics, lifestyle-related determinants, environmental and psychological characteristics, and individual and family disease history among university students in Bangladesh.
Study design
Cross-sectional survey.
Methods
Using the WHO STEPwise approach for NCDs, a cross-sectional study was conducted among 1,140 students. The collected data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software, version 22.
Results
In all, 29.2% of the respondents (BMI?≥?23.00 kg/m2) were overweight and/or obese, and almost two-thirds (65%) of them did not take part in any physical activity (PA). A third (33.3%, p?=?0.002) of male smokers reported health problems and it was found that environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) was significantly responsible for developing asthma (OR?=?0.55; CI?=?0.33–0.93). Individual and family history of NCDs was statistically significant for obesity and asthma and considerably increased the odds ratio for heart disease.
Conclusion
This study shows that the number of students suffering from different types of NCDs is not negligible. Their lifestyle and family history of NCDs are responsible for this to a significant extent. Urgent initiatives should be taken to rein in the spread of NCDs among the youth of Bangladesh.
OBJECTIVES: Although cigarette smoking is the most well-established environmental risk factor for pancreatic cancer, the interaction between smoking and other risk factors has not been assessed. We evaluated the independent effects of multiple risk factors for pancreatic cancer and determined whether the magnitude of cigarette smoking was modified by other risk factors in men and women. METHODS: We conducted a hospital-based case-control study involving 808 patients with pathologically diagnosed pancreatic cancer and 808 healthy frequency-matched controls. Information on risk factors was collected by personal interview, and unconditional logistic regression was used to determine adjusted odds ratios (AORs) by the maximum-likelihood method. RESULTS: Cigarette smoking, family history of pancreatic cancer, heavy alcohol consumption (>60 mL ethanol/day), diabetes mellitus, and history of pancreatitis were significant risk factors for pancreatic cancer. We found synergistic interactions between cigarette smoking and family history of pancreatic cancer (AOR 12.8, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.6-108.9) and diabetes mellitus (AOR 9.3, 95% CI 2.0-44.1) in women, according to an additive model. Approximately 23%, 9%, 3%, and 5% of pancreatic cancer cases in this study were related to cigarette smoking, diabetes mellitus, heavy alcohol consumption, and family history of pancreatic cancer, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The significant synergy between these risk factors suggests a common pathway for carcinogenesis of the pancreas. Determining the underlying mechanisms for such synergies may lead to the development of pancreatic cancer prevention strategies for high-risk individuals. 相似文献
Molecular assays for monitoring sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine-resistant Plasmodium falciparum have not been implemented because of the genetic and statistical complexity of the parasite mutations that confer resistance and their relation to treatment outcomes. This study analyzed pretreatment dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) and dihydropteroate synthase (DHPS) genotypes and treatment outcomes in a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine and chlorproguanil-dapsone treatment for uncomplicated P. falciparum malaria. Multiple logistic regression was used to identify mutations that were predictive of treatment failure and to identify interactions and confounding factors. Infections caused by parasites with 3 DHFR mutations and 2 DHPS mutations (the "quintuple mutant") were associated with sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine treatment failure but not with chlorproguanil-dapsone treatment failure. The presence of a single DHFR mutation (Arg-59) with a single DHPS mutation (Glu-540) accurately predicted the presence of the quintuple mutant. If this model is validated in other populations, it will finally be possible to use molecular markers for surveillance of antifolate-resistant P. falciparum malaria in Africa. 相似文献
