BACKGROUND: Physical inactivity is related to an increased risk of certain chronic diseases. The aim here was to evaluate how physical activity and social status in adolescence are associated with physical inactivity in adulthood. METHODS: The sample comprised 3664 males and 4130 females who answered questions on physical activity and social status at 14 and 31 years of age in follow-up surveys of the Northern Finland birth cohort of 1966. Associations between explanatory factors and physical inactivity in adulthood were analyzed using multivariable logistic regression. RESULTS: Infrequent participation in sports after school hours at 14 years of age and, in males, additionally a low grade in school sports, was associated with physical inactivity at the age of 31 years, independent of social circumstances in adulthood. Low social class of the childhood family was associated with physical inactivity in adolescence but not with inactivity at 31 years of age. Poor school achievement in adolescence was associated with adult inactivity independent of adolescent physical activity. CONCLUSION: Infrequent participation in sports, a low grade in school sports, and poor school achievements in adolescence were associated with physical inactivity in adulthood. Participation in sports is to be strongly supported among all adolescents because of its long-term beneficial effects on adult health through its tendency to reduce the probability of adult inactivity.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Infant cry characteristics reflect the integrity of the central nervous system. Previous studies have shown that preterm infants and infants with neurological conditions have different cry characteristics such as fundamental frequency compared to healthy full-term infants. Cry characteristics of preterm infants after the first year of life have not been studied. AIMS: The aim of this study was to assess the quality of cry in 1 1/2-year-old very-low-birth-weight infants (VLBWI, < or =1500 g at birth). STUDY SUBJECTS AND DESIGN: Study groups included 21 VLBWI and 25 healthy full-term controls. Thirty seconds of pain cry after vaccination was recorded at well-baby clinics. The first cry utterance was acoustically analyzed using Praat software. The quality of cry was compared between the groups. In addition, the association of cry quality to patient characteristics, to developmental outcome, and to findings in brain imaging studies of the VLBWI was studied. RESULTS: The cry response was elicited in 20 of the 21 VLBWI and in 20 out of 25 full-term infants. VLBWI had higher minimum fundamental frequency and fourth formant values. Patient characteristics that were associated with cry quality were 5-min Apgar scores, the occurrence of bronchopulmonary dysplasia, Bayley Psychomotor Index scores at 12 months, and current weight and head circumference. CONCLUSIONS: Differences found between the study groups were not explained primarily by brain pathology or by patient characteristics, so it seems that prematurity has an impact on cry quality still at the age of 1 1/2 years.  相似文献

Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the ability of n-alkenyl succinic anhydrides (n-ASAs) to improve the film-forming characteristics of a novel coating polymer, potato starch acetate degree of substitution 2.8 (SA). n-ASAs were also applied to improve the otherwise brittle properties of ethyl cellulose (EC) aqueous dispersion (Aquacoat®) and EC solvent-based films. Methods: The effectiveness of two n-ASAs, 2-octenyl succinic anhydride (OSA) and 2-dodecen-1-ylsuccinic anhydride were evaluated as plasticizers. Mechanical properties, both water vapor and drug permeabilities, and glass transition temperatures of the cast free films were measured. Triethyl citrate and dibutyl sebacate were used as reference plasticizers. Results: The long hydrocarbon chain of n-ASA, with its accessible carbonyl groups, enabled a strong plasticization effect on the tested polymers. Due to the excellent mechanical properties (i.e., a tough film structure with considerable flexibility) and low permeability of the plasticized films, n-ASAs, and especially OSA proved to be an ideal plasticizer particularly for EC based coatings. Also, the EC aqueous dispersion plasticized with n-ASAs resulted in a markedly enhanced coalescence of the colloidal polymer particles, even at low drying temperatures. Conclusions: In applications where a coating with high flexibility is required, n-ASAs can be used as plasticizers at moderately high concentrations (up to 60–70%, w/w) without losing the high tensile strength, excellent toughness and low permeability of EC and SA films.  相似文献

We describe patient E.P. who occasionally perceives a ‘ghost' hand which copies the previous positions of the left hand with a 0.5–1 min time lag, but follows the movement patterns of the right hand. The symptoms started after an operation of a ruptured aneurysm, followed by an infarction of the right frontal lobe; E.P. also has a previously lesioned corpus callosum. Neuromagnetic recordings revealed that activity of the left secondary somatosensory cortex was strongly suppressed during the ghost arm percept, thereby providing an objective correlate for E.P.'s sensations. We conclude that simultaneous mental contents about body scheme may be based on neural information extracted at considerably different times, resulting in fragmentation of bodily awareness.  相似文献

