Experimental study on relieving blood stasis of skin flaps using leeches

Isolated congested flaps in lower abdomen of rats were treated by application a method of sucking blood with medical leeches. The results were shown that survival rate of sucking blood group was 93.9%, non-sucking blood group was only 14.3% and small incision bleeding group in which incision was rinsed by Heparin-physiological saline was 25%. It has proved that this method has a very good effect on relieving blood stasis of tissue. We think that this method can be put to use clinically.

目的 探 讨极 外 型腰 椎间 盘 突出 症患 者 的临 床特 点 与神 经节 位 置的 相关 性 方 法:通过 术前 神 经根 造影 : 。确定 受压 神 经根 的背 根 神经 节的 位 置,根 据 其神 经节 的 位置 ,将 27 例极 外侧 腰 椎间 盘突 出 症患 者 分为 三 组 :椎管内 组,5 例;椎间 孔内 组 ,15 例 ;椎 间孔 外组 ,7 例 。分 别比 较神 经 节的 位置 与 临床 参数 ,如 受压 神 经根 的水 平 ,直腿 抬高 试 验的 度数 ,术 前和 术 后症 状(腿痛 ,下 腰痛 和 行走 能力 )及 体 征(感 觉 和运 动障 碍 )的 严重 程 度 及 与恢复率 之间 的 关系 。结 果:与椎 管 内和 椎间 孔 内组 相比 ,椎 间孔 外 组患 者直 腿 抬高 试验 的 度数 较低 ,下 腰 痛的 程度较轻 ,术 前的 腿痛 明 显重 ,而 行走 能 力低 于椎 管 内和 椎间 孔 组。 背根 神 经节 的位 置 与术 前的 感 觉和 运 动 障 碍以及手 术效 果 没有 明显 差 异。结论 :神 经节 的 位置 会影 响 极外 型腰 椎 间盘 突出 患 者根 性症 状 (腿痛 和 行走 能力 )的严重 程度 。     

Modulation of calcium-activated chloride current via pH-induced changes of calcium channel properties in cone photoreceptors.

The activity of calcium-activated chloride channels is controlled through the complex interaction of cellular mechanisms affecting calcium entry, buffering, and extrusion, and an unknown stoichiometric relation between intracellular Ca concentration and Cl channel activation. Here, we show that calcium-activated chloride current [ICl(Ca)] in cone photoreceptors is also highly sensitive to external pH, being strongly reduced by acidification and enhanced by alkylinization of the bathing medium. We propose that this modulation is accounted for by the pH sensitivity of Ca channel activation and permeation, already well characterized in other cells, which we now extend to cone photoreceptor Ca channels. Acidification of the external medium from a control pH of 7.4 shifts the Ca channel activation range positively by about 10 mV at pH 6.8, reducing the magnitude of calcium current with a consequent reduction of chloride current. Alkylinization shifts the Ca channel activation range negatively by about 8 mV at pH 8 and produces larger calcium currents during step depolarizations that in turn elicit larger chloride tail currents. Modulation of ICl(Ca) by pH suggests other consequences of the pH-induced shift in Ca channel gating, for one, modification of Ca-dependent transmitter release, which could be especially significant in photoreceptors where the cell's operating voltage range overlaps only the lower end of the Ca channel activation range.     

Prevention of arginine-vasopressin-induced motor disturbances by a potent vasopressor antagonist

The antivasopressor analog d(CH2)5Tyr(Me) arginine-vasopressin completely blocked the convulsive-like behavior and other severe motor disturbances which are normally observed following a second central arginine-vasopressin injection. This vasopressor antagonist appears to be selective for arginine-vasopressin-induced motor disturbances, in that the convulsive and motor effects of pentylenetetrazol and somatostatin were not altered significantly by pretreatment with the central antagonist. Results suggest that arginine-vasopressin-induced motor disturbances are mediated via central receptors. The classic antidiuretic (V2) type of arginine-vasopressin receptor does not appear to be involved, since the agonist 1-desamino-8-D-arginine-vasopressin did not elicit convulsive-like behavior or other severe motor disturbances 2 days following a first ('priming') injection of arginine-vasopressin.     

The dental management of patients with bipolar disorder

Bipolar disorder (manic depressive disease) affects 1% of the United States population. These persons suffer from prolonged episodes of extreme elation and depression. There is a significant incidence of dental pathosis and a need for dental care among these patients. The medications used for the treatment of this disease, their physiologic effects, and their interactions with the drugs used in dentistry are reviewed.
