Background:
The most common reason of respiratory distress in the newborn is transient tachypnea of the newborn (TTN). There are some reports saying that TTN is associated with increased frequencies of wheezing attacks.Objectives:
The aims of this study were to determine the risk factors associated with TTN and to determine the association between TTN and the development of wheezing syndromes in early life.Materials and Methods:
In a historical cohort study, we recorded the characteristics of 70 infants born at the Shohadaye Kargar Hospital in Yazd between March 2005 and March 2009 and who were hospitalized because of TTN in the neonatal intensive-care unit. We called their parents at least four years after the infants were discharged from the hospital and asked about any wheezing attacks. Seventy other infants with no health problems during the newborn period were included in the study as the control group.Results:
The rate of wheezing attacks in newborns with TTN was more than patients with no TTN diagnosis (P = 0.014). TTN was found to be an independent risk factor for later wheezing attacks (relative risk [RR] = 2.8).Conclusions:
The most obvious finding of this study was that TTN was an independent risk factor for wheezing attacks. So long-term medical care is suggested for these patients who may be at risk, because TTN may not be as transient as has been previously thought. 相似文献12.

Objective: Data on the effects of coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) supplementation on glucose metabolism, lipid profiles, inflammation, and oxidative stress in subjects with diabetic nephropathy (DN) are scarce. This research was done to determine the effects of CoQ10 supplementation on metabolic status in subjects with DN.Methods: This randomized double-blind placebo-controlled clinical trial was done in 50 subjects with DN. Participants were randomly assigned into two groups to intake either 100 mg/day CoQ10 supplements (n = 25) or placebo (n = 25) for 12 weeks. Fasting blood samples were obtained at first and after 12-week intervention to quantify metabolic profiles.Results: After 12 weeks of treatment, compared with the placebo, CoQ10 supplementation resulted in significant decreases in serum insulin levels (?3.4 ± 6.8 vs +0.8 ± 6.4 µIU/mL, p = 0.02), homeostasis model of assessment-estimated insulin resistance (?1.0 ± 2.0 vs +0.2 ± 1.8, p = 0.03), homeostasis model of assessment-estimated B cell function (?12.3 ± 26.3 vs +3.5 ± 23.1, p = 0.02) and HbA1c (?1.1 ± 1.0 vs ?0.1 ± 0.2%, p < 0.001), and a significant improvement in quantitative insulin sensitivity check index (+0.009 ± 0.01 vs ?0.006 ± 0.01, p = 0.01). In addition, CoQ10 supplementation significantly decreased plasma malondialdehyde (MDA) (?0.6 ± 0.5 vs +0.5 ± 1.0 µmol/L, p < 0.001) and advanced glycation end products levels (AGEs) (?316.4 ± 380.9 vs +318.6 ± 732.0 AU, p < 0.001) compared with the placebo. Supplementation with CoQ10had no significant impacts on fasting plasma glucose (FPG), lipid profiles, and matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) compared with the placebo.Conclusions: Taken together, our study demonstrated that CoQ10 supplementation for 12 weeks among DN patients had favorable effects on glucose metabolism, MDA, and AGEs levels, but unchanged FPG, lipid profiles, and MMP-2 concentrations. 相似文献

Oxidative stress-induced apoptosis in spermatozoa may lead to male infertility. Environmental pollutants and heavy metals such as cadmium cause harmful effects on the reproductive system and sperm parameters through the induction of oxidative stress. Silymarin, as a potent antioxidant, is able to inhibit oxidative stress. This study was performed to investigate the protective effects of silymarin on cadmium-induced toxicity in human spermatozoa. Sperm samples were divided into the following five groups: (a) spermatozoa at 0 min, (b) spermatozoa in the control group, (c) spermatozoa treated with cadmium chloride (20 μM), (d) spermatozoa treated with silymarin (2 μM)+ cadmium chloride (20 μM) and (e) spermatozoa treated with silymarin (2 μM). Sperm parameters related to apoptosis, such as DNA fragmentation, nucleus diameter, mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) and expression of caspase-3, were evaluated in all groups. After 180 min, spermatozoa treated with cadmium chloride showed a significant decrease in nucleus diameter and MMP but a significant increase in DNA fragmentation; however, caspase-3 expression remained unchanged. At this time point, silymarin in the silymarin + cadmium chloride group could significantly reverse the adverse effects of cadmium chloride on these parameters.Silymarn could partly compensate for the caspase-independent apoptosis in the spermatozoa. Background
The biotransformation of steroids by fungal biocatalysts has been recognized for many years. There are numerous fungi of the genus Aspergillus which have been shown to transform different steroid substances. The possibility of using filamentous fungi Aspergillus brasiliensis cells in the biotransformation of androsta-1,4-diene-3,17-dione, was evaluated.Methods
The fungal strain was inoculated into the transformation medium which supplemented with androstadienedione as a substrate and fermentation continued for 5 days. The metabolites were extracted and isolated by thin layer chromatography. The structures of these metabolites were elucidated using 1H-NMR, broadband decoupled 13C-NMR, EI Mass and IR spectroscopies.Results
The fermentation yielded one reduced product: 17β-hydroxyandrost-1,4-dien-3-one and two hydroxylated metabolites: 11α-hydroxyandrost-1,4-diene-3,17-dione and 12β-hydroxyandrost-1,4-diene-3,17-dione.Conclusions
The results obtained in this study show that A. brasiliendsis could be considered as a biocatalyst for producing important derivatives from androstadienedione. 相似文献16.

