Characterization of genotypic determinants in HR-1 and HR-2 gp41 domains in individuals with persistent HIV viraemia under T-20

We analysed the genetic changes in gp41 in a population of 30 heavily pretreated HIV-1-infected patients failing on a T-20-containing salvage therapy. This study confirms the key role of the number of drugs presumed to be still effective associated with T-20 in the magnitude of the virological response. Our results suggest that only HR-1 sequencing is necessary to characterize resistance to T-20, and that HR-2 domain sequencing is probably not required.     

Two case reports of symptomatic visceral leishmaniasis in AIDS patients concomitant with immune reconstitution due to antiretroviral therapy

We report the first 2 cases of visceral leishmaniasis in AIDS patients, which ocurred a few d after initiating antiretroviral therapy. The report raises the question whether a rapid immune reconstitution may convert a latent visceral leishmaniasis into a symptomatic one.     

Immunoglobulin synthesis in hairy cell leukaemia. Ultrastructural immunocytochemical study of 3 cases

3 cases of hairy cell leukaemia were studied with ultrastructural immunocytochemical methods using an anti human Ig HRPO-Fab fragment. Ig were detected on the cell surface, in the perinuclear cisterna and endoplasmic reticulum of hairy cells. Evidence of Ig in these sites demonstrates a B-lymphoid differentiation of the leukaemic cells.     

Immunoelectronmicroscopic profile of intracytoplasmic immunoglobulins in B non Hodgkin's malignant lymphomas. Comparison with the normal pattern of B lymphoid cells

An immunoelectronmicroscopic method using Fab fragment of anti human IgG (H + L) has been employed to study the localization of cytoplasmic immunoglobulins in the tumoral cells of 12 B non Hodgkin's malignant lymphomas (B-M.L.). A comparison with normal homologous B lymphoid cells was performed on 10 non tumoral reactive lymph nodes. Immunostaining was observed in PNC, RER and Golgi complex. The criterions of differentiation were discussed in the different B-M.L.. Because of a granular hyaloplasmic immunostaining in normal and tumoral centroblasts and immunoblasts, monospecific antibodies against gamma, mu, alpha heavy chains were used to rule out a non specific uptake. Presence of mu heavy chain was discussed as an argument for immunoglobulin free ribosomal synthesis.     

Cytomegalovirus viremia in HIV-infected patients treated with zidovudine

We followed the course of cytomegalovirus (CMV) viremia in 65 patients treated with zidovudine for symptomatic HIV-1 infection. Blood samples were tested for the presence of CMV before initiation of treatment and every 3 months thereafter. 13 patients (20%) showed a positive CMV viremia at initiation of treatment. After 3 months of therapy, only 2 patients (3%) remained viremic. However, the frequency of CMV viremia increased from the 6th month of treatment and 28 (43%) of our patients showed a persistence of, or conversion to, positive viremia during the course of treatment. CMV viremia was associated with a decline in the patients' clinical state in 79% of the cases. In contrast, among the 37 patients, who remained negative for CMV viremia, 73% did not show a progression of the HIV-associated disease. The results suggest that CMV viremia could be considered as a useful marker for HIV-associated disease and its progression as well as for the efficacy of therapy.
