To determine the frequency of Enamel Development Defects (DDE) and associated factors in children and adolescents infected with HIV. A case‐control study was conducted in HIV‐infected patients (n = 52), aged 3 to 15, and a control group formed by preschool and schoolchildren (n = 104) matched according to gender, age and household income. Data on medical history, neonatal and maternal conditions were obtained. For diagnosis of enamel defects was used modified DDE Index. DDE frequency was 61.5% in the case group and 58.7% in the control group (p = 0.569). Infection of the genitourinary tract and maternal hemorrhage were factors associated with DDE in the case and control groups, respectively. An association was observed between the use of antiretroviral regimens with protease inhibitors or efavirenz and DDE in the permanent dentition. Children and adolescents HIV‐infected showed a DDE frequency similar to healthy patients, but factors associated with this condition were different between the groups.  相似文献

Purpose: To determine the clinical feasibility of a system based on augmented reality for upper-limb (UL) motor rehabilitation of stroke participants. Method: A physiotherapist instructed the participants to accomplish tasks in augmented reality environment, where they could see themselves and their surroundings, as in a mirror. Two case studies were conducted. Participants were evaluated pre- and post-intervention. The first study evaluated the UL motor function using Fugl-Meyer scale. Data were compared using non-parametric sign tests and effect size. The second study used the gain of motion range of shoulder flexion and abduction assessed by computerized biophotogrammetry. Results: At a significance level of 5%, Fugl-Meyer scores suggested a trend for greater UL motor improvement in the augmented reality group than in the other. Moreover, effect size value 0.86 suggested high practical significance for UL motor rehabilitation using the augmented reality system. Conclusion: System provided promising results for UL motor rehabilitation, since enhancements have been observed in the shoulder range of motion and speed.

We have previously shown that macrophages from interleukin (IL)-12p40 gene knockout (IL-12/IL-23-/-) mice have a bias towards the M2 activation profile, spontaneously secreting large quantities of transforming growth factor-beta1 (TGF-beta1) and producing low levels of nitric oxide (NO) in response to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma). To verify whether the activation profile of dendritic cells (DCs) is also influenced by the absence of IL-12/IL-23, bone marrow-derived DCs from IL-12/IL-23-/- and C57BL/6 mice were evaluated. At first we noticed that approximately 50% of the C57BL/6 DCs were dead after LPS-induced maturation, whereas the mortality of IL-12/IL-23-/- DCs was < 10%, a protective effect that diminished when recombinant IL-12 (rIL-12) was added during maturation. Similarly to macrophages, mature IL-12/IL-23-/- DCs (mDCs) produced higher levels of TGF-beta1 and lower levels of NO than C57BL/6 mDCs. NO release was IFN-gamma-dependent, as evidenced by the poor response of IFN-gamma-/- and IL-12/IL-23-/-IFN-gamma-/- mDCs. Nevertheless, IFN-gamma deficiency was not the sole reason for the weak NO response observed in the absence of IL-12/IL-23. The high level of TGF-beta1 secretion by IL-12/IL-23-/- mDCs could explain why exogenous IFN-gamma partially restored the NO production of IFN-gamma-/- mDCs, while IL-12/IL-23-/- IFN-gamma-/- mDCs remained unresponsive. We also showed that CD4+ T-cell proliferation was inhibited by C57BL/6 mDCs, but not by IL-12/IL-23-/- mDCs. IFN-gamma and NO appear to mediate this antiproliferative effect because this effect was not observed in the presence of mDCs from IFN-gamma-/- or IL-12/IL-23-/- IFN-gamma-/- mice and it was attenuated by aminoguanidine. We conclude that the presence of IL-12/IL-23 during LPS-induced maturation influences the activation profile of DCs by a mechanism that is, only in part, IFN-gamma dependent.  相似文献

A telemedicine network has been established in Brazil to support distance medical practice in paediatric oncology. ONCONET comprises a national network of universities, research institutes and medical institutions. The system is Web-based and hosted on a high-performance computing infrastructure based on clusters of computers. It is based on open-source software, designed to provide high performance, fault tolerance and high availability. The ONCONET began operation in 2004. Currently, 30 hospitals affiliated to the Brazilian Society for Paediatric Oncology are users of the ONCONET. Six hospitals are connected by broadband access through the National Education and Research Network and 24 by conventional Internet access. The Multimedia Patients Registry also became operational in 2004, and its database contains information on 3,200 patients from the 30 hospitals. The technological platform was notable for its low production cost. It thus appears to be a sustainable solution to the problem of delivering continuing medical education in a large country with widely dispersed health professionals.  相似文献

AIM: To evaluate the cytotoxic effects of two brands of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) (Pro-Root MTA and MTA Angelus) and Portland cement (PC) on the human ECV 304 endothelial cell line. METHODOLOGY: Endothelial ECV 304 cells were incubated at 37 degrees C in an atmosphere of 95% air, 5% carbon dioxide and 100% humidity for 7 days and grown in F12 medium supplemented with 10% fetal bovine serum with 50 microg mL(-1) of gentamicin sulphate. Effects of the materials on mitochondrial functions were measured by a colorimetric assay. At each experimental time interval (24, 48 and 72 h), a dimethyl-thiazol-diphenyl tetrazolium bromid assay was conducted to measure cell viability. All assays were repeated three times to ensure reproducibility. Results were expressed as average absorbance (A(570/nm)) +/- SD and the data were analysed statistically by one-way analysis of variance and the Bonferroni post-test. A P-value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: No statistically significant difference was shown between any of the experimental materials (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The two brands of MTA analysed, as well as the PC, initially showed a similar elevated cytotoxic effect that decreased gradually with time allowing the cell culture to become reestablished.  相似文献

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (RBD) is thought to result from a dysfunction of the brainstem structures that regulate physiologic REM sleep muscle atonia. Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) is a noninvasive method that allows detection of in vivo neuronal dysfunction in localized brain areas. The aim of our study was to investigate whether 1H-MRS can detect brainstem abnormalities in patients with idiopathic RBD. DESIGN: 1H-MRS centered on the midbrain and the pontine tegmentum was acquired in 15 patients with idiopathic RBD and 15 control subjects matched for age and sex. SETTING: University hospital sleep laboratory center. PARTICIPANTS: Fifteen untreated patients with chronic RBD diagnosed by history and video-polysomnography, normal neurologic examination, and normal cranial MRI. Fifteen healthy controls with no sleep complaints and normal polysomnography and brain MRI. INTERVENTIONS: N/A. MEASUREMENTS AND RESULTS: The metabolic peaks detectable with 1H-MRS, N-acetylaspartate (NAA), creatine-phosphocreatine (Cr), choline-containing compounds (Cho) and myoinositol (mI), and the ratios of NAA, Cho and ml to Cr were evaluated both in the midbrain and pontine tegmentum. No significant differences in N-acetylaspartate/creatine, choline/creatine and myoinosito/creatine ratios were found between patients and controls. CONCLUSIONS: The results do not suggest that marked mesopontine neuronal loss or 1H-MRS detectable metabolic disturbances occur in idiopathic RBD.  相似文献
