ObjectiveSerum lipoprotein is the most important predictor for microvascular diseases, and may be influenced by rapid urbanization. Currently available data are limited, particularly regarding age-specific lipoprotein status in urban Bangladeshi populations.MethodsBlood lipoprotein levels of 51,353 male and female individuals primarily residing in urban Bangladesh were analyzed. De-identified data (collected between January 2005 and December 2011) were extracted from the Clinical Biochemistry Laboratory Data Archive of International Centre for Diarrheal Disease Research, Bangladesh (icddr,b). For analyses, six age categories were created: (i) <20 years, n = 481; (ii) 20–29 years, n = 1602; (iii) 30–39 years, n = 7272; (iv) 40–49 years, n = 13,582; (v) 50–59 years, n = 15,890; and (vi) 60 years and more, n = 12,526.ResultsMean serum levels of TC, LDL, TG, LDL:HDL and TC:HDL were significantly higher among adults 30–39 years old compared to other age groups, regardless of sex. The proportion of high TC and LDL from 2005 to 2011 among individuals aged 30–39 years old varied widely (p < 0.01 for trend and all pairwise tests).Conclusion30–39 years old individuals had higher concentration of lipoprotein, which increases microvascular disease risk. Further population-based studies are needed to validate our observations in rural areas of Bangladesh. 相似文献

To assess maternal serum and cord blood apelin-36 and nesfatin-1 concentrations in pregnant women with and without gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Thirty pregnant women with GDM and 30 gestational age matched healthy pregnant subjects participated to the study. Maternal serum and cord blood nesfatin-1 and apelin-36 levels were measured with ELISA, at the time of birth. The relationships between maternal serum and cord blood nesfatin-1 and apelin-36 levels, anthropometric and metabolic parameters were also assessed. Maternal serum apelin-36 levels were found higher (13.5?±?8.3 vs. 9.6?±?5.9?ng/ml, P?=?0.001) and nesfatin-1 levels were found lower (5.5?±?8.1 vs. 8.1?±?23.9?ng/ml, P?=?0.001) in patients with GDM compared with control pregnant women. However, the cord blood apelin-36 levels (8.8?±?4.3 and 8.2?±?1.9?ng/ml, P?=?0.618) and nesfatin-1 levels (5.4?±?4.0 and 6.2?±?10.3?ng/ml, P?=?0.688) were similar in the GDM and control groups, respectively. Maternal serum apelin-36 and nesfatin-1 levels correlated positively with their respective cord blood levels. Maternal serum and cord blood apelin-36 levels correlated negatively with the gestational age and birth weight. Similarly maternal serum and cord blood nesfatin-1 levels correlated negatively with the gestational age, but there was no correlation with the birth weight. We did not find a correlation between maternal serum apelin-36 and nesfatin-1 levels, maternal age, BMI, fasting glucose, fasting insulin, and HOMA-IR. Also cord blood apelin-36 and nesfatin-1 levels did not correlate with the maternal age, BMI, HOMA-IR, cord blood glucose, and cord blood insulin levels. Neuroendocrine tumors, also known as carcinoid tumors, behave like benign tumors; however, they show the characteristics of carcinoma. While more than 80% of the neuroendocrine tumors found in the liver are metastatic, primary hepatic neuroendocrine tumors are very rare. Five patients with hepatic mass who admitted to our clinic between August 2003 and July 2007 were treated surgically. Ultrasonography, computerized tomography and magnetic resonance imaging were performed in all patients. Endoscopy and colonoscopy were conducted to exclude malignancy of other sites. Hepatectomy was carried out in all patients. Diagnosis was confirmed with immunohistochemical examination. The five patients treated surgically were diagnosed as primary hepatic neuroendocrine tumor histopathologically. Abdominal pain was the most common complaint of all patients. Hepatectomy was conducted in all patients due to tumors originating from the liver lobes. Only one patient (Case 2) underwent transarterial chemoembolization before hepatectomy to reduce tumor bleeding. Owing to tumor recurrence on the left lobe of the liver in Case 2, transarterial chemoembolization was performed four years after hepatectomy. R0 resection was achieved in two patients (Cases 1 and 3). In conclusion, primary hepatic neuroendocrine tumors are very rare and asymptomatic tumors. Thus, high-sensitive laboratory and imaging examinations are required. At present, hepatectomy remains the main treatment for primary hepatic neuroendocrine tumor. 相似文献

Background and objective: A disintegrin and metalloproteinase (ADAM) 33 is a susceptibility gene associated with inflammatory lung and skin diseases. It is selectively expressed in mesenchymal cells, and its metalloprotease activity has been linked to angiogenesis and tissue remodelling. A soluble form of ADAM33 (sADAM33) has been identified in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) of asthmatic patients, and its levels inversely correlate with lung function. Because of its association with inflammatory lung diseases, it was hypothesized that sADAM33 is elevated in BALF of patients with pulmonary sarcoidosis. Methods: After removal of Ig using Protein A/G and enrichment using Concanavalin A beads, sADAM33 was identified in BALF by Western blotting. A fluorescence resonance energy transfer peptide cleavage assay was used to assess ADAM33‐like activity in BALF. Results: sADAM33 protein in BALF was detected as a 25 kDa fragment, and levels were significantly increased in samples from sarcoid patients when compared to healthy controls (P < 0.05). Levels of sADAM33 were inversely correlated with lung function (FVC%) (P < 0.05) and DLCO % predicted (P < 0.01). No difference in sADAM33 enzymatic activity was observed between healthy and sarcoid BALF samples. Conclusions: Release of sADAM33 is increased in sarcoid and may be associated with abnormal lung function. sADAM33 may be a biomarker of lung tissue inflammation and remodelling in sarcoid. 相似文献
