The author presents 83 cases of "a frigore" peripheral facial palsy, occurred in the mountain city of Petropolis which has characteristics such as a tropical climate without any traces of a dry season and an average temperature of 50 degrees F to 73.5 degrees F. The author relates them with virus infections which appear within a year period. Fifty six patients belong to his clinic and have a follow up, while other 25 patients proceed from another clinics and from them he only has reports on sex, age, side of palsy and the beginning of illness. He shows that the largest number of cases occurred along the months of May, August, September and October. Season distribution for southern hemisphere is analysed. He also considers etiology, incidence, prevalence, treatment and results on patients studied.  相似文献

The effects of Hi and ACH aerosol and of intravenous infusion of compound 48/80 on bronchoconstriction and plasma levels of Hi, TXB2, KH2PGF2 and KH2PGE2 were investigated in 11 bastard dogs. Administration of Hi and ACH aerosol induced bronchoconstriction accompanied by an increase in the plasma levels of Hi and TXB2. No effect on the plasma levels of KH2PGF2 and KH2PGE2 was detected. Release of endogenous Hi by compound 48/80 induced bronchoconstriction and significant increases in the plasma levels of TXB2 as well as of KH2PGF2 and KH2PGE2. The effects of a second administration of Hi and ACH aerosols after compound 48/80 did not differ qualitatively from the effects of the first aerosol administration. However, quantitatively, the second Hi aerosol induced significantly less bronchoconstriction and TXB2 release. Similarly, effects of the second ACH aerosol tended to be decreased as compared to the first ACH aerosol, although the difference was not significant. The diminished effect of the agonists could be due to receptor desensibilization and/or release of adrenaline, which in turn decreases bronchoconstriction and eicosanoid release.  相似文献

Of the nasopharyngeal cultures recovered from 942 day care center (DCC) attendees in Lisbon, Portugal, 591 (62%) yielded Streptococcus pneumoniae during a surveillance performed in February and March of 1999. Forty percent of the isolates were resistant to one or more antimicrobial agents. In particular, 2% were penicillin resistant and 20% had intermediate penicillin resistance. Multidrug resistance to macrolides, lincosamides, and tetracycline was the most frequent antibiotype (17% of all isolates). Serotyping and molecular typing by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis were performed for 202 out of 237 drug-resistant pneumococci (DRPn). The most frequent serotypes were 6B (26%), 14 (22%), 19F (16%), 23F (10%), and nontypeable (12%). The majority (67%) of the DRPn strains were representatives of nine international clones included in the Pneumococcal Molecular Epidemiology Network; eight of them had been detected in previous studies. Fourteen novel clones were identified, corresponding to 26% of the DRPn strains. The remaining 7% of the strains were local clones detected in our previous studies. Comparison with studies conducted since 1996 in Portuguese DCCs identified several trends: (i) the rate of DRPn frequency has fluctuated between 40 and 50%; (ii) the serotypes most frequently recovered have remained the same; (iii) nontypeable strains appear to be increasing in frequency; and (iv) a clone of serotype 33F emerged in 1999. Together, our observations highlight that the nasopharynxes of children in DCCs are a melting pot of successful DRPn clones that are important to study and monitor if we aim to gain a better understanding on the epidemiology of this pathogen.  相似文献

The hypo-osmotic swelling test (HOST or HOS test) usually takes into consideration the total HOS response value with no emphasis either on the value of the response subtypes or the response evaluation time. This study investigated the time course of HOS responses and analysed their physiological relevance. Raw semen spermatozoa and Percoll washed spermatozoa were used in the experiment. The morphological changes in the sperm tail were monitored by incubating the spermatozoa in the hypo- osmotic solution for 16 different time periods. The HOS reactive spermatozoa and the type of HOS reaction (swelling subtypes) of the samples subjected to different duration of treatment were identified under a phase contrast microscope. Also the fate of individual spermatozoa in a hypo-osmotic environment were monitored for 30 min. In spermatozoa exposed to a hypo-osmotic solution, the motility lasted usually less than 2 min and motility characteristics were uniquely different from that of the spermatozoa under iso-osmotic conditions. The HOS response development was permanent but the motility loss due to hypo-osmotic shock was reversible up to 1 min of incubation. There was an indication of ordered transition among the HOS swelling subtypes apparently initiating with subtype b destined to c, d, e, f and g. Further, the subtypes a and g showed gradual decrease and increase, respectively, while subtype b showed abrupt initial increase and then gradual decrease. Transition from b to g could be direct or via one or more than one subtypes. Ultrastructure based analysis indicated that HOS response subtypes are the apparent reflection of the differences in the cytoskeletal assembly of the sperm tail and thus may be identifying different physiological variants in the sperm population. These results indicate that shorter incubation is essential to document the kinetics of various HOS responses but the conventional HOS test misses these important HOS features because of lengthy incubation. Since the time course of ordered transition of HOS responses will vary more than the total HOS response in semen of different aetiologies, the importance of HOS response subtypes and response evaluation time should be taken into consideration when applying HOS test.   相似文献

Several observations point to the involvement of disturbed lipid biology in schizophrenia. Reduced response to niacin flushing test, which involves vasodilatation induced by prostaglandin D2 (PGD2), is among the evidences, together with decreased CSF levels of lipocalin-type prostaglandin D2 synthase (PTGDS), the enzyme responsible for the synthesis of PGD2 in the brain. Since PTGDS is also a carrier for lipophilic molecules such as retinoids and thyroid hormones, altered PTGDS levels might influence both PGD2-mediated signaling, and vitamin A and thyroid hormone availability. To test whether genetic variants of PTGDS are involved in the etiology of schizophrenia, we searched for variants in the coding and regulatory regions of the gene. We identified four previously described polymorphisms. Using two case-control samples from Portugal and Brazil, none of the polymorphisms tested was associated with the disease. In addition, no transmission distortion was observed in an independent parents-offspring sample from the Azorean Islands. Our data do not support the involvement of the PTGDS gene in the etiology of schizophrenia.  相似文献

Changes in high-energy phosphate metabolites (ATP and phosphocreatine) were monitored, in real time, by 31P-nuclear magnetic resonance in primary cell cultures of neurons and astrocytes during periods of hypoxia, ischemia and hypoglycemia, and also during the recovery periods following the re-establishment of standard conditions. Cells were immobilized in basement membrane gel threads and perfused with oxygen-depleted medium (oxygen concentration below 30 microM), to create hypoxic conditions, or with aerobic medium (oxygen concentration approximately 460 microM) containing different concentrations of glucose (hypoglycemia). Ischemic conditions were imposed by stopping perfusion for different periods of time (15 min to 2 h). The experimental set-up enabled the acquisition of 31P-spectra with high signal-to-noise ratio within 10-20 min for both cell types. The effect of hypoxia on glucose metabolism was assessed by 13C-NMR using [1-13C]glucose as substrate. The levels of ATP and PCr in astrocytes were unaffected during hypoxia (up to 2 h), but decreased notably under ischemia. In neurons, hypoxic periods caused a sharp drop of the ATP and PCr levels, and considerable damage to the capacity of neurons to replenish the ATP and PCr pools upon returning to normoxic conditions. However, neurons were remarkably less sensitive to ischemic conditions, the ATP and PCr pools being restored quickly, even after 2 h under challenging conditions. The data show that neurons were more resistant to ischemia than astrocytes, and suggest that the capacity to sustain the pools of ATP and PCr was part of the neuronal protective strategy.  相似文献
