A correlation between apoptosis and proliferation in astrocytomas and oligodendrogliomas, but not in glioblastomas, has been previously reported. An index for apoptosis and proliferation was established for each tumor in a series of 20 brain metastases, and its correlation was studied using the Spearman rank correlation test. Apoptosis index (AI) ranged between 1 and 78% (mean ± SD: 11.48 ± 16.4). Proliferation index (PI) ranged between 2.4 and 21% (mean ± SD: 8.23 ± 4.8). When the relationship between AI and PI was studied, a clear correlation was found (r: 0.8965, 95% CI: 0.74–0.95; P < 0.0001). Therefore, it is concluded that a clear correlation exists between proliferation and apoptosis in secondary tumors of the brain.  相似文献

Chylous ascites is an uncommon clinical entity associated with lymphatic obstruction usually caused by underlying malignancy. The authors describe a patient with chylous ascites caused by constrictive pericarditis in the absence of mechanical lymphatic obstruction. Pathophysiological mechanisms for the development of chylous ascites in constrictive pericarditis include augmented lymph production and high impedance to lymph drainage caused by central venous hypertension. After pericardiectomy, the patient's ascites and edema resolved. Constrictive pericarditis should be considered a rare but potentially curable cause of chylous ascites.  相似文献

Syntaxin 1 binds to several proteins of the synaptic terminal and is a central component in the pathway of protein–protein interactions that underlies docking and fusion of synaptic vesicles. Molecular studies revealed the occurrence of two isoforms, syntaxin 1A and syntaxin 1B, which coexpress in neural tissues. However, they display differential expression patterns in endocrine cell types. We generated isoform-specific antibodies that were used in Western blotting and immunocytochemical studies. First, we confirmed the sole presence of syntaxin 1A in endocrine pituitary cells. Second, we found distinctive immunolabelling patterns of each isoform in the rat olfactory system, hippocampus, striatum, thalamus and spinal cord. In addition, the principal white matter commissures displayed distinct immunoreactivity for each isoform. This report shows, for the first time, major differences between the distributions of syntaxin 1A and syntaxin 1B isoforms in the rat central nervous system.  相似文献

The xanthine, hypoxanthine, and total oxypurine levels were determined in the CSF of 28 hydrocephalic patients (age from newborn to 2 years) and 8 healthy controls using HPLC. The Evans' index, the mean weekly increase in cranial circumference, and the intracranial pressure were also measured. Of the hydrocephalic patients 13 were self-compensated and the other 15 had a shunt implanted during the course of the study. The mean xanthine, hypoxanthine, and total oxypurine levels in the normal children were 5.20, 5.94, and 11.29 mol/l, respectively. In the self-compensated hydrocephalics these levels were 5.17, 5.71, and 10.79 mol/l, respectively. In the noncompensated hydrocephalics, they were 9.90, 9.91, and 19.82 mol/l. The differences between the latter group and the first two are statistically significant (P<0.001). The mean Evans' index and the mean weakly increase in cranial circumference in the self-compensated hydrocephalics were 0.35 and 0.25 cm, respectively. In the noncompensated hydrocephalics, they were 0.55 and 0.95 cm. The differences between the two groups are statistically significant (P<0.001). Two weeks after implantation of shunts in the noncompensated cases, the mean xanthine, hypoxanthine, and total oxypurine levels fell to 4.22, 4.57, and 8.80 mol/l, respectively. These changes are statistically significant (P<0.001). We think that the two criteria (clinical and biochemical) are equally useful for the prediction of self-compensation in hydrocephalic children and that the oxypurine values after shunt implantation can be used to monitor progress in noncompensated cases.  相似文献

A biochemist involved in the planning of the Workshop on International Cooperation for the Human Genome Project reports on the meeting's accomplishments. The October 1988 workshop, held in Valencia, Spain, under international auspices, brought together scientists from 24 countries to discuss the present status and future prospects of the Human Genome Project. While the overall objective of the meeting was to promote international cooperation in mapping the human genome, ethical issues also were discussed. Most participants agreed on the need to establish international rules to guide the project, but believed that controls on research could be imposed only by scientists. The workshop ended with the issuing of the Valencia Declaration on the Human Genome Project, the text of which is included with Grisolia's report.  相似文献

