Chick and rat experiments were conducted to determine the efficacy of L-2-oxothiazolidine-4-carboxylate (OTC) as a cysteine (Cys) precursor for growth and hepatic glutathione (GSH) biosynthesis. Isosulfurous graded increments of OTC and Cys were added to Cys-free purified amino acid diets that were adequate in methionine. Curvilinear responses to both Cys and OTC for chicks and rats were obtained. Hepatic GSH accumulated in chicks only at dietary Cys levels above 0.10%. In rats, hepatic GSH increased linearly as dietary Cys content increased from deficient to adequate and from adequate to excessive. Utilization of OTC by chicks was as efficacious as isosulfurous levels of Cys for growth and hepatic GSH biosynthesis. In rats, OTC was slightly inferior to Cys for growth and hepatic GSH biosynthesis. Exponential regression slope-ratio growth efficacy values for OTC were 78.5% for chicks and 70.2% for rats; multiple linear regression slope-ratio GSH biosynthesis efficacy values were 80.3% for chicks and 83.7% for rats. The Budd-Chiari syndrome (BCS) is caused by hepatic venous outflow obstruction, which often leads to death as a result of portal hypertension and liver failure. Therapeutic approaches vary widely from conventional medical therapy to liver transplantation. If and when a patient suffering with BCS needs surgery remains a matter of contention. However, it is well accepted that portacaval shunt surgery and orthotopic liver transplantation represent efficient surgical treatments of this condition. We report on a patient with an eventful course after BCS was diagnosed. After portacaval shunt surgery the patient had acute liver failure and had a successful orthotopic liver transplantation. 相似文献

Mediastinal pseudocyst is an unusual complication of pancreatitis, with only four cases previously reported in children. The extent of the pseudocyst can be defined by computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging scan and preoperative aspiration of cyst fluid for amylase level can establish the diagnosis. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography to define ductal anatomy can help plan the appropriate drainage procedure. Although exceedingly rare, the diagnosis of pseudocyst should be considered for any cystic mass in the abdomen or thorax, even in the absence of elevated amylase or history suggesting pancreatitis. 相似文献

Clinical evaluation of ceftibuten (CETB, 7432-S) was performed in 20 patients with acute bronchitis. They were consisted of 10 males and 10 females aged from 20 to 80 years old. CETB was given orally in daily dose of 300 mg (18 cases) or 600 mg (2 cases) in three divided portions. The duration of administration was 3 to 14 days. Especially they were given for 7 days in 16 cases. A total of 11 strains comprising 4 strains of Staphylococcus aureus, 2 strains of beta-Streptococcus and 1 strain each of Streptococcus pneumoniae, Branhamella catarrhalis, Klebsiella oxytoca, Serratia marcescens, Acinetobacter lwoffii were identified from sputa before administration. All of the above bacteria were eradicated but, in 1 case, a strain of Streptococcus pyogenes appeared after the treatment (eradication ratio = 100%). The clinical efficacy rate was 100%: Responses were excellent in 3 cases and good in 17 cases. There was no side effect and no abnormal changes in laboratory test results. From the avobe results, it is concluded that CETB is effective, safe and useful new oral cephem on acute bronchitis. 相似文献

Adult female rats were i.p. infused (Alzet osmotic minipumps) with neurotensin (NT, 2 micrograms/rat/day for 7 days), arginine-vasopressin (AVP, 2 micrograms/rat/day for 8 days), bombesin (BM, 0.75 microgram/rat/day for 7 days) or injected with neuropeptide Y (NPY, 0.5 microgram/rat twice a day for 4 days). NT infusion increased absolute and relative thyroid gland weight and decreased serum T4 level, while serum TSH and T3 levels remained unchanged. AVP treatment increased thyroid gland weight and serum TSH and T4 levels and a similar effect was induced by prolonged BM infusion. On the other hand, NPY administration had no effect either on thyroid gland weight or on serum TSH, T4 and T3 levels. Results of the present study thus clearly demonstrate a potent stimulatory action of AVP and BM on thyroid gland function and suggest that this effect is mediated by the pituitary gland. On the contrary, prolonged NT infusion decrease serum T4 level while NPY had no effect on thyroid gland function. 相似文献

PURPOSETo define the relationship between magnetization transfer and blood-brain-barrier breakdown in multiple sclerosis lesions using gadolinium enhancement as an index of the latter.METHODSTwo hundred twenty lesions (high-signal abnormalities on T2-weighted images) in 35 multiple sclerosis patients were studied with gadolinium-enhanced spin-echo imaging and magnetization transfer. Lesions were divided into groups having nodular or uniform enhancement, ring enhancement, or no enhancement after gadolinium administration. For 133 lesions, T1-weighted images without contrast enhancement were also analyzed. These lesions were categorized as isointense or hypointense based on their appearance on the unenhanced T1-weighted images.RESULTSThere was no difference between the magnetization transfer ratio (MTR) of lesions as a function of enhancement. MTR of hypointense lesions on unenhanced T1-weighted images was, however, lower than the MTR of isointense lesions.CONCLUSIONWe speculate that diminished MTR may reflect diminished myelin content and that hypointensity on T1-weighted images corresponds to demyelination. Central regions of ring-enhancing lesions had a lower MTR than the periphery, suggesting that demyelination in multiple sclerosis lesions occurs centrifugally. In addition, the short-repetition-time pulse sequence seems useful in the evaluation of myelin loss in patients with multiple sclerosis. 相似文献

The yellow color of atherosclerotic plaque is due to the presence of carotenoids, which absorb light between 430–530 nm and account for the preferential ablation of plaque by the pulsed dye laser operating at 480 nm. This study was designed to examine tissue uptake of β-carotene and the effect of uptake on arterial plaque ablation. Forty-two atherosclerotic NZW rabbits were given intravenous β-carotene at a dose of 40 mg/kg, twice weekly and killed between 1 hour and 28 days after the initial injection. β-carotene was not detected in control specimens but was significantly greater in plaque than in normal wall at all time points following β-carotene injection (P < 0.04 Mann Whitney U test). The ablation threshold was significantly lower in β-carotene treated plaque than in untreated plaque or normal arterial wall (P < 0.01, Fisher's exact test). In this model β-carotene is preferentially taken up into arterial plaque, resulting in increased absorption of laser radiation at 480 nm and enhanced tissue ablation. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc. 相似文献