AIMS: The aim of this study was to examine the prevalence of pre-eclampsia in Southern, Eastern, and Northern Finland, and the relationship between history of pre-eclampsia and maternal coronary artery disease (CAD) risk factors. METHODS AND RESULTS: Women aged 25-64 years, who participated in a cross-sectional population survey and had been pregnant (n=3650), were studied. The proportion of women who had ever had pre-eclampsia was lower in Southern (7.9%) compared with Northern Finland (13.9%) (P=0.001), but did not differ from Eastern Finland (11.1%). In the logistic regression model, the age-adjusted prevalence of pre-eclampsia was 1.92-fold in Northern (95% CI: 1.46-2.53, P<0.001) and 1.47-fold in Eastern Finland (95% CI: 1.11-1.96, P=0.008) compared with Southern Finland. The odds ratios (ORs) were 1.70 (95% CI: 1.21-2.38, P=0.002) and 1.16 (95% CI: 0.82-1.64, P=0.40), respectively, when adjusted for age at first birth, current age, parity, body mass index (BMI), increased blood cholesterol, hypertension, diabetes/impaired glucose tolerance, CAD, and mother's myocardial infarction. History of pre-eclampsia was associated with increased blood cholesterol, higher current BMI and blood pressure, and higher current prevalence of hypertension, diabetes/impaired glucose tolerance. CONCLUSIONS: Pre-eclampsia is most prevalent in the Northern part of Finland and could only be partly explained by higher prevalence of CAD risk factors.  相似文献

In interleukin-10 knock out (IL-10 KO) mice, accelerated clearance of pulmonary Chlamydia pneumoniae infection was observed. On the other hand, the histopathological changes in lung tissue were more pronounced in IL-10 KO mice at all time points after infection and repeated infection than in the wild type mice. Both ex vivo induced antigen-specific proliferation as well as production of proinflammatory cytokines by splenocytes were higher in IL-10 KO mice than in WT mice. Also, intrapulmonary proinflammatory cytokine levels were higher in IL-10 KO mice than in the WT mice. The lack of anti-inflammatory action of IL-10 is likely to contribute to the enhanced clearance but severe inflammation in this experimental model.  相似文献

Background: Animal studies have demonstrated neuroprotective properties of S-ketamine, but its effects on cerebral blood flow (CBF), metabolic rate of oxygen (CMRO2), and glucose metabolic rate (GMR) have not been comprehensively studied in humans.

Methods: Positron emission tomography was used to quantify CBF and CMRO2 in eight healthy male volunteers awake and during S-ketamine infusion targeted to subanesthetic (150 ng/ml) and anesthetic (1,500-2,000 ng/ml) concentrations. In addition, subjects' GMRs were assessed awake and during anesthesia. Whole brain estimates for cerebral blood volume were obtained using kinetic modeling.

Results: The mean +/- SD serum S-ketamine concentration was 159 +/- 21 ng/ml at the subanesthetic and 1,959 +/- 442 ng/ml at the anesthetic levels. The total S-ketamine dose was 10.4 mg/kg. S-ketamine increased heart rate (maximally by 43.5%) and mean blood pressure (maximally by 27.0%) in a concentration-dependent manner (P = 0.001 for both). Subanesthetic S-ketamine increased whole brain CBF by 13.7% (P = 0.035). The greatest regional CBF increase was detected in the anterior cingulate (31.6%; P = 0.010). No changes were detected in CMRO2. Anesthetic S-ketamine increased whole brain CBF by 36.4% (P = 0.006) but had no effect on whole brain CMRO2 or GMR. Regionally, CBF was increased in nearly all brain structures studied (greatest increase in the insula 86.5%; P < 0.001), whereas CMRO2 increased only in the frontal cortex (by 15.7%; P = 0.007) and GMR increased only in the thalamus (by 11.7%; P = 0.010). Cerebral blood volume was increased by 51.9% (P = 0.011) during anesthesia.  相似文献

Peanut allergy has been associated with the intake of soy milk or a soy formula. We studied the development of immunoglobulin E antibodies specific to soy and peanuts and of allergic reactions caused by peanuts, in children with confirmed cow's milk (CM) allergy fed either a soy formula or an extensively hydrolyzed formula (EHF). One hundred and seventy infants with documented CM allergy (CMA) were randomly assigned to receive either a soy formula or an EHF. The children were followed to the age of 4 yr. Peanut-specific immunoglobulin E was measured at the age of 4. A detailed history of the occurrence of allergic reactions caused by peanuts was recorded by the parents. Soy-specific immunoglobulin E antibodies were measured at the time of diagnosis and at the ages of 1, 2 and 4 yr. Immunoglobulin E antibodies to soy (> or =0.35 kU/l) were found in 22 of 70 children fed the soy formula, and in 14 of 70 of the children fed the EHF (p = 0.082). In an open challenge with soy at the age of 4, no immediate reactions were observed. One of 72 children from the soy group had a delayed reaction. immunoglobulin E antibodies to peanuts (> or =0.35 kU/l) were found in 21 of 70 children fed the soy formula and 17 of 69 infants fed the EHF (p = 0.717). The incidence of reported peanut allergy in the soy group was two of 72 (3%) and four of 76 (5%) in the EHF group (p = 0.68). Development of immunoglobulin E-associated allergy to soy and peanuts was rare in our study group of milk allergic children. The use of a soy formula during the first 2 yr of life did not increase the risk of development of peanut-specific immunoglobulin E antibodies or of clinical peanut allergy.  相似文献
