ras gene mutations in oral cancer in eastern India

Oral tumor specimens (n = 50) from eastern Indian population were studied for the presence of mutations in the H-, K- and N-ras genes using selective oligodeoxynucleotide hybridization and restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis of polymerase chain reaction-amplified products. Mutations in H- and K-ras genes were observed at a frequency of 28 and 33%, respectively, whereas no N-ras mutation was noticed.     

Bilateral lingual nerve injury following the use of the laryngeal mask airway

We report a 27-year-old patient who developed transient bilateral lingual nerve palsy following the use of a laryngeal mask to maintain the airway during a general anaesthetic for arthroscopy of the wrist.     

Alcohol consumption among middle-aged and elderly men: a community study from western India

AIMS: To assess the prevalence and pattern of alcohol use in a middle-aged and elderly population in Mumbai, India. METHODS: 50 220 men aged >/=45 years from the lower and lower-middle section of the general population were interviewed. RESULTS: 18.8% were currently consuming alcoholic beverages, of whom 32.8% drank on at least 6 days per week. The most popular beverage was locally distilled products of fruits and grain (country liquor). Seventy-five per cent of the consumers of country liquor would consume over 53 g of ethanol on a day when they drank, with 46.6% of these doing so on at least 6 days per week. CONCLUSIONS: Abstinence, and also heavy and frequent use of alcohol, are common in this population and the latter is likely to have significant public health implications.     

Generation of CD8+ cytotoxic T lymphocytes against breast cancer cells by stimulation with mammaglobin-A-pulsed dendritic cells

Mammaglobin-A is exclusively expressed by breast cancer cells. Thus, mammaglobin-A-specific T cell immune responses may be useful for the design of new breast cancer-specific immunotherapies. We show herein that CD8+ T cells generated against recombinant mammaglobin-A-pulsed dendritic cells display a marked cytotoxic activity against mammaglobin-A-positive breast cancer cell lines. This study indicates the immunotherapeutic potential of this novel antigen for the treatment of breast cancer.
