It is important to determine the changes in alveolar bone during periodontal treatments. At present, radiography is widely used to determine the changes. But small changes in alveolar bone cannot be detected on X-ray films. To detect these small changes, a direct observation system using gamma-ray from 133Ba was considered. Using a multi-channel analyzer, gamma-ray absorption through the bone was detected in this method. This method was compared with densitometric measurement on the films using sliced animal bone. The newly developed method detected the bone changes more accurately. To evaluate the influence of soft tissue, Mix-D was used in both measurements. 133Ba absorptiometry showed that soft tissue did not influence the measurement more than the densitometric method.  相似文献

PURPOSE: To investigate whether inflammatory responses are more severe in uveitic eyes than nonuveitic eyes when acrylic intraocular lens (IOL) is implanted after cataract surgery. METHODS: Clear lens removal (phacoemulsification and aspiration) was conducted and the hydrophobic acrylic IOL (AR40e, AMO) was implanted in adult albino rabbits. Just after the operation, rabbits were divided into two groups. One group (nine rabbits) received intravitreal injection of lipopolysaccharide (LPS, 200 ng/10 microl) into both eyes to induce endotoxin-induced uveitis (EIU) and the other group (nine rabbits) received intravitreal injection of phosphate-buffered saline (PBS, 10 microl) into both eyes as the control. Aqueous humour (AH) and IOLs were harvested 1, 3 , and 7 days after the intravitreal injection. The infiltrating cell number in AH was counted and the protein concentration of AH was measured. IOLs were evaluated morphologically. RESULTS: At 1 day after intravitreal injection, both the infiltrating cell number in AH and protein concentration of AH were significantly higher in the LPS-injected group than in the PBS-injected group. Similarly, more inflammatory cells attached to the surfaces of the IOLs in the LPS-injected group. However, 7 days later, inflammatory reactions subsided and no clear differences in any of the parameters examined were observed between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: At 7 days after the operation, inflammatory reactions in eyes implanted with the hydrophobic acrylic IOLs were similar in uveitic eyes and nonuveitic eyes. The data suggest that the hydrophobic acrylic IOLs may be suitable for patients with uveitis.  相似文献

PURPOSE: To assess hemodynamic changes in two patients with severely affected retinal circulation. METHODS: A 62-year-old man with central retinal artery occlusion and a 46-year-old woman with branch retinal vein occlusion were studied by fluorescein angiography with a scanning laser ophthalmoscope (SLO). Fluorescein angiography with SLO revealed hypofluorescent clumps of different sizes and hyperfluorescent dots in large retinal vessels. The velocities of the hypofluorescent clumps were calculated between two points on the same vessel, and movements of the hypofluorescent clumps and the hyperfluorescent dots were investigated. RESULTS: The velocities of the hypofluorescent clumps were slow and varied in the same vessel. The velocities of the hypofluorescent clumps increased at the sites with narrow calibers. The hypofluorescent clumps occasionally changed size in the bloodstream. The hypofluorescent clumps flowed along the walls of retinal vessels. Distance between consecutive hypofluorescent clumps was wide. Some vessels filled with hypofluorescent clumps were also detected. Rolling hyperfluorescent dots were seen in fluorescent plasma. CONCLUSIONS: The hypofluorescent clumps were concluded to be packed erythrocytes and the hyperfluorescent dots corresponded to leukocytes and platelets moving in the vessels. Fluorescein angiography with SLO is a useful method for evaluating hemodynamic changes using the hypofluorescent clumps in severely affected retinal circulation.  相似文献

