Studies of the tissues of the human olfactory mucosa have been performed to investigate olfactory dysfunction and, more recently, olfactory mucosa has attracted a novel interest of investigators because it can be used as an early marker of neurodegenerative conditions of the brain and as a source of multipotent neural stem cells, with applications in regenerative medicine. The olfactory mucosa is readily available to the otolaryngologist, but the harvesting of this tissue must be safe, effective, and reliable, obtaining as little tissue as necessary, while avoiding unnecessary harm to the remaining olfactory tissue and function. The purpose of this review is to summarize the results of the most important studies and knowledge with regard to the human olfactory mucosa and its applications, emphasizing the issue of the distribution of the olfactory mucosa in the nasal cavities.  相似文献

Mosquitoes are the most important vectors of infectious diseases and their bites are related to several adverse skin reactions. Permethrin impregnated clothes are an efficient strategy against arthropods' bites; however, its topical efficacy as a repellent has not been well established. We studied the response to permethrin lotion 5 percent and N,N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide (DEET) spray 50 percent applied to the unprotected forearms of 10 volunteers. Each arm was exposed to 20 female mosquitoes of Aedes aegypti. We performed 71 bilateral comparative measurements evaluating the timing for the first bites. The average times for the arm without the product, with permethrin 5 percent, and with DEET 50 percent were: 7.9 seconds, 336.2 seconds and 7512.1 seconds. The results showed a significant difference between repellency times between either product and unprotected controls. In addition, there was a significant difference in time to first bite between permethrin and DEET treated arms (p<0.01). Permethrin affords some repellent activity against Aedes aegypti bites in this experimental setting. However, permethrin's profile of repellency was significantly inferior to that of DEET.  相似文献

Background Head lice constitute a problem in children. Each year, numerous cases of pediculosis occur worldwide. Little work has been performed to evaluate the understanding, opinions, and actions of populations regarding head lice. These areas are important as they enable clinicians and educators to alert parents on how to avoid treatments that are innocuous or of high risk to patients. Methods A cross‐sectional study was performed by interviewing the heads of households of 100 randomly chosen residences within the study area. Results The results obtained showed that 13% were infested during the first week of the survey, and 86% in the 24 weeks prior to the study. The number of positive cases increased with increasing resident number, and decreased in families with parents with a higher educational level. Itching was the principal clinical manifestation and caused sleep compromise in 65% of respondents. Innocuous and unhealthy practices to combat infestation, such as the use of inflammables and home insecticides, were common. Conclusion The results showed that certain beliefs generated worry and confusion in parents, who blamed head lice as the cause of various health problems which were not due to this insect.  相似文献

Background/objectivesTo characterise the prevalence and three-year progression of centre-involving diabetic macular oedema (CI-DMO) in minimal to moderate non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy, using optical coherence tomography (OCT) and measurements of retinal fluid using tissue optical reflectivity ratios (OCT-Leakage).Methods/methodsSeventy-four eyes from 74 patients were followed in a 3-year prospective longitudinal observational cohort of type 2 diabetes (T2D) patients using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT), OCT-Angiography (OCT-A) and OCT-Leakage (OCT-L). Eyes were examined four times with 1-year intervals. Sixteen eyes (17.8%) were excluded from the analysis due to quality control standards. Retinal oedema was measured by central retinal thickness and retinal fluid by using optical reflectivity ratios obtained with the OCT-L algorithm. Vessel density was measured by OCT-A. Thinning of the ganglion cell and inner plexiform layers (GCL + IPL) was examined to identify retinal neurodegenerative changes. Diabetic retinopathy ETDRS classification was performed using the seven-field ETDRS protocol.ResultsCI-DMO was identified in the first visit in 9% of eyes in ETDRS groups 10–20, 10% of eyes in ETDRS group 35 and 15% of eyes in ETDRS groups 43–47. The eyes with CI-DMO and subclinical CI-DMO showed a progressive increase in retinal extracellular fluid during the 3-year period of follow-up. The eyes with CI-DMO and increased retinal extracellular fluid accumulation were associated with vision loss.ConclusionsThe prevalence of subclinical CI-DMO and CI-DMO in the initial stages of NPDR occurs independently of severity grading of the retinopathy, showing progressive increase in retinal extracellular fluid and this increase is associated with vision loss (82% 9 out of 11 cases).Subject terms: Prognostic markers, Predictive markers  相似文献

ObjectiveTo design and implement group prenatal care (GPC) for Somali women and to evaluate participants’ satisfaction, knowledge, and care engagement.DesignQuality improvement project.Setting/Local ProblemA federally qualified health center in an urban Midwestern setting, which serves a largely East African immigrant and refugee population.ParticipantsPregnant Somali women at more than 20 weeks gestation receiving prenatal care at the project site. Many participants were non–English speaking.Intervention/MeasurementsWhile honoring the 13 essential elements of CenteringPregnancy, the model was adapted to the East African population at the project site and offered to all eligible women receiving individual prenatal care at the clinic. Women attended biweekly sessions, including individual assessment and education, exposure to integrative health therapies, and group discussion. Pre- and postintervention data were collected in surveys and in-depth interviews from March through August 2017.ResultsSeventeen Somali women attended a median of two sessions (range = 1–7). Self-reported results for knowledge of safe exercise in pregnancy (p = .02), exclusive breastfeeding (p = .04), what happens in the hospital (p = .02), and stress management (p = .03) increased after GPC participation. Ninety-three percent of women preferred GPC to individual care.ConclusionWhen adapted to meet the needs of Somali women, GPC has the potential to improve care satisfaction, increase knowledge, and reduce stress during pregnancy and the postpartum period. This model may interest women and care providers in similar community health care settings.  相似文献