Erbium:yttrium–aluminum–garnet (Er:YAG) laser treatment is an effective option for the removal of bacterial plaques. Many studies have shown that Er:YAG lasers cannot re-establish the biocompatibility of titanium surfaces. The aim of this study was to evaluate the responses of the human osteoblast-like cell line, SaOs-2, to sand-blasted and acid-etched (SLA) titanium surface irradiation using different energy settings of an Er:YAG laser by examining cell viability and morphology. Forty SLA titanium disks were irradiated with an Er:YAG laser at a pulse energy of either 60 or 100 mJ with a pulse frequency of 10 Hz under water irrigation and placed in a 24-well plate. Human osteoblast-like SaOs-2 cells were seeded onto the disks in culture media. Cells were then kept in an incubator with 5 % carbon dioxide at 37 °C. Each experimental group was divided into two smaller groups to evaluate cell morphology by scanning electron microscope and cell viability using 3-4,5-dimethylthiazol 2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide test. In both the 60 and the 100 mJ experimental groups, spreading morphologies, with numerous cytoplasmic extensions, were observed prominently. Similarly, a majority of cells in the control group exhibited spreading morphologies with abundant cytoplasmic extensions. There were no significant differences among the laser and control groups. The highest cell viability rate was observed in the 100 mJ laser group. No significant differences were observed between the cell viability rates of the two experimental groups (p?=?1.00). In contrast, the control group was characterized by a significantly lower cell viability rate (p?<?0.001). Treatments with an Er:YAG laser at a pulse energy of either 60 or 100 mJ do not reduce the biocompatibility of SLA titanium surfaces. Purpose: Antimicrobial activities of meropenem products on Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates were determined. Methods: 212 non-duplicated Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates were examined for in vitro meropenem susceptibility test by using the following disks, which were made from Meronem (AstraZeneca, UK), Exipenem (Exir, Iran) and Meroxan (DAANA, Iran) powders. MIC50 and MIC90 for meropenem antibiotics were determined.Results: Meronem had good activities against most isolates of Klebsiella pneumoniae, and only a few strains had a rather high MIC. Exipenem and Meroxan showed a similar activity with Meronem. Conclusion: Regarding the comparison of two internal generic meropenem products with the external Meronem product have shown that they are equivalents in terms of microbiological activity, as measured using the disk diffusion and MIC. In developing countries, we suggested preparing disks with antibiotic powders that can be an equivalent function in microbiological activity with standard disks. In addition, since it demonstrated significant antimicrobial activity against the Klebsiella pneumoniae. For use of Exipenem and Meroxan in vivo, it would be better to perform additional testing (activity against different species, stability etc.). 相似文献

Intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) is one of the most severe and life-threatening manifestations occurring in the patients with factor XIII (F XIII) deficiency. The aim of this study was to describe the ICH pattern in the patients suffering from F XIII deficiency. In this case series, we investigated 38 patients with severe F XIII deficiency in south of Iran from January to May 2012. ICH pattern, neurologic complications, efficacy of treatment, and incidence of recurrence were reported. The site of ICH was intraparenchymal in 35 patients (92.1 %), subdural in 2 patients (5.2 %), and epidural hemorrhage in 1 patient (2.6 %). Besides, neurologic complications occurred in 21 patients (55.2 %), including locomotor disability in 8, psychological impairment in 7, mental disorders in 5, speech impairment in 4, and visual impairment in 2. Prophylaxis was started with a dose of 10 IU/kg Fibrogammin every 4–6 weeks for all the patients, except for one. All the patients on prophylaxis showed good response without any episodes of recurrence, except for one. The most frequent site of ICH in our patients was intraparenchymal. It seems that long-term prophylactic treatment with a dose of 10 IU/kg Fibrogammin could be effective in the prevention of CNS bleeding in the patients with F XIII deficiency. Moreover, all the patients with severe F XIII deficiency even without severe bleeding symptoms are recommended to undergo prophylactic treatment. 相似文献
