Health and health care utilisation among asylum seekers and refugees in the Netherlands: design of a study

Background  

This article discusses the design of a study on the prevalence of health problems (both physical and mental) and the utilisation of health care services among asylum seekers and refugees in the Netherlands, including factors that may be related to their health and their utilisation of these services.     

Automated 96-well liquid-liquid back extraction liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method for the determination of ABT-202 in human plasma

A high-throughput bioanalytical method using automated sample transferring, automated liquid-liquid back extraction and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry was developed in a GLP regulated environment for the determination of ABT-202 in human plasma. Samples of 0.30 ml were transferred into 96-well plate using an automatic liquid handler. Automated liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) was carried out on a 96-channel programmable liquid handling workstation using methyl tert-butyl ether as the extraction solvent. A dual-HPLC with single mass spectrometer configuration was utilized to provide a reliable and routine means to increase sample throughput. The standard curve range was 0.38-95.02 ng/ml. There was no interference from endogenous components in the blank plasma tested. The accuracy (% bias) at the lower limit of quantitation (LLOQ) was 7.7% and the precision (% CV) for samples at the LLOQ was 4.7%. The inter-day % CV and % bias of the quality control samples were < or = 6.8 and < or = 7.6%, respectively. Coefficients of determination, a measure of linearity, ranged from 0.994 to 0.997. The method was accurate and reproducible and was successfully applied to generate plasma concentration-time profiles for human subjects after low oral doses of the compound.

Progesterone for the prevention of preterm birth in women with multiple pregnancies: the AMPHIA trial

Background

Adequate vitamin D concentrations during pregnancy are necessary to neonatal calcium homeostasis, bone maturation and mineralization. The aim of study is to evaluate serum vitamin D concentrations in mothers and their newborns and effect of vitamin D deficiency on pregnancy outcomes.

Methods

552 pregnant women were recruited from Tehran University educating hospitals in the winter of 2002. Maternal and cord blood samples were taken at delivery. The serum was assayed for 25-hydroxyvitamin D3, calcium, phosphorus and parathyroid hormone.

Results

The prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in maternal and cord blood samples were 66.8% and 93.3%, respectively (<35 nmol/l). There was significant correlation between maternal and cord blood serum concentrations of vitamin D. In mothers with vitamin D deficiency, cord blood vitamin D concentrations was lower than those from normal mothers (P = .001). Also, a significant direct correlation was seen between maternal vitamin D intake and weight gain during pregnancy.

Conclusion

Consideration to adequate calcium and vitamin D intake during pregnancy is essential. Furthermore, we think it is necessary to reconsider the recommendation for vitamin D supplementation for women during pregnancy.

Comorbidity,limitations in activities and pain in patients with osteoarthritis of the hip or knee

Background  

This study aims to contribute to the knowledge of the influence of comorbidity in OA. The objectives of the study were (i) to describe the prevalence of comorbidity and (ii) to describe the relationship between comorbidity (morbidity count, severity and the presence of specific diseases) and limitations in activities and pain in elderly patients with knee or hip OA using a comprehensive inventory of comorbidity.     

Loneliness: A Concept Analysis

TOPIC. Loneliness is a universal human experience recognized since the dawn of time, yet it is unique for every individual. Loneliness can lead to both depression and low self‐esteem. PURPOSE. This article explicates the concept of loneliness through the examination of its conceptual definition and uses, defining attributes, related concepts, and empirical referents. SOURCES OF INFORMATION. Literature review using hand search and database were used as sources of information. CONCLUSION. Because loneliness is commonly encountered in nursing situations, the information provided will serve as a framework for assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation of clients.     

The Treatment of Septicemia in Pacemaker Patients

The authors analyzed the data of seven patients who had undergone open heart surgery because of pacemaker endocarditis in the past 4 years. Repeated surgical interventions on the pacemaker system were found to be the most common predisposing factors. Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis were the most common causative organisms. Two-dimensional echocardiography was important in the diagnosis of cases with atypical clinical picture and negative blood cultures. We concluded that: (1) any pacemaker patient with fever should be considered to have a pacemaker endocarditis; (2) all of these patients should be examined by two-dimenensional echocardiography; and (3) the total removal of the infected hardware seems to be the only way to achieve complete recovery.
