The role of fungal spores in thunderstorm asthma   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2

STUDY OBJECTIVES: To document the existence and investigate the etiology of "thunderstorm asthma," which has been reported sporadically over the past 20 years. DESIGN: We assessed the relationship between thunderstorms, air pollutants, aeroallergens, and asthma admissions to a children's hospital emergency department over a 6-year period. RESULTS: During thunderstorm days (n = 151 days) compared to days without thunderstorms (n = 919 days), daily asthma visits increased from 8.6 to 10 (p < 0.05), and air concentrations of fungal spores doubled (from 1,512 to 2,749/m(3)), with relatively smaller changes in pollens and air pollutants. Daily time-series analyses across the 6 years of observation, irrespective of the presence or absence of thunderstorms, demonstrated that an increase in total spores, equivalent to its seasonal mean, was associated with a 2.2% (0.9% SE) increase in asthma visits. CONCLUSIONS: Our results support a relationship between thunderstorms and asthma, and suggest that the mechanism may be through increases in spores that exacerbate asthma. Replication in other climates is suggested to determine whether these findings can be generalized to other aeroallergen mixes.  相似文献

Fifteen infants with life-threatening gastrointestinal anomalies received total parenteral feeding for periods ranging from 10 to 54 days; their ages ranged from one day to 5 months. The solutions were administered through peripheral veins. All patients gained weight during the period of observation and no cases of septicaemia were encountered.  相似文献

目的 通过凝血酶对成骨细胞的增殖及分化作用的研究来探讨受体介导的凝血酶的功能.方法 原代成骨细胞分别取自于蛋白酶激活受体(protease-activated receptor,PAR)-1敲除鼠和野生对照鼠的头颅骨.并利用凝血酶,人工合成的PAR-1或PAR-4特异性激活短肽对细胞进行处理,通过对5.溴-2-脱氧尿嘧啶的嵌入及细胞碱性磷酸酶活性的测定探讨PAR-1或PAR-4激活对细胞增殖和分化的影响.结果 在野生鼠成骨细胞,凝血酶及PAR-1激活肽均能促进的细胞增殖和降低碱性磷酸酶的活性,但PAR-4激活肽却无这些作用.然而在PAR-1 敲除鼠的成骨细胞无论是凝血酶还是PAR-4激活肽均不能改变细胞的增殖及碱性磷酸酶的活性.结论 本研究结果 表明凝血酶促进成骨细胞增殖及抑制其分化是通过PAR-1介导的.其他凝血酶受体并不具有此作用.  相似文献

Data obtained on 426 consecutive patients referred to a breast center by 122 physicians, including family practitioners, general surgeons, and other specialists, showed that the obstetricians-gynecologists referred the greatest average number of patients per physician, with more than 50% of these referrals for screening mammography. Internists referred fewer patients by nearly a factor of ten, with only one-third of these patients referred for screening mammography. Osteopenic changes in cancellous bone tissue of the first lumbar vertebral body were characterized in ovariectomized (OVX) rats as a function of time. Female Sprague Dawley rats (240 g body weight, 90 days old) were subjected to bilateral ovariectomy or sham surgery and sacrificed at various times from 0-540 days postovariectomy. The first lumbar vertebra was processed undecalcified for quantitative bone histomorphometry. Cancellous bone volume remained relatively constant in control rats at approximately 40% throughout the duration of the study. In contrast, cancellous bone volume was moderately decreased to 30-35% in OVX rats out to 180 days postovariectomy. Vertebral osteopenia became more pronounced in OVX rats at later times as cancellous bone volume declined to approximately 20% between 180 and 270 days and remained at that osteopenic level for the duration of the study. Osteoblast and osteoclast surface were highly elevated in OVX rats at 35 days, declined gradually toward control levels out to 180 days, then increased markedly at 270 days. Mineralizing surface and bone formation rate (tissue level, total surface referent) were maximally increased in OVX rats at 35-70 days before declining toward control levels at later times. However, these parameters remained significantly increased in OVX rats relative to control rats between 270 and 540 days. Mineral apposition rate was nearly identical in control and OVX rats at all time points and declined linearly with age in both groups. Our results indicate that osteopenia and increased bone turnover occur in the lumbar vertebral bodies of OVX rats, as had been previously observed in the proximal tibial metaphyses of these animals.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Retinal ganglion cells projecting to the accessory optic system in the rat   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The present data identify the distribution and morphological features of a homogeneous group of rat retinal ganglion cells. These cells were labelled after injection of either horseradish peroxidase or a fluorescent tracer, Fast Blue, into the medial terminal nucleus (MTN) of the accessory optic system. After retrograde fluorescent labelling, MTN-projecting retinal ganglion cells were intracellularly injected with Lucifer Yellow to reveal their complete dendritic morphology. There were on average 1,750 MTN-projecting cells fairly evenly distributed over the entire retinal ganglion cell layer. Their density ranged from 40-49 cells/mm2 in superior retina to 10-19 cells/mm2 towards the peripheral regions of both inferior and superior retina. The area of highest density formed a nasal-temporal band suggestive of a visual streak. Soma diameters ranged from 8.7 to 14.5 micron centrally and from 9.9 to 17.1 microns peripherally. Maximal dendritic field diameter ranged from 431 to 644 micron and averaged 516 micron with no obvious eccentricity dependence. The majority of MTN-projecting cells were bistratified. Dendrites stratified predominantly in the inner sublamina of the inner plexiform layer (IPL) with a varying number of branches from the remaining dendrites contained within the outer IPL, both strata presumably corresponding to the electrophysiologically determined on-off dichotomy. Cells projecting to the MTN were characterised by higher-order dendritic branching patterns that resulted in a dense dendritic tree with minor dendritic overlap. The slender dendrites had a beaded appearance and displayed spiny protrusions. The dendritic coverage of 5-6, stratification pattern, and overall morphological appearance of rat MTN-projecting cells renders them suitable candidates for on-direction--selective cells shown electrophysiologically to be linked with the MTN of the accessory optic system.  相似文献