Diabetes is a growing health problem worldwide. It is recognized as a particular threat to public health of the third world communities, particularly those living in rapidly developing countries. Therefore, the present study was conducted aiming at: assessment of the quality of primary health care (PHC) services provided for the control of diabetes mellitus (DM) in Alexandria; and opportunistic screening of high risk individuals attending PHC facilities for DM. Accordingly, the availability of human and nonhuman resources for DM control in two rural and two urban PHC centers in Alexandria (one of them was serving a desert area) was assessed by a pre-designed checklist 920 adult PHC attendants were screened for risk factors of DM. Individuals having more than one of the following risk factors: age above 50 years, overweight (body mass index > or =27 kg/m2), family history of DM in first degree relatives, history of hypertension, hypertension (systolic blood pressure > or =140 mm Hg and /or diastolic blood pressure > or =90 mm Hg), history of hyperlipidemia and history of gestational diabetes or birth of a large sized baby in females- were subjected to random capillary blood glucose (RCBG) testing. Cases were considered likely diabetic if RCBG was >200 mg/dl The performance of all PHC physicians examining and managing 560 diabetic patients was observed over a period of two months. One fourth of the diabetic cases were checked for the level of glycaemic control by fasting capillary blood glucose testing. The results revealed that 61.7% of the studied PHC attendants were at risk of developing DM and 14% were likely diabetic, with an urban: desert ratio of 2:1 The following factors were found to be independently associated with an increasing risk of DM occurrence among males: overweight (about 14 folds), family history of DM (9 folds), age above 50 years and history of hypertension (4 folds each). Whereas, among females the following risk factors were found: family history of DM (8 folds), history of gestational diabetes (6 folds) and overweight (4 folds). The majority of diabetic patients were poorly examined, investigated and managed; and an optimal level of glycaemic control was achieved in only 12.9% of the cases, as the PHC physicians didn't follow a model treatment plan for DM and due to unavailability of some equipment, laboratory facilities and essential drugs.  相似文献

We previously reported that several gastric irritants, including ethanol, hydrogen peroxide, and hydrochloric acid, induced both necrosis and apoptosis in cultured gastric mucosal cells. In the present study, we examined the effects of sucralfate, a unique gastroprotective drug, on gastric irritant-induced necrosis and apoptosis produced in vitro. Sucralfate strongly inhibited ethanol-induced necrosis in primary cultures of guinea pig gastric mucosal cells. The preincubation of cells with sucralfate was not necessary for its cytoprotective effect to be observed, thus making its mechanism of action different from that of other gastroprotective drugs. Necrosis of gastric mucosal cells induced by hydrogen peroxide or indomethacin was also suppressed by sucralfate. On the other hand, sucralfate only weakly inhibited ethanol-induced apoptosis. These results suggest that the cytoprotective effect of sucralfate on gastric mucosa in vivo can be explained, at least in part, by its inhibitory effect on gastric irritant-induced necrosis.  相似文献

We here examined whether exposure of mice to UV-B affected their susceptibility to the murine malaria parasite Plasmodium chabaudi. When BALB/c mice with depilated skin were irradiated with UV-B and subsequently infected with the parasite, 80 to 100% of the UV-B-irradiated mice died within 12 days of infection with a sublethal dose. In addition, UV-B irradiation of C57BL/10 (B-10) mice, which are otherwise naturally resistant to the parasites, rendered them susceptible, and 100% of irradiated B-10 mice died within 11 days postinfection. The level of plasma gamma interferon (IFN-gamma) in unirradiated B-10 mice at 5 days after infection increased to 566 pg/ml, whereas the UV-B exposure of mice impaired the production of IFN-gamma, which showed a maximum level of 65 pg/ml in response to the parasite infection. The maximum level of plasma interleukin-10 in UV-B-irradiated mice in response to the parasite infection was approximately 1,100 pg/ml, which was approximately fourfold higher than the maximum level in unirradiated control mice. When UV-B-irradiated B-10 mice were administered murine recombinant IFN-gamma after infection, the mice regained parasite resistance. These results demonstrated that the UV-B exposure of mice enhances the susceptibility to the malaria parasites and suggested that the enhanced susceptibility following UV-B exposure was mediated by impairment of IFN-gamma production in response to the parasite infection.  相似文献
