Interleukin‐8‐producing primary cardiac undifferentiated sarcoma in a child with sustained fever

We report the case of a 12‐year‐old boy with primary undifferentiated sarcoma of the left atrium. He had sustained fever during the clinical course and multiple lung and brain metastases. Chemotherapy and irradiation were ineffective; he died 41 days after hospitalization. On retrospective analysis, interleukin‐8 (IL‐8) was elevated; this was supported by immunohistochemistry and gene expression analysis of tumor samples. IL‐8 continued to increase with tumor progression accompanied by elevated neutrophil count and C‐reactive protein. IL‐8 is involved in malignant tumor proliferation, migration, and angiogenesis and may have been related to the clinical condition and prognosis in the present case.

Renal Squamous Cell Carcinoma-related Polymyositis in a Patient with Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease

A 74-year-old Japanese woman diagnosed with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) was admitted to our institute for the further examination of right-side groin pain developing in the past week. The patient was diagnosed with polymyositis (PM). Diagnostic imaging showed a mass lesion measuring 8 cm and a renal stone in the right kidney. Immediately following surgical resection of the right kidney, the patient''s serum CK decreased to the normal range. A histopathological analysis showed well-differentiated squamous cell carcinoma. In conclusion, this case showed a close relationship between the occurrence of squamous cell carcinoma and the development of PM in an ADPKD patient.

Small ileal neurofibroma causing intussusception in a non-neurofibromatosis patient

Neurofibromas in the small intestine are usually accompanied by von Recklinghausen's disease (neurofibromatosis), and usually originate in the intramuscular plexus of Auerbach. We present here a solitary neurofibroma, which caused an ileocolic intussusception, originating in the submucosal plexus of Meissner in a non-neurofibromatosis patient. To our knowledge, there is no previous report of a neurofibroma originating in the plexus of Meissner. This condition was clearly confirmed by macroscopic and microscopic evaluation.     

Vaccination with clumping factor A and fibronectin binding protein A to prevent Staphylococcus aureus infection of an aortic patch in mice

Staphylococcus aureus is a leading cause of ventricular assist device-related infections. This study evaluated the protective effect against S. aureus infection of active and passive immunization that targeted 3 proteins involved in bacterial attachment to a murine intra-aortic polyurethane patch. Active immunization of mice with a combination of the A domains of clumping factor A (ClfA), fibronectin-binding protein A (FnBPA) and fibronectin-binding protein B or passive immunization with monoclonal antibodies against ClfA and FnBPA resulted in a higher level of protection than that obtained by vaccination with either protein or antibody alone. The combination of antibodies or protein antigens appears to provide enhanced protection against prosthetic-device infection.
