Aim of the study

Cocos nucifera cultivated in Brazil is known as “coco-da-Bahia” or “coqueiro-da-Índia”. The tea from the husk fiber is widely used to several inflammatory disorders. Crude extract and fractions obtained from Cocos nucifera “common variety” were evaluated to test the anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive activities.

Materials and methods

Crude extract (CE, 50, 100, and 150 mg/kg), fraction 1 (F1, molecular weight lesser than 1 kDa, 1, 10, and 50 mg/kg), fraction 2 (F2, molecular weight higher than 1 kDa, 1, 10, and 50 mg/kg), and the references drugs morphine (5 mg/kg), acetilsalicilic acid (200 mg/kg), prometazine (30 mg/kg), and metisergide (5 mg/kg) were evaluated on models of analgesia and inflammation.

Results

CE, F1, and F2 significantly develop peripheral and central antinociceptive activity but with less effect on supra-spinal regions of the brain. Administration of the opioid antagonist, naloxone (5 mg/kg) inhibited the antinociceptive effect indicating that Cocos nucifera crude extract and fractions may be acting in opioid receptors. CE and F1 also inhibited rat paw edema induced by histamine, and serotonin.

Conclusions

results demonstrated that Cocos nucifera and its fractions have antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory activities which confirm the popular use of this plant in several inflammatory disorders.  相似文献

Five different vegetable oils were used in the production of fresh cheese to increase the concentration of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), particularly α-linolenic acid (ALA), the most important omega-3 fatty acid of vegetable origin. Physico-chemical and microbiological characteristics of functionalized cheeses were evaluated after 1 and 3?days of ripening at 4?°C while the consumer appreciation was evaluated in the final product at 3?days of ripening. After 3?days, the cheeses with Camelina sativa and Echium plantagineum oils added exhibited the highest retention of PUFAs (mostly ALA) compared to those with flaxseed, raspberry and blackcurrant oils. The addition of oil showed little effects on physico-chemical characteristics and also consumers’ evaluation highlighted that all of the fresh cheeses were considered acceptable although those with flaxseed and raspberry oils were the most appreciated.  相似文献

To describe utilization of a biosimilar product containing filgrastim (Neutromax®), data of 414 myeloma or lymphoma patients subjected to autologous SCT between 1998 and 2007 were analyzed. Filgrastim was used for mobilization of progenitors (5 days at 300 μg/day) and for the recovery of neutropenia after transplantation (100 μg/day, since day +5). In 2003, the excipient mannitol was replaced by sorbitol. A mean dose of 9.47 × 106 CD34+ cells/kg was infused; 100 neutrophils/mm3 required 5-day treatment; 500 neutrophils/mm3, 6 days and 1000 neutrophils/mm3, 7 days. Neutromax® effect in SCT is similar to reports with other brands. No difference was found between formulations.  相似文献

Thanks to the advent of laparoscopic techniques, the last decade and a half have witnessed a radical change in the treatment of esophageal achalasia. Because of the high success rate of the laparoscopic Heller myotomy, surgery has now become in many centers the first modality of treatment for achalasia. This shift in the treatment algorithm reflects the fact that laparoscopic Heller myotomy with partial fundoplication outperforms nonsurgical approaches, such as balloon dilatation and intrasphincteric botulinum toxin injection.  相似文献

Sachet water has become an important primary source of drinking water in western Africa, but little is known about bacteriologic quality and improvements to quality control given the recent, rapid evolution of this industry. This report examines basic bacteriologic indicators for 60 sachet water samples from two very low-income communities in Accra, Ghana, and explores the relationship between local perceptions of brand quality and bacteriologic quality after controlling for characteristics of the vending environment. No fecal contamination was detected in any sample, and 82% of total heterotrophic bacteria counts were below the recommended limit for packaged water. Sachets from brands with a positive reputation for quality were 90% less likely to present any level of total heterotrophic bacteria after controlling for confounding factors. These results contrast with much of the recent sachet water quality literature and may indicate substantial progress in sachet water regulation and quality control.  相似文献

