Visual motion aftereffects can occur contingent on arbitrary sounds. Two circles, placed side by side, were alternately presented, and the onsets were accompanied by tone bursts of high and low frequencies, respectively. After a few minutes of exposure to the visual apparent motion with the tones, a circle blinking at a fixed location was perceived as a lateral motion in the same direction as the previously exposed apparent motion (Teramoto et al. in PLoS One 5:e12255, 2010). In the present study, we attempted to reverse this contingency (pitch aftereffects contingent on visual information). Results showed that after prolonged exposure to the audio-visual stimuli, the apparent visual motion systematically affected the perceived pitch of the auditory stimuli. When the leftward apparent visual motion was paired with the high–low-frequency sequence during the adaptation phase, a test tone sequence was more frequently perceived as a high–low-pitch sequence when the leftward apparent visual motion was presented and vice versa. Furthermore, the effect was specific for the exposed visual field and did not transfer to the other side, thus ruling out an explanation in terms of simple response bias. These results suggest that new audiovisual associations can be established within a short time, and visual information processing and auditory processing can mutually influence each other. 相似文献
This study aimed to examine the performance of deep learning object detection technology for detecting and identifying maxillary cyst-like lesions on panoramic radiography.
Methods
Altogether, 412 patients with maxillary cyst-like lesions (including several benign tumors) were enrolled. All panoramic radiographs were arbitrarily assigned to the training, testing 1, and testing 2 datasets of the study. The deep learning process of the training images and labels was performed for 1000 epochs using the DetectNet neural network. The testing 1 and testing 2 images were applied to the created learning model, and the detection performance was evaluated. For lesions that could be detected, the classification performance (sensitivity) for identifying radicular cysts or other lesions were examined.
Results
The recall, precision, and F-1 score for detecting maxillary cysts were 74.6%/77.1%, 89.8%/90.0%, and 81.5%/83.1% for the testing 1/testing 2 datasets, respectively. The recall was higher in the anterior regions and for radicular cysts. The sensitivity was higher for identifying radicular cysts than for other lesions.
Conclusions
Using deep learning object detection technology, maxillary cyst-like lesions could be detected in approximately 75–77%.
PurposeIn epilepsy with continuous spikes and waves during slow sleep (CSWS), which is a representative epileptic syndrome of secondary bilateral synchrony (SBS), the urgent suppression of this electroencephalographic (EEG) abnormality may be necessary to prevent the progression of neuropsychological impairments. The purpose of this study was to determine the efficacy of levetiracetam (LEV) on SBS, seizure frequency, and neuropsychological impairments in children with refractory epilepsy.MethodsEleven (seven male and four female) patients with refractory epilepsy with SBS on EEG, aged between 4.7 years and 11.3 years, were included in this study. After a 3-month baseline period, the patients were given LEV at an initial dose of 10 mg/kg/day for the first week, followed at increments of 5 mg/kg/day every week, up to 20 mg/kg/day. The LEV dose was then adjusted up to a maximum of 60 mg/kg/day, according to the clinician's judgment. EEG recordings and clinical evaluations were performed every 3 months, focusing on SBS. The occurrence of SBS was then scored, and the relationship between the score and the response to LEV treatment was evaluated. In comparison with the baseline SBS frequency, the EEG response to LEV treatment was classified, and responders were identified as having a ≥50% reduction in SBS frequency. In addition, in comparison with the baseline seizure frequency, response to LEV treatment was classified. Responders were identified as patients with complete cessation (100% seizure control) and a response of ≥50% reduction in seizures. Furthermore, neuropsychological impairments such as hyperactivity, impulsiveness, and inattention were evaluated before and after LEV treatment.ResultsEight patients (72.7%) were considered responders. In addition, all eight patients were also considered responders for clinical seizures. Furthermore, 7 of 8 (87.5%) patients with response showed decreased hyperactivity and impulsivity after LEV administration.ConclusionsThe present data clearly indicate the usefulness of LEV in reducing both SBS on EEG and seizure frequency. Background and Aim: Crohn's disease (CD) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) of unknown etiology. We aimed to identify the etiological agent of CD using a molecular cloning strategy that was particularly focused on identifying agents causing immune abnormalities and infectious agents. Methods: We constructed a cDNA library derived from the inflamed intestinal tissue of a CD patient, and screened 1.5 million clones in this library with the serum from another typical CD patient. The expressed cDNA clones that positively reacted with the serum were then expressed as fusion proteins with glutathione S‐transferase, and western blotting was performed using the sera of 22 CD, 13 ulcerative colitis (UC), and 16 non‐IBD patients. Results: We identified nine positive clones that did not contain any viral or bacterial genomic DNA. Of these, we selected one clone (clone 50) with which the typical CD patient's serum most strongly reacted. Clone 50 is highly homologous to the antioxidant protein peroxiredoxin 6. In western blotting, the sera of 47.6% CD patients (small intestine type 80%, large and small intestine type 43%, large intestine type 0%) showed strong reactivity to clone 50, none of the UC patients were reactive to clone 50, and 18.8% of non‐IBD patients were very weakly reactive to it. We also found that the expression of peroxiredoxin 6 was significantly increased in inflamed intestinal epithelia of CD. Conclusion: The present study first showed that some CD patients have an antibody against peroxiredoxin 6‐like protein, which may be involved in the pathogenesis of CD. 相似文献
