Nickel sensitivity in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease

Objective: Various foods play important role in the pathogenesis of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). These foods are shown to increase gastroesophageal reflux symptoms via various mechanisms and majority of these foods also contain nickel. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the relationship between Nickel sensitivity and GERD.

Material and methods: Fifty-four patients diagnosed with GERD and 50 healthy volunteers who were admitted to our gastroenterology outpatient clinic were took part in the study. European standard patch test series, nickel-containing test units and corticosteroids were applied to the patient body; upper back. Evaluation was performed according to the scheme of the International Contact Dermatitis Research Group (ICDRG). The positive and negative reactions were recorded at the hours of 48, 72 and 96. Following the test implementations, 7?days later, the tests were reevaluated for late reactions. Statistics package for Social Sciences (SPSS) 17 package program was used for statistical evaluation and results of tests were compared between groups with the Chi-squared test. p?Results: Individuals in both groups were statistically similar in terms of age and gender. Nickel sensitivity was found to be positive in 48.2 and %22 of the GERD patients and control group, respectively. Difference between groups was statistically significant (p?=?0.008).

Conclusions: Nickel sensitivity was significantly higher in GERD patients compared to the control group. In addition to imbalance between defensive and aggressive forces of the esophagus, there seems to be an association between nickel sensitivity and GERD.     

Novel bis-crown ethers and their sodium complexes as antimicrobial agent: synthesis and spectroscopic characterizations

A series of new compounds containing formyl and imine group were synthesized. New formyl-substituted compounds were prepared by the reaction of 1,2-bis(bromomethyl)benzene with benzaldehyde derivatives in the presence of NaOH. New bis-crown ether imine compounds were prepared by the condensation of corresponding aldehydes with 4′-aminobenzo-15-crown-5. Sodium complexes of the bis-crown ethers form crystalline 2:1 (Na⁺:ligand) stoichiometries were also been synthesized. The prepared compounds were structurally confirmed by analytical and spectral data and evaluated for their antibacterial and antifungal activities. The results show that the antibacterial activity of compounds including o-methoxy group was significantly higher against S. epidermis compared to the other studied antimicrobial group.     

Histological evidence concerning the osseointegration of titanium implants in the fractured rabbit femur

Stabilization of the broken bone is achieved using biocompatible materials. Since histology is still considered the gold standard technique for the assessment of bone formation around metallic implants, this report investigated the titanium implant integration in the accidentally broken bone in rabbits. The experimental protocol was reviewed and approved by the Ethical Committee of the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy Oradea, Romania. Holes were drilled in the diaphysis of the femur, and titanium implants were inserted in the created bone defect. In two subjects, fractures occurred on days two and three after the metallic alloy implantation. The other two rabbits presented no fractures following the surgical procedure. The rabbits were euthanized and the bones (with metallic implants) were harvested for histopathological investigation. Following decalcification, the bone samples were processed using the standard paraffin technique and stained by Goldner’s trichrome procedure. In subjects with a perfect immobilization of the titanium implants, the osseointegration occurred with minimal callus formation (i.e. primary cortical healing). In rabbits with bone fractures, the callus was more exuberant. A progressive replacement of the granulation tissue with hyaline cartilage and woven bone occurred soon after. The former aspects suggested an indirect metaplasia in the created callus. In all subjects, no inflammatory cells were identified in the created callus. The bone regeneration occurred either by primary cortical healing (in perfectly immobilized titanium implants) or by a process similar to the endochondral ossification (in poorly immobilized titanium implants following accidental post-implantation bones fracture).     

The effect of oral contraceptives on current wheezing in young women

BackgroundEmerging evidence suggests that sex steroid hormones may influence respiratory symptoms. The existing literature about the role of oral contraceptive pill (OCP) on respiratory disease is scarce and conflicting especially during the adolescent period. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effect of OCPs on current wheezing among adolescents and young adults.MethodsA questionnaire was administered face-to-face to adolescents and young women by a physician. The questionnaire included ISAAC survey-comprised questions on ever wheezing, current wheezing, allergic diseases, smoking history (active or passive), and family history of allergic diseases and questions on OCP usage status. The effect of OCPs on wheezing was evaluated by logistic regression analysis.ResultsA total of 487 subjects aged between 11.3 and 25.6 years participated in the study and 196 (40.2%) reported that they had used OCPs. 7.4% of the participants had physician-diagnosed asthma and 10.3% of them were active smokers. It was detected that OCPs were associated with increased risk for current wheezing (odds ratio, 2.36; 95% CI, 1.25–4.47 adjusted for asthma and current smoker) and this risk was related with the usage during the past year.ConclusionYoung women taking oral contraceptives had a higher rate of current wheezing, suggesting that sex steroids may be of importance for respiratory health.     

Retroperitoneal Fibrosis Secondary to Different Etiologies (Hemilaminectomy and Hypothyroidism): Reports of Two Cases

Retroperitoneal fibrosis (RF) is a clinical entity characterized by the progressive proliferation of connective tissue that rarely forms a mass involving the periaortic area of the abdomen, which may be idiopathic as well as a result of an inflammatory process after aneurysmal dilatation of the aorta. This fibrotic tissue may cover both aorta and iliac arteries, reach the retroperitoneum and surrounding ureters, and cause serious obstructions and renal insufficiency in three-quarters of patients. Most of the patients are known to have atherosclerosis and local inflammation against the antigens of the plaques. A systemic autoimmune disease presenting with retroperitoneal fibrosis seems to be pronounced more frequently nowadays because of the elevated acute-phase reactant levels, positive autoantibodies, and concurrent autoimmune diseases affecting other organs in majority of the diagnosed patients. Ultrasonography, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, positron emission tomography, and retroperitoneal biopsy are useful in diagnosing and assessing the full extent of the disease. Surgical interventions such as ureterolysis and aneurysm repair are frequently performed, but medical therapy including steroids and immunosuppressants is often needed because of the inflammatory and chronic-relapsing nature of the disease.

In this paper, we described two cases diagnosed with RF secondary to hemilaminectomy and hypothyroidism, and we summarized the literature related to RF.
