PROGRAMME INTEGRATION TO SUPPORT DRUG INFORMATION AND DISSEMINATION

The world-wide Drug Information/Drug Experience/Publication Programme at Norwich Eaton Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NEPI) is coordinated and supported by the Information Services (IS) and Medical Surveillance and Communications (MSC) sections of R&D. To support the programme, IS maintains a database of published reports of drug reactions and MSC maintains a separate but compatible database of drug experiences reported by health care professionals, patients, and the field sales force, as well as in published reports. These databases are used to provide information to individuals both inside and outside the Company. All requests for information from authors, editors and publishers are coordinated through IS. Also, when factual errors about NEPI products are discovered, this section coordinates a response to the author and publisher. Requests for information from health care professionals are handled by MSC. The programme serves as a framework for systematic gathering, storage and dissemination of information. The programme also clearly identifies the departments responsible for responding to outside inquiries and makes possible expedient provision of consistent, accurate information to authors, editors, publishers and clinicians throughout the world.     

Studies on the role of tumor necrosis factor in adult respiratory distress syndrome.

Tumor necrosis factor (TNF), rapidly becoming recognized as a mediator of inflammation, may be important in the pathogenesis of acute lung injury. Its role in the development of the adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in humans, however, has been difficult to clarify. To determine if TNF could be important early in the development of acute lung injury from multiple causes, we enrolled 103 patients within 8 h of meeting the criteria for an at-risk illness (sepsis, aspiration of gastric contents, severe pancreatitis, hypertransfusion, abdominal trauma, chest trauma, multiple fractures) and obtained multiple frequent blood samples for TNF measurements. Using five methods of TNF analysis, we were unable to find an association between TNF and the development of ARDS. However, we found significant differences in TNF measurements depending on the methods of analysis used, which could, at least in part, account for the inconsistencies in the published literature regarding the relationship between TNF and disease processes.

3H-1,2-二氢-1-吡里酮衍生物的合成

发现3 H-1,2-二氢-1-吡咯里嗪酮具有明显的抗炎镇痛作用。用Friedel-Crafts酰化和Dieckmann缩合等反应制备了该酮的一些衍生物,其中五个未见于文献报道。药理实验证明,这些化合物均有不同程度的抗炎镇痛作用。     

The use of computerized tomography scanning to localize the impalpable testis

To determine the usefulness of computerized tomography scanning in the preoperative localization of the impalpable undescended testis 5 patients with 8 impalpable testes were studied. In 2 patients the scan correctly outlined 3 impalpable testes inside the internal inguinal ring, in 2 patients the scan correctly localized 4 impalpable testes at or just inside the external inguinal ring and in 1 patient the scan failed to demonstrate a testis, a finding corroborated at an operation. These results suggest that computerized tomography scanning appears to be an effective, simple and less hazardous method to localize impalpable undescended testes than other currently available techniques.
