Air kerma rate constants for radionuclides

Conversion to SI units requires that the exposure rate constant which was usually quoted in R·h^-1·mCi^-1· cm² be replaced by the air kerma rate constant with units m²·Gy·Bq^-1·s^-1. The conversion factor is derived and air kerma rate constants for 30 radionuclides used in nuclear medicine and brachytherapy are listed. A table for calculation of air kerma rates for other radionuclides is also given. To calculate absorbed dose to tissue, the air kerma rate has to be multiplied by approximately 1.1. A dose equivalent rate constant is thus listed which allows direct calculation of dose equivalent rate to soft tissue without resorting to exposure rate constants tabulated in the special units R·m²·mCi^-1·h^-1 which should no longer be used.     

Comparison of epicutaneous patch testing with synovial T-cell infiltration in patients with arthroplasty: an immunohistological examination to clarify allergic reactions to metallic implants at the synovial membrane

To find evidence of hypersensitivity reactions after arthroplasty as a possible cause for aseptic loosening, 35 patients were patch tested before surgery. To identify the cellular basis of a delayed-type hypersensitivity reaction, we histologically evaluated samples of synovial membranes from the hip or knee. For further evaluation of the cellular response, we tested for CD3, CD4, CD8, and NK cells. The samples were taken during revision of aseptic loosening, primary arthroplasty, or secondary arthroplasty at the contralateral joint. Only one patient in the revision group was patch tested positive for nickel. None of the patients with the aseptic loosening showed T-lymphocyte infiltration in the pseudosynovial membrane. In most cases, the other two groups showed an active osteoarthritis with a hyperplasia of the synovial membrane and T-cell infiltration with a follicular pattern. Our findings show that negative epicutaneously patch-tested patients show no evidence of a delayed-type hypersensitivity reaction at the pseudosynovial membrane after aseptic loosening. Furthermore, the patch-test-positive patient shows no evidence of a delayed-type hypersensitivity reaction at the synovial membrane.     

Fluorescenzmikroskopische Beobachtungen an der lebenden Rattenschilddrüse

Zusammenfassung Bei fluorescenzmikroskopischen Untersuchungen ließ sich die Gewebsstruktur der lebenden Schilddrüse von Ratten mit den Fluorochromen Acridinorange und dioxypyrendisulfosaurem Natrium differenziert darstellen. Im Fluorescenzbild waren in Nachbarschaft der Gefäßbannen rot leuchtende, granulierte Zellen zu beobachten, die histologisch und histochemisch als Mastzellen charakterisiert werden konnten. Die unter Hormongaben in Erscheinung tretenden histomorphologischen Veränderungen am Schilddrüsenparenchym und -kolloid wurden fortlaufend fluorescenzmikroskopisch verfolgt. Während der Aktivierung der Schilddrüse durch thyreotropes Hormon fand sich eine Abnahme der Bindungsfähigkeit des Kolloids für dioxypyrendisulfosaures Natrium sowie entsprechend den bisher an Hand histologischer Schnittpräparate geäußerten Vorstellungen eine Verbreiterung bzw. Erhöhung des Epithels. Mastzellen ließen sich bisher außer bei der Ratte nur noch in der Schilddrüse vom Fuchs nachweisen. An der Ratte war erne Beeinflussung von Form und Zahl dieser Zellen durch thyreotropes Hormon oder Methylthiouracil nicht festzustellen.Die Untersuchungen wurden mit Unterstützung der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft durchgeführt.Die fluorescenzmikroskopischen Untersuchungen wurden im Pathologischen Institut der Westf. Wilhelms-Universität zu Münster (damaliger Direktor: Prof. Dr. Dr. h. c. H.Siegmund ) ausgeführt.     

Gleichzeitige Darstellung von EsD,DIA, GLO und UDPGP in einem Stärkeblock

Zusammenfassung Es wird über die gleichzeitige Darstellung von 4 Enzymsystemen aus menschlichen Hoden berichtet. GLO- und Diaphorase-Typen waren sehr gut reproduzierbar. Das gilt prinzipiell auch für EsD; dabei sollte eine Inkubationszeit von 2–3 min nicht überschritten werden, weil sich die Untergrundfluoreszenz zunehmend intensiviert. Von der UDPGP wurden 2 differente Muster angezeigt; jedoch gelang ihr Nachweis nicht regelmäßig.     

Bacteremia during double-contrast barium enema examination

Forty-five patients undergoing double-contrast barium enema examinations were studied to identify the incidence of transient bacteremia associated with the examination. Blood cultures were obtained immediately prior to the examination and at 5, 10, and 20 minutes after the start of the examination. Blood samples were cultured in both aerobic and anaerobic media, and four of these cultures were positive for organisms that are common skin contaminants. No bacteremia was identified from enteric pathogens. The data herein suggest that patients with cardiac valvular disease are not at greater risk of bacteremia during double-contrast barium enema examinations.
