The crescent sign in childhood urography]

The crescent sign is a rare roentgenological symptom in excretory urography of infantile hydronephrosis. The orign is a presence of contrast material in the collecting renal tubule of the atrophic renal parenchyma. That is displaced at the renal circumference. The disappearance of the crescent sign represents the prognostic for the reparative potence of the renal parenchyma after the therapy of the obstructive uropathy in two own case.     

Full automation of 68Ga labelling of DOTA-peptides including cation exchange prepurification

Here we describe a fully automated approach for the synthesis of ⁶⁸Ga-labelled DOTA-peptides based on pre-concentration and purification of the generator eluate by using a cation exchange-cartridge and its comparison with fully automated direct labelling applying fractionated elution. Pre-concentration of the eluate on a cation exchange cartridge both using a resin-based and a disposable cation-exchange cartridge efficiently removed ⁶⁸Ge as well as major metal contaminations with Fe and Zn. This resulted in a high labelling efficiency of DOTA-peptides at high specific activity (SA) with short synthesis times.

Changes in plasma lipids and dietary intake accompanying shifts in perceived workload and stress

Plasma lipids, dietary intake, and self-reported stress and workload were assessed in 14 employees twice before major work deadlines (high workload), and once during a comparatively quiescent period of work (low workload). Increases in self-reported stress and workload between the high and low workload periods were significantly positively associated with increases in plasma total cholesterol, although lipid levels were not increased in the group as a whole during the high workload periods. Dietary intake of calories, total fat, and percentage of calories from fat were significantly higher during high workload during a period of high workload is associated with elevated total cholesterol and that dietary intake of foods which raise cholesterol levels is also increased. Further studies of larger groups of subjects may be required to show a frank increase in cholesterol with increased workload.     

Influence of Perchlorate on the Secretion of Non-Thyroxine Iodine by the Normal Human Thyroid Gland

Abstract. Several authors have postulated that endogenous iodide produced by the deiodination of iodotyrosines in the thyroid feeds into a different thyroidal iodide compartment than transported iodide which enters the gland from outside. One argument for the existence of two separate iodide compartments is the observation that under certain experimental conditions perchlorate completely discharges transported iodide from the thyroid, while it has no such effect on endogenous iodide. This latter observation however has not been confirmed by all studies and remained controversial. – We therefore reinvestigated the effect of perchlorate on the secretion of endogenous iodide by a new, sensitive method. Five normal volunteers received tracer amounts of iodide-¹²⁵I p.o. and 11 days later thyroxine-¹³¹I I.V. Two days later the following serial measurements were started: serum protein-bound labelled iodine (PB¹²⁵I, PB¹³¹), serum total thyroxine and urinary excretion of ¹²⁵I, ¹²⁷I and ¹³¹I. – In the control period the non-thyroxine iodine secretion calculated from the above measurements was 40 μg/day. Under perchlorate 200 mg three times daily this value rose significantly to 66 μg/day. Non-thyroxine iodine comprises the secreted triiodothyronine plus the secreted endogenous iodide. Assuming that the former value remained constant, our data show that perchlorate indeed discharges part, though not all, of the endogenous iodide. These data do not rule out a second iodide compartment, but they are also compatible with a simple one compartment model.
