The transition from adolescence to adulthood is a critical period for the development of healthy behaviors. Yet, it is often characterized by unhealthy food choices. Considering the current pandemic scenario, it is also essential to assess the effects of coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) on lifestyles and diet, especially among young people. However, the assessment of dietary habits and their determinants is a complex issue that requires innovative approaches and tools, such as those based on the ecological momentary assessment (EMA). Here, we describe the first phases of the “HEALTHY-UNICT” project, which aimed to develop and validate a web-app for the EMA of dietary data among students from the University of Catania, Italy. The pilot study included 138 students (mean age 24 years, SD = 4.2; 75.4% women), who used the web-app for a week before filling out a food frequency questionnaire with validation purposes. Dietary data obtained through the two tools showed moderate correlations, with the lowest value for butter and margarine and the highest for pizza (Spearman’s correlation coefficients of 0.202 and 0.699, respectively). According to the cross-classification analysis, the percentage of students classified into the same quartile ranged from 36.9% for vegetable oil to 58.1% for pizza. In line with these findings, the weighted-kappa values ranged from 0.15 for vegetable oil to 0.67 for pizza, and most food categories showed values above 0.4. This web-app showed good usability among students, assessed through a 19-item usability scale. Moreover, the web-app also had the potential to evaluate the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on students’ behaviors and emotions, showing a moderate impact on sedentary activities, level of stress, and depression. These findings, although interesting, might be confirmed by the next phases of the HEALTHY-UNICT project, which aims to characterize lifestyles, dietary habits, and their relationship with anthropometric measures and emotions in a larger sample of students. 相似文献

Plasters and mortars of the Church of the Annunciation (Tortorici, Sicily) were characterized, for the first time, both at the elemental and molecular levels, by means of portable X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and Raman spectroscopy, to achieve information on the “state of health” of the whole structure. The understanding of their degradation mechanisms and the identification of consequent degradation patterns can define the environmental factors responsible for interpreting the potential pathological forms that can impact the general building vulnerability. In this sense, the results obtained in this article provide relevant information to identify and address both the characterization of building materials and the fundamental causes of their deterioration. At the same time, if coupled with the attempt to supply a chronological order of the major restoration interventions carried out on the investigated site, they provide new insights to calibrate the models for building vulnerability studies. 相似文献

Mechanisms of exercise-induced muscle injury with etiopathogenesis and its consequences have been described; however, the impact of different intensities of exercise on the mechanisms of muscular injury development is not well understood. The aim of this study was to exploit the relationship between platelet activation, oxidative stress and muscular injuries induced by physical exercise in elite football players compared to amateur athletes. Oxidant/antioxidant status, platelet activation and markers of muscle damage were evaluated in 23 elite football players and 23 amateur athletes. Compared to amateurs, elite football players showed lower antioxidant capacity and higher oxidative stress paralleled by increased platelet activation and muscle damage markers. Simple linear regression analysis showed that sNOX2-dp and H2O2, sCD40L and PDGF-bb were associated with a significant increase in muscle damage biomarkers. In vitro studies also showed that plasma obtained from elite athletes increased oxidative stress and muscle damage in human skeletal muscle myoblasts cell line compared to amateurs’ plasma, an effect blunted by the NOX2 inhibitor or by the cell treatment with cocoa-derived polyphenols. These results indicate that platelet activation increased muscular injuries induced by oxidative stress. Moreover, NOX2 inhibition and polyphenol extracts treatment positively modulates redox status and reduce exercise-induced muscular injury. 相似文献

Connective tissue growth factor (CTGF), which is regulated by transforming growth factor-ß (TGFß), has recently been implicated in the pathogenesis of fibrotic diseases and tumor stroma. Inasmuch as generation of desmoplastic tissue is characteristic for pancreatic cancer, it is not known whether it gives pancreatic cancer cells a growth advantage or is a reaction of the body to inhibit cancer cell progression. In the present study we analyzed the expression and localization of CTGF and evaluated whether it influences the prognosis of pancreas cancer. Tissue samples were obtained from 25 individuals (6 women, 19 men) undergoing pancreatic resection for pancreatic cancer. Tissue samples from 13 previously healthy organ donors (5 women, 8 men) served as controls. Expression of CTGF was studied by Northern blot analysis. In situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry localized the respective mRNA moieties and proteins in the tissue samples. Northern blot analysis revealed that pancreatic cancer tissue samples exhibited a 46-fold increase in CTGF mRNA expression (p < 0.001) over that of normal controls. In vitro studies confirmed that pancreatic stellate cells are the major source of CTGF mRNA expression and revealed a large variance in basal and TGFß-induced CTGF expression in cultured pancreatic cancer cells. This could also be confirmed by in situ hybridization, indicating that CTGF mRNA signals were located principally in fibroblasts, with only weak signals in the cancer cells. High CTGF mRNA levels in the tissue samples correlated with better tumor differentiation (p < 0.03). In addition, patients whose tumors exhibited high CTGF mRNA levels (> onefold increase above normal controls) lived significantly longer than those whose tumors expressed low CTGF mRNA levels (none to onefold) (p < 0.04 multivariate analysis). Our present data indicate that CTGF, as a downstream mediator of TGFß, is overexpressed in connective tissue cells and to a lesser extent in pancreatic cancer cells. Because patients with high CTGF mRNA expression levels have a better prognosis, our findings indicate that the desmoplastic reaction provides a growth disadvantage for pancreatic cancer cells. 相似文献

OBJECTIVES: We analyzed our experience with the laparoscopic approach for treating benign gastric lesions. METHODS: Between June 1998 and June 2002, we performed 18 gastric resections with the laparoscopic approach for 7 pyloric stenoses, 8 recurrent duodenal ulcers, and 3 chronic gastric ulcers. RESULTS: In our series, we performed Billroth II laparoscopic distal gastrectomy with no morbidity and mortality. IntroductionImplantation of a penile prosthesis in severely scarred corporal bodies represents a great challenge as fibrosis can compromise dilatation and subsequent closure of the corpora cavernosa and limit size, type, and function of the device.AimThe aim of this study is to report our experience of simultaneous corporeal reconstruction and penile prosthesis implantation in patients with severe penile contracture consequence of diffuse fibrosis.MethodsBetween March 2006 and February 2010, 18 patients with severe penile contracture and coporeal fibrosis underwent simultaneous corporeal reconstruction and placement of a penile prosthesis.Main Outcome MeasuresSurgical outcome and complications have been recorded during postoperative follow‐up. Patients' satisfaction has been assessed 6 months postoperatively with the administration of the modified Erectile Dysfunction Index of Treatment Satisfaction questionnaire.ResultsAlthough the dilatation of the corpora was extremely difficult due to the severe fibrosis, a penile prosthesis has been implanted in all patients. A malleable penile prosthesis has been inserted in four patients and a three‐piece inflatable device in the remainder. After an average follow‐up of 26 months (range 6–36), revision surgery was required in four patients (elective exchange to three‐piece inflatable device in three patients and upsizing of the implant in one patient). Although all patients were able to achieve penetrative sexual intercourse, four patients were partially dissatisfied because of significant penile shortening.ConclusionIn expert hands, simultaneous penile prosthesis implantation and corporal reconstruction of severely scarred corpora yield satisfactory results. Patients must be warned that complication rate in presence of severe fibrosis is significantly higher than in virgin cases and that downsized cylinders might be required due to the contracture of the tunica albuginea.