BackgroundAs antioxidant-rich plant foods, cereals can impede lipid and starch breakdown in the human body, are germane to diabetes management.ObjectiveWe aim to identify newer sources of phytochemicals and health-promoting constituents desirable antidiabetic and antioxidant properties.MethodsThree millet types i.e. fonio (Digitaria exilis), finger millet (Eleusine coracana), and pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum) available locally were investigated for antioxidant ability employing these assays i.e. DPPH, ABTS, H2O2, antidiabetic ability employing these assays i.e. α-amylase, α-glucosidase and inhibitory property on glycosylation formation. Preliminary characterization tools were employed i.e. UV-Visible spectroscopy (UV–visible) and Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) for the polyphenolic confirmation.ResultsThe absorbance intensity range 325–425 nm confirmed that polyphenolics are present in the three millet types; most of the biological results showed the activities are dose-dependent. Fonio millet extract revealed the highest activity against hemoglobin glycosylation (29.469 ± 0.399%) which compared favorably with the standard (acarbose) (29.354 ± 1.607%). Fonio millet extract also showed the best antioxidant activity (significantly higher% inhibition value = 47.909 ± 3.472) and the pearl millet revealed the least antioxidant activity (significantly lower% inhibition value = 44.910 ± 3.597) both at a concentration of 500 mg·ml?1, though all the millet extracts showed activity towards this assay better than the standard (19.883 ± 2.485%). Fonio millet extract displayed a significantly higher percentage inhibition of α-amylase and glucosidase (43.729 ± 0.410% and 55.835 ± 2.198%) than finger millet (39.002 ± 1.604%; 43.971 ± 5.849%) and pearl millet (33.223 ± 2.708%; 30.845 ± 2.841%), respectively.ConclusionThe polyphenolic extracts from these millet types have therapeutic potentials, which may play significant roles in type 2 diabetes prevention and management, and hence these millets, especially fonio and finger millet, have the potential to be utilized as functional foods.  相似文献

The new echocardiographic techniques for the study of physiopathological intramyocardial phenomena include video densitometry (VD), integrated backscatter (IBS), and color Doppler myocardial imaging (CDMI). Being more independent from cardiac load and from rotational and translational heart motion, these new sensible, noninvasive techniques such as CDMI and IBS show a real incremental value in comparison with conventional echocardiography and allow to detect subtle functional and textural abnormalities of intramural myocardium, partially undetectable by conventional two-dimensional Doppler echocardiography. Subclinical thyroid dysfunction (STD), both in its hypo- and hyperthyroidism form, has a relatively high prevalence in general population (9–15% with a lower percentage of adult males), hence it could be very useful to study more deeply heart involvement in these physiopathological conditions and understand the complex relationship between thyroid and heart. The use of these new ultrasonic techniques in subclinical hypothyroidism helps to detect the early simultaneous involvement of both cardiac cycle phases, which causes a decrease of intramyocardial contractility and an impairment of both active and passive phases of diastole. In subclinical hyperthyroidism, these new ultrasonic techniques permitted to discover more complex and different early cardiac abnormalities of both systolic and diastolic phases.  相似文献

PURPOSE: There is an unmet need for noninvasive markers to measure the biological effects of targeted agents, particularly those inhibiting the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) receptor (VEGFR) pathway, and identify patients most likely to benefit from treatment. In this study, we investigated potential blood-based biomarkers for SU11248 (sunitinib malate), a multitargeted tyrosine kinase inhibitor, in patients with metastatic imatinib-refractory gastrointestinal stromal tumors. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: Patients (n=73) enrolled in a phase I/II trial received SU11248 daily for 14 or 28 days followed by 14 days without treatment per cycle. Clinical benefit was defined as progression-free survival of >6 months. We assessed plasma markers, including VEGF and soluble VEGFR-2 (sVEGFR-2), and two cellular populations bearing VEGF receptors: monocytes and, in a subset of patients, mature circulating endothelial cells (CEC). RESULTS: Compared to patients with progressive disease, patients with clinical benefit had significantly greater increases in CECs (0.52 versus -0.01 CEC/microL/d, P=0.03) and smaller decreases in monocyte levels (47% versus 60%, P=0.007) during cycle 1. VEGF increased by 2.2-fold and sVEGFR-2 decreased 25% during the first 2 weeks of treatment. Neither plasma marker correlated with clinical outcome although a modest inverse correlation was observed between sVEGFR-2 changes and plasma drug levels. Monocytes, VEGF, and sVEGFR-2 all rebounded towards baseline off treatment. CONCLUSIONS: Monocytes, VEGF, and sVEGFR-2 were consistently modulated by treatment, suggesting that they may serve as pharmacodynamic markers for SU11248. Changes in CECs and monocytes, but not the plasma markers, differed between the patients with clinical benefit and those with progressive disease. These end points merit further investigation in future trials to determine their utility as markers of SU11248 activity and clinical benefit in gastrointestinal stromal tumors and other tumor types.  相似文献
