Simulation of thymus hypo- and hyperplasia by thymalin in guinea pigs

Potentialities of the modulation of thymus function with thymalin and the hormonal-immunological status in simulated hypo- and hyperplasia of the thymus. The advisability of the use of the drug was shown.     

The possibilities for the long-term outpatient use of anthracyclines and platinum compounds

The results of chemotherapy administered to 47 cancer outpatients (a total of 222 cycles) were studied. Leukopenia, alopecia, nausea and vomiting, mostly moderate, were the most frequent side-effects. Outpatient chemotherapy proved as effective as that given under hospital conditions.     

Secretion of somatotropic hormone in patients with pancreatitis

The concentration of somatotropic hormone (STH) was measured by radioimmunoassay in 108 patients with acute and chronic pancreatitis and in 15 healthy persons. In addition, to study the reserve capacity of the somatotropic function of the pituitary, insulin hypoglycemia was employed. It was established that during exacerbation, the pancreatitis patients manifested an increase in the hormone content. In the patients suffering from acute pancreatitis, the STH level returned to normal following treatment. In chronic pancreatitis, the hormone concentration remained elevated after treatment. No correlation was discovered between alterations in the STH level and the activity of pancreatic enzymes. The data obtained point to a definite role of STH in the pathogenesis of chronic pancreatitis.     

Optimization of diagnosis and methods of liver resection in alveolar echinococcosis]

36 resections of the liver were carried out. 66.7% of them were hemihepatectomies and extended hemihepatectomies due to sever parasitic lesions of the liver parenchyma. During resections of the liver ultrasonic scalpel and high frequency electrocoagulation, compression of the hepatoduodenal ligament under the control of the intraoperative sonography were performed. In 4 patients (11.1%) complications were observed: hepatic insufficiency (2 cases), injury of inferior vena cava (1 case) and infrahepatic abscess (1 case). Lethality made up 3.8% (1 patient died due to development of acute hepatic insufficiency after extended right-sided hemihepatectomy.

Causes of late diagnosis of nasopharyngeal cancer

By the onset of specific therapy of 240 patients with nasopharyngeal cancer 96.6% of them were in stage III (20%) and stage IV (76.6%) of the disease. The causes of delayed diagnosis and therapy included inadequate oncology concern of out-patient physicians, careless attitude of most patients towards their own health condition, low quality of physical examinations and limited diagnostic facilities.     

Effect of chronic stress during pregnancy on the thyroid status of mother and progeny

The effect of chronic stress (electric stimulation) in the second half-period of pregnancy on the status of the hypophyseothyroid system of mother and her progeny was studied. Experiments were staged on 100 pregnant rats and their progeny aged 20 days, 1, 2, 3 and 6 mos. The content of thyroxine (T4), triiodothyronine (T3) and thyrotropic hormone (TTH) in the blood of mother (in the midterm and at the end of pregnancy) and progeny was determined by a radioimmunoassay. Chronic stress during pregnancy led to a decrease in the level of thyroid hormones by the end of pregnancy, the decrease being more significant than that in controls. In the progeny of experimental rats higher T4 content (as compared to that in controls) was accompanied by a lowered level of T3 indicating a decrease in the metabolism of thyroid hormones. These changes were most noticeable at early stages of development but were preserved till puberty. Thus chronic stress during pregnancy led to a decrease in the content of thyroid hormones in the mother's blood, an increase in thyroid function of progeny, and a decrease in its general thyroid status.     

Diagnosis and surgical treatment of non-neoplastic diseases of the external bile ducts

In a work, the results of examination and operative treatment of 159 patients with non-tumor diseases of the extrahepatic bile ducts are analysed. After the operation, 55 (32.7%) developed complications, 12 (7.5%) patients died.
