The association of leukocyte adhesion defect type I and persistent hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemia of infancy in a Saudi Arabian family

The authors describe 2 female sibling infants diagnosed with leukocyte adhesion defects CD11 and CD18. Both had successful bone marrow transplants from identical siblings. One of the patients was found to have persistent hypoglycemia of infancy. The association of these two rare conditions has not been reported previously.     

Spectrophotometric determination of binary mixtures of pseudoephedrine with some histamine H1-receptor antagonists using derivative ratio spectrum method

A derivative spectrophotometric method is developed for the assay of three binary mixtures of pseudoephedrine with fexofenadine (mix I), cetirizine (mix II) and loratadine (mix III). The method is based on the use of the first derivative of the ratio spectrum. The ratio spectrum was obtained by dividing the absorption spectrum of the mixture by that of one of the components. The concentration of the other component was determined from its respective calibration graph treated similarly. Moreover, the influence of Deltalambda for obtaining the first derivative of the ratio spectra and the effect of the divisor concentration on the calibration graphs were studied. The described method was applied for the determination of these combinations in synthetic mixtures and dosage forms. The results obtained were accurate and precise.     

Triple trouble: the role of malnutrition in tuberculosis and human immunodeficiency virus co-infection

Worldwide, the number of individuals who are co-infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and tuberculosis is increasing greatly. The "triple trouble" of HIV and tuberculosis infection and malnutrition may put those infected at greater risk than those with any of the three conditions alone. Further investigation is needed to evaluate the prophylactic and therapeutic potential of nutritional interventions for co-infection with HIV and tuberculosis.     

Nociceptin inhibits cough in the guinea-pig by activation of ORL(1) receptors

We studied the central and peripheral antitussive effect of ORL(1) receptor activation with nociceptin/orphanin FQ in conscious guinea-pigs. In guinea-pig cough studies, nociceptin/orphanin FQ (10, 30, and 90 microg) given directly into the CNS by an intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) route inhibited cough elicited by capsaicin exposure by approximately 23, 29 and 52%, respectively. The antitussive activity of nociceptin/orphanin FQ (90 microg, i.c.v.) was blocked by the selective ORL(1) antagonist [Phe(1)gamma(CH(2)-NH)Gly(2)]nociceptin-(1-13)-NH(2) (180 microg, i.c.v.) and J113397 (10 mg kg(-1), i.p.) but not by the opioid antagonist, naltrexone (3 mg kg(-1), i.p.). Furthermore, intravenous (i.v.) nociceptin/orphanin FQ (1.0 and 3.0 mg kg(-1)) also inhibited cough approximately by 25 and 42%, respectively. These findings indicate that selective ORL(1) agonists display the potential to inhibit cough by both a central and peripheral mechanism, and potentially represent a novel therapeutic approach for the treatment of cough.
