Objects We evaluated whether the presence of lacunar skull deformity (LSD) with myelomeningocele is a predictive factor for subsequent
hydrocephalus development.
Materials and methods We reviewed the clinical and radiological records of 18 infants with myelomeningocele, divided the patients into groups with
(group A, n=9) and without (group B, n=9) ventriculomegaly at birth and assessed whether the presence of LSD was predictive of the necessity for ventriculoperitoneal
shunt (VPS) placement.
Results LSD was present in five group A patients. All nine group A patients underwent VPS placement. Among the group B patients, five
had LSD; they underwent VPS placement. A significantly higher proportion of those with ventricle enlargement or LSD at birth
required VPS placement (p=0.0001).
Conclusion Adding to the ventriculomegaly at birth, the presence of LSD alerts to the necessity to monitor these infants closely to determine

PURPOSE: We assessed the feasibility of utilizing three-dimensional (3D) phase sensitive inversion recovery (IR) images for preoperatively determining deep brain stimulator position. METHODS: We measured geometric distortion with a grid phantom and evaluated images of 3 volunteers to determine optimum imaging parameters for 3D phase sensitive IR. RESULTS: Geometric distortion measured less than 1.0%. Respective inversion and recovery times, which provided high T(1) contrast between the subthalamic nucleus and adjacent tissue, were 200 and 4000 ms. In studies of 3 volunteers and 2 patients, the subthalamic nucleus was clearly depicted in 3D phase sensitive IR images. The measured coordinates of the subthalamic nucleus agreed well with those calculated by conventional estimation from midpoint of the anterior and posterior commissure. CONCLUSION: Three-dimensional phase sensitive inversion recovery was useful in visualizing the subthalamic nucleus for effective deep brain stimulation. 相似文献

In 19 human meningiomas (14 primary and four recurrent tumors and one tumor transplanted into athymic nude mice), oncogene expression, amplification, and rearrangement, and loss of heterozygosity on chromosome 22 were examined. Compared to nontumor brain tissue, there was greater than a fivefold expression of the sis oncogene in six (40%) of 15 tumors studied and of the c-myc oncogene in 12 (63%) of the total 19 tumors. Expression of the sis gene was lower in the recurrent tumors than in the primary cases, and there was no detectable expression in anaplastic meningioma cells. Rearrangement of the sis gene was found in one meningioma. Loss of heterozygosity on chromosome 22 was detected in two of the five informative heterozygous cases. Expression of the c-myc gene was higher in cases with a loss of heterozygosity than in those without. These results suggest that the sis and c-myc oncogenes are associated with tumorigenicity and that c-myc may induce meningiomas through loss of the putative tumor suppressor gene. 相似文献

An ultrastructural study was undertaken concerning morphological changes within the autografted patellar tendon (PT) after
being transplanted to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in mongrel dogs. After 4 weeks, the arrangements of both large
and small collagen fibrils in the PT graft became disordered, and the number of inflammatory cells increased. However, the
same PT grafts revealed postsurgical signs of newly-produced collagen fibrils around activated fibroblasts at 12 to 24 weeks.
At 52 weeks after the transplantation, small collagen fibrils increased in both number and density, showing a remarkable morphological
similarity to the collagen fibrils of normal ACL. These data indicate that the characteristics of the PT graft eventually
resemble those of a normal ACL.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the number of polio survivors living in Kitakyushu, Japan, and the prevalence of post-polio syndrome. DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey in Kitakyushu. SUBJECTS/PATIENTS: A total of 342 possible polio survivors were selected from the list of physically disabled persons' certificates administered by the Department of Health and Welfare, Kitakyushu City Government. METHODS: A self-administered questionnaire concerning the diagnosis, paralysis, limitation in daily living, and use of adaptive devices was mailed to the 342 possible polio survivors. RESULTS: By confirmation of the diagnosis, 241 of the 342 turned out to be polio survivors, and the number of polio survivors per population of 100,000 amounted to 24.1. Of the polio survivors, 85% complained of new health problems such as difficulty in climbing stairs, muscle weakness, difficulty in walking, or fatigue. According to Halstead's criteria, 180 polio survivors suffered from post-polio syndrome, and the prevalence of post-polio syndrome in Kitakyushu was 18.0 per population of 100,000. CONCLUSIONS: This survey revealed the number of polio survivors, and the prevalence of post-polio syndrome in Kitakyushu, Japan. 相似文献

