Dirofilariasis is a zoonosis affecting dogs and cats. It was transmitted to man by mosquito bites. Human dirofilariasis is rare. We report a case of 4-year-old girl presented with a subcutaneous palmar nodule of the hand. Surgical excision shows a nodule encircling the forth flexor tendon. The histological examination established the diagnosis by the presence of an adult worm identified as Dirofilaria repens. Surgical excision was curative.  相似文献

Nautilus Machine (NM) and Elastic Resistance (ER) have gained considerable popularity among athletes and recreational lifters seeking to increase muscle strength. However, there is controversy concerning the use of ER for increasing muscle hypertrophy and strength among healthy-trained individuals. The aim of the study was to compare the effect of repeated near maximal contractions by ER/NM on indicators of muscle damage including: maximal strength decrement (MVIC), rate of muscle soreness (DOMS), concentration of plasma creatine kinase (CK) and increased high muscle signal on T2 weighted images using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Nine healthy male subjects completed two modalities of exercise (5 sets × 10RM ER/NM) in a counterbalance cross-over study design with three weeks “wash-out” period between experiments. The MVIC was measured and DOMS rated and recorded for 4 consecutive days while blood samples were collected on day 1, 3, 5 and 7. Prior to and forty eight hours after completion of each mode of exercise, subjects underwent MRI scanning. The average of applied forces demonstrated significantly higher value for NM compared with ER (362 ± 34.2 N vs 266.73 ± 44.6 N respectively) throughout the 5 sets of dynamic exercise (all p < 0.05). However, the indicators of muscle damage (T2 relaxation time, DOMS, MVIC and serum CK) exhibited a very similar response across both modes of training. Plasma CK increased significantly following both modes of training with the peak value on Day 3 (p < 0.05). The time course of muscle soreness reached a significant level after both modes of exercise and showed a peak value on the 2nd day (p < 0.05). The T2 relaxation time demonstrated a statistically significant increase following ER and NM compared with the pre-test value (p < 0.05). The similarity of these responses following both the ER and NM exercise training session suggests that both modes of training provide a similar training stress; despite a considerably lower external force generation during ER. The importance of these findings is underlined by the fact that exercise-induced muscle damage has been shown to be the underlying mechanism of further muscle hypertrophy.

Aim: To investigate the reversibility of the effect of nandrolone decanoate (ND) on sperm parameters after discontinuing the drug. Methods: Three groups of rats received peanut oil (control), low and high doses of ND for 14 weeks, respectively. Each group was divided into subgroups A and B, in which rats were killed 14 and 28 weeks after initiating the injection, respectively. Results: Sperm count and motile sperm fraction were decreased in the subgroups A and B that received low and high doses of ND in comparison with the controls A and B, respectively. The sperm count and motile sperm fraction increased in the subgroups B that received low and high doses of ND in comparison with their corresponding subgroups A. The number of normal morphology sperm was decreased significantly in subgroups A receiving low and high doses of ND in comparison with the control subgroup A. However, this parameter was not decreased in subgroups B receiving low and high doses in comparison with the control subgroup B. The normal sperm morphology did not show any significant differences in the subgroups B in comparison with their corresponding subgroups A. Conclusion: The 14-week injection of low and high doses of ND decreases sperm quality and quantity in rats. These parameters were improved after discontinuing ND, but not recovered completely even when they are left untreated for 14 weeks.  相似文献

Objective: Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a devastating condition causing neuronal loss. A key challenge in treatment of SCI is how to retain neurons after injury. Valproic acid (VPA) is a drug recently has been appreciated for its neuroprotective and neurotrophic properties in various SCI models. In this study the role of VPA was assessed in organotypic spinal cord slice culture following the contusion.

Design: The lumbar enlargement of adult rat was cut transversely and slices were cultured. Seven days after culturing, injury was induced by dropping a 0.5 gram weight from 3?cm height on the slice surface. One hour after injury, the VPA was administered at 1, 5 and 10?µM concentrations. Afterward, at day 1 and 3 post injury (DPI: 1 and 3) propidium iodide (PI) and immunohistochemistry staining were performed to evaluate the cell death, NeuN and β-Tubulin expression, respectively.

Results: The PI staining of slices at DPI: 1 and 3 following treatment with VPA revealed significant decreases in the cell death in all three concentrations comparing to the non-treated group. Also immunostaining showed VPA only at 5?µM concentration considerably rescued ventral horn’ MNs from death and protected the neuronal integrity.

Conclusion: The results of this study indicate applying VPA one hour after injury can prevent the death of a majority of cells, importantly MNs and preserve the neuronal integrity. Since the first 24 hours after SCI is a critical period for employing any treatment, VPA can be considered as an option for further evaluation.  相似文献
