Three cases of androgen-dependent disease associated with myotonic dystrophy

Three cases of androgen-dependent disease in females with myotonic dystrophy are described. Serum androgens in individuals affected by myotonic dystrophy are known to be lower on average than in normal controls. Despite this these three females developed diseases that are androgen dependent, including acne, hidradenitis suppurativa, androgenetic alopecia and keratosis pilaris. These cases support the hypothesis that the peripheral response to androgens rather than absolute circulating levels of androgens is important in androgen-dependent conditions.     

Sex differences in anatomic measures of interhemispheric connectivity: correlations with cognition in women but not men

A robust sex difference in the splenium of the corpus callosum, reflecting greater interhemispheric connectivity in women, was observed on magnetic resonance images from 114 individuals. In addition, bulbosity of the corpus callosum correlated with better cognitive performance in women but not in men, indicating that the degree of interhemispheric connectivity has different implications for men and women. These findings were based on a new image analysis technique which allows investigation of local variability in brain morphology.      

Adult-onset Still''s disease with atypical cutaneous features

INTRODUCTION: The diagnosis of adult-onset Still's disease (AOSD) can be very difficult. There are no specific tests and reliance is usually placed on a symptom complex and the well described typical rash seen in most patients. In recent years, however, other cutaneous manifestations of AOSD have been reported but these are not so well known. OBSERVATIONS: We report a patient with urticaria and fixed plaques and review the other 'atypical' cutaneous findings associated with AOSD. CONCLUSIONS: The diagnosis of AOSD can be made in the absence of the typical Still's rash but in the presence of other atypical cutaneous features.