Sixty-eight primary liver grafts were analyzed to see whether adenine nucleotides (AN: ATP, ADP, and AMP) or purine catabolites (PC: adenosine, inosine, hypoxanthine, and xanthine) of tissue or effluent can predict primary graft nonfunction. AN, PC, and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, oxidized form (NAD+) of the tissue before (pretransplant) and after graft reperfusion (post-transplant) and of the effluent were analyzed. The graft outcome was classified into two groups (group A: successful, n=64; group B: primary nonfunctioning, n=4). No significant differences were observed in pretransplant measurements between groups A and B, whereas ATP, ADP, total AN, total AN+total PC (T) and NAD+, in post-transplant tissues, were significantly higher in group A. Xanthine in the effluent was significantly higher in group B than in group A. ATP, ADP, total AN, T, and NAD+ in post-transplant tissue were significantly associated with primary graft nonfunction by logistic regression analysis. 相似文献

The authors report four cases of familial pituitary adenomas from two unrelated families. No clinical or biochemical evidence of multiple endocrine neoplasia, type I (MEN-I) was demonstrated. Summary The present study was designed to clarify whether or not a difference between arterial and venous lactate (lactate) levels is useful for evaluation of mitochondrial function in ischemia-reperfused myocardium. In the first experiment, 12 dogs were divided into 2 groups: 10-min occlusion of the left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD) followed by 10-min reperfusion, or 30-min occlusion followed by 40-min reperfusion, were performed. The lactate levels in the femoral artery and the great cardiac vein were measured enzymatically. Lactate was reversed immediately after occlusion. Ten min and 20 min were required for the recovery of lactate in the 10-min-occlusion with 10-min-reperfusion, and 30-min-occlusion with 40-min-reperfusion groups, respectively. In the second experiment, 36 dogs were divided into 6 groups: 10-min occlusion of LAD; 10-min occlusion with 10-min reperfusion; 30-min occlusion; and 30-min occlusion with 10-, 20-, or 40-min reperfusion were performed. Mitochondria from normal and occluded or reperfused areas were prepared, and the respiratory function of the mitochondria was measured polarographically. No significant decreases in the mitochondrial function were observed in the 10-min-occlusion, and 10-min-occlusion with 10-min-reperfusion groups. On the other hand, respiratory function of mitochondria was impaired by 30-min occlusion and was not improved by 10- or 20-min reperfusion. Significant recovery in the mitochondrial function was observed after 40-min reperfusion. That is, differing recovery time courses between lactate and the mitochondrial function were observed. 相似文献

Bruch's membrane exists between the retinal pigment epithelium and the choriocapillary endothelium. Its structure is very complicated, having five sublayers containing basement membranes of retinal pigment epithelium and choriocapillary endothelium, outer and inner collagenous layers, and a central elastic layer. In the development of Bruch's membrane in normal mice, both basement membranes are created first. Secondarily, collagen fibers are accumulated in the space between these basement membranes and then form a collagenous layer. Finally, the elastic layer elaborated in the collagenous layer separates this into outer and inner collagenous layers. Brachymorphic mice have a disorder in the sulfation pathway, resulting in undersulfation. Consequently, in Bruch's membrane of brachymorphic mice, the expression of decorin, a small proteoglycan containing chondroitin sulfate and an indispensable component in collagen assembly, is at a very low level. It is clear that hypoplasia of the collagenous layer in Bruch's membrane of brachymorphic mice induces a disorder in the following formation of the elastic layer. These findings suggest that the formation of the collagenous layer, regulated with acidic glycoconjugates such as decorin, is important in the development of Bruch's membrane. 相似文献