We conducted a longitudinal study about daily variation of Wistar male rats' behavior in the elevated plus-maze (EPM) evaluated in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 6th, 12th, and 18th months of life. Animals were submitted to the plus-maze in 12 sessions at 2-h intervals (n=72, 6 per time point). Spontaneous rest-activity rhythm of four animals was assessed by observation of 24-h videotape records. Time series were analyzed by Cosinor method. Behavioral rates on the six occasions and in light and dark phases were compared by means of two-way ANOVA with repeated measures. Exploratory behavior in EPM was smaller in the light phase and in older animals. Higher values of open and closed arms exploration were observed in the first and third months of the dark phase, and in the first month of the light phase. Adjustment to the 24-h period was significant at all stages for rest-activity data, number of entries in closed arms, and time on center, and for three to five stages for open-arm exploration. In general, 24 h variability was more pronounced in younger animals compared with older ones. The present study showed that: (1). a significant amount of total variability of the behavioral indexes analyzed could be attributed to 24 h variation, (2). light/dark phases differences in EPM exploration were present at all developmental stages, (3). older Wistar rats explored less the EPM and were less active in their home cage compared with younger ones, and (4). behavioral indexes (EPM) decrease was phase related and partially related to a reorganization of rest-activity rhythm.  相似文献

One of the most visually striking patterns in the early developing embryo is somite segmentation. Somites form as repeated, periodic structures in pairs along nearly the entire caudal vertebrate axis. The morphological process involves short- and long-range signals that drive cell rearrangements and cell shaping to create discrete, epithelialized segments. Key to developing novel strategies to prevent somite birth defects that involve axial bone and skeletal muscle development is understanding how the molecular choreography is coordinated across multiple spatial scales and in a repeating temporal manner. Mathematical models have emerged as useful tools to integrate spatiotemporal data and simulate model mechanisms to provide unique insights into somite pattern formation. In this short review, we present two quantitative frameworks that address the morphogenesis from segment to somite and discuss recent data of segmentation and epithelialization.  相似文献

A rise in the incidence of meningococcal disease has occurred in Spain in recent years, especially in some regions in the north-west of the country. Most cases have been caused by meningococci characterised as Neisseria meningitidis C:2b:P1.2,5. A total of 107 C:2b:P1.2,5 meningococcal isolates (60 from patients and 47 from carriers) and 12 isolates showing related antigenic combinations (C:2b:NST, C:2b:P1.2, C:2b:P1.5, C:NT:P1.2,5) was analysed by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis to determine the genetic variability of the epidemic and related strains. Endonucleases BglII and NheI were used to cut chromosomal DNA. When BglII was used, most of the C:2b:P1.2,5 isolates showed the same pulsotype regardless of whether they were from clinical cases or carriers. Isolates showing the principal profile after digestion with endonuclease BglII were analysed with NheI. Four pulsotypes were identified, of which two were found in only one isolate each. The major profiles (1 and 2) showed differential distribution among clinical and carrier isolates; pulsotype 1 was the most frequent among clinical isolates. However, the proportions of isolates showing profiles 1 and 2 were similar among carrier isolates. This could indicate that there are two variants of the C:2b:P1.2,5 strain with differing pathogenicity.  相似文献

Summary In this paper the survival and the histopathology of normal and thymectomized mice infected with some Arenoviruses is reported.Normal newborn mice infected intracerebrally with Junín, Machupo, Tacaribe and Amaparí virus showed similar histopathological changes in the central nervous system characterized by choroiditis, glial hyperplasia, vasculitis and perivasculitis with infiltration of lymphocytic cells.In thymectomized mice infected with Junín, Machupo and Tacaribe virus, there was no evidence of disease, survival reached almost 100% and no pathological alterations were observed in the brain.In contrast, thymectomized mice infected with Amaparí virus showed the same percentage of mortality and similar histopathological changes as non-thymectomized animals.This research was supported by Grant N 4908/71 from Consejo National de Investigaciones Cientificas y Técnicas, República Argentina, and by funds from Comisión Coordinadora para el estudio y lucha contra la Fiebre Hemorrágica Argentina de la Subseeretaría de Salud Pública, República Argentina.Chairman Department of Pathology, National Academy of Medicine, República Argentina.Members of Research Career from the Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Cientificas y Técnicas, República Argentina.  相似文献
