Auditory brain stem evoked potentials (ABEPs) were recorded from 10 adults and 10 children who where neurologically and audiometrically normal. ABEPs were recorded in response to 75 dB HL clicks presented at rates of 10/sec and 50/sec. Normative values were calculated for amplitude and latency, as well as for inter-peak amplitude ratio and a variety of inter-peak latency differences and interaural differences at the two stimulus presentation rates. Normative values of the effect of increasing stimulus rate were calculated as well. Measures of changes in ABEPs between stimulus rates of 50/sec and 10/sec were the only derived measures that were significantly different between our adult and child normal populations. In addition, 50 patients with various conditions affecting the brain stem were examined. Increasing stimulus presentation rate had a significant effect on detection of abnormality in ABEPs from the patients examined. Measures of changes in ABEPs between stimulus rates of 50/sec and 10/sec seemed to be sensitive to a subset of abnormalities in our patient population. The case histories of the patients indicate that the subset may be impaired synaptic function. Measures of the effect of rate on ABEPs may complement the traditional measures that are primarily sensitive to white matter lesions.  相似文献

Ambiguity over the concepts of “parental capability” and “the child’s best interests” in the Israeli adoption law, and a lack of sufficient professional knowledge can lead to bias in the professional decision-making process regarding child adoption. This study investigates the idea that judges do not use only legal considerations and relevant information relating to the child-parent relationship but also social information about the biological parent whose parental capability is under legal consideration. The study makes use of the priming paradigm as a conceptual framework for understanding the possible effect of social information on legal judgments in child adoption cases. The textual narrative analysis of 130 court decisions in favor of compulsory adoption reveals the use in courts of three kinds of social information about biological parents: familial information, sexual information, and social-functional information. The study discusses the role of such information in establishing the judicial narrative of parental incapability. In order to “de-bias” the judicial decision-making process regarding child placement, a number of strategies for consideration as social policy are proposed.  相似文献

The effect of three treatment modalities of idiopathic-subjective tinnitus (IST): acupuncture (AP), biofeedback (BF) and Cinnarizine (Cin), was investigated in 58 randomly selected subjects. The findings show that at the end of treatment, 50% of the patients in the biofeedback group reported some amelioration in the level of the tinnitus, while 30% of the acupuncture group and only 10% of the group receiving Cinnarizine reported an amelioration of the tinnitus. Treatment by biofeedback caused a significant easing in the degree of discomfort caused by the tinnitus to patients during rest. Within the limitations of the sample study, our results indicate that the biofeedback method is more effective in comparison with acupuncture and Cinnarizine in the treatment of those suffering from tinnitus.  相似文献

Cells were treated in vitro with oligodeoxyribonucleotide phosphorothioates (ODNs) complementary to sites common to both wild-type and mutant p53 nucleotide sequences. Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) blasts from peripheral blood were exposed to four different p53 ODNs and showed anti-leukemic effects in suspension culture. This effect continued after removal of the ODN from the medium. Blocking of self-renewal of the leukemic blast stem cells in secondary plating of cells from cloning assays by two of the p53 ODNs was also observed. Control ODNs had no effect on leukemic blasts. Treatment of normal bone marrow cells with the four p53 ODNs did not influence their growth, nor was there any effect by the p53 ODNs on the leukemic cell-line, HL60, that does not express p53. These data suggest that p53 ODNs are selectively toxic to primary myelogenous blasts and may be therapeutically useful in AML.  相似文献

Fifteen Minor Head Trauma patients were investigated by Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potentials at 10/s and 55/s stimulus rate. The results were compared with those of the same patients at a second examination, two months later, as well as with a matched normal control group. Increasing the stimulus rate in MHT patients caused a significant but reversible delay in the central conduction time. No significant difference was found regarding the interpeak latency differences at a 10/s stimulus rate. The present study suggests that the primary lesion in MHT is ischaemic, affecting synaptic efficiency, and not axonal damage. These findings may be informative on the as yet obscure pathophysiological mechanism of minor head trauma.  相似文献

Serum prolactin levels were measured in maternal and fetal sera immediately post delivery in 20 cases of premature rupture of the membranes and in 20 controls. Fetal serum prolactin levels were 781 +/- 265 ng/ml in cases of PRM and 737 +/- 314 ng/ml in controls. Maternal serum prolactin levels were 504 +/- 264 ng/ml in cases of PRM and 731 +/- 361 ng/ml in controls. This difference is statistically significant (t = 1.81, p less than 0.05). A probable role of prolactin in maintaining fetal membrane integrity and the probable effect of the difference in maternal serum prolactin concentration in the two groups on the membranes' viscoelastic properties is discussed.  相似文献
