Objective:

Borderline and antisocial personality disorders (PDs) share common clinical features (impulsivity, aggressiveness, substance use disorders [SUDs], and suicidal behaviours) that are greatly overrepresented in prison populations. These disorders have been associated biologically with testosterone and cortisol levels. However, the associations are ambiguous and the subject of controversy, perhaps because these heterogeneous disorders have been addressed as unitary constructs. A consideration of profiles of people, rather than of exclusive diagnoses, might yield clearer relationships.

Methods:

In our study, multiple correspondence analysis and cluster analysis were employed to identify subgroups among 545 newly convicted inmates. The groups were then compared in terms of clinical features and biological markers, including levels of cortisol, testosterone, estradiol, progesterone, and sulfoconjugated dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA-S).

Results:

Four clusters with differing psychiatric, criminal, and biological profiles emerged. Clinically, one group had intermediate scores for each of the tested clinical features. Another group comprised people with little comorbidity. Two others displayed severe impulsivity, PD, and SUD. Biologically, cortisol levels were lowest in the last 2 groups and highest in the group with less comorbidity. In keeping with previous findings reported in the literature, testosterone was higher in a younger population with severe psychiatric symptoms. However, some apparently comparable behavioural outcomes were found to be related to distinct biological profiles. No differences were observed for estradiol, progesterone, or DHEA-S levels.

Conclusions:

The results not only confirm the importance of biological markers in the study of personality features but also demonstrate the need to consider the role of comorbidities and steroid coregulation.  相似文献

Memory retrieval is believed to involve a disparate network of areas, including medial prefrontal and medial temporal cortices, but the mechanisms underlying their coordination remain elusive. One suggestion is that oscillatory coherence mediates inter‐regional communication, implicating theta phase and theta‐gamma phase‐amplitude coupling in mnemonic function across species. To examine this hypothesis, we used non‐invasive whole‐head magnetoencephalography (MEG) as participants retrieved the location of objects encountered within a virtual environment. We demonstrate that, when participants are cued with the image of an object whose location they must subsequently navigate to, there is a significant increase in 4–8 Hz theta power in medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), and the phase of this oscillation is coupled both with ongoing theta phase in the medial temporal lobe (MTL) and perceptually induced 65–85 Hz gamma amplitude in medial parietal cortex. These results suggest that theta phase coupling between mPFC and MTL and theta‐gamma phase‐amplitude coupling between mPFC and neocortical regions may play a role in human spatial memory retrieval. © 2014 The Authors. In this study, we determined, by atomic absorption spectrophotometry, the potassium amount leached by soaking or boiling foods identified by children suffering from chronic renal failure as “pleasure food” and that they cannot eat because of their low-potassium diet, and evaluated whether addition of sodium polystyrene sulfonate resin (i.e. Kayexalate®) during soaking or boiling modulated potassium loss. A significant amount of potassium content was removed by soaking (16% for chocolate and potato, 26% for apple, 37% for tomato and 41% for banana) or boiling in a large amount of water (73% for potato). Although Kayexalate® efficiently dose-dependently removed potassium from drinks (by 48% to 73%), resin addition during soaking or boiling did not eliminate more potassium from solid foods. Our results therefore provide useful information for dietitians who elaborate menus for people on potassium-restricted diets and would give an interesting alternative to the systematic elimination of all potassium-rich foods from their diet.  相似文献

Rhesus glycoproteins (Rh50) have been shown to be ammonia transporters in many species from bacteria to human. They are involved in various physiological processes including acid excretion and pH regulation. Rh50 proteins can also provide a structural link between the cytoskeleton and the plasma membranes that maintain cellular integrity. Although ammonia plays essential roles in the nervous system, in particular at glutamatergic synapses, a potential role for Rh50 proteins at synapses has not yet been investigated. To better understand the function of these proteins in vivo, we studied the unique Rh50 gene of Drosophila melanogaster, which encodes two isoforms, Rh50A and Rh50BC. We found that Drosophila Rh50A is expressed in larval muscles and enriched in the postsynaptic regions of the glutamatergic neuromuscular junctions. Rh50 inactivation by RNA interference selectively in muscle cells caused muscular atrophy in larval stages and pupal lethality. Interestingly, Rh50-deficiency in muscles specifically increased glutamate receptor subunit IIA (GluRIIA) level and the frequency of spontaneous excitatory postsynaptic potentials. Our work therefore highlights a new role for Rh50 proteins in the maintenance of Drosophila muscle architecture and synaptic physiology, which could be conserved in other species.  相似文献

Although free‐water diffusion reconstruction for diffusion‐weighted imaging (DWI) data can be applied to both single‐shell and multishell data, recent finding in synthetic data suggests that the free‐water indices from single‐shell acquisition should be interpreted with care, as they are heavily influenced by initialization parameters and cannot discriminate between free‐water and mean diffusivity modifications. However, whether using a longer multishell acquisition protocol significantly improve reconstruction for real human MRI data is still an open question. In this study, we compare canonical diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), single‐shell and multishell free‐water imaging (FW) indices derived from a short, clinical compatible diffusion protocol (b = 500 s/mm2, b = 1,000 s/mm2, 32 directions each) on their power to predict brain age. Age was chosen as it is well‐known to be related to widespread modification of the white matter and because brain‐age estimation has recently been found to be relevant to several neurodegenerative diseases. We used a previously developed and validated data‐driven whole‐brain machine learning pipeline to directly compare the precision of brain‐age estimates in a sample of 89 healthy males between 20 and 85 years old. We found that multishell FW outperform DTI indices in estimating brain age and that multishell FW, even when using low (500 ms2) b‐values secondary shell, outperform single‐shell FW. Single‐shell FW led to lower brain‐age estimation accuracy even of canonical DTI indices, suggesting that single‐shell FW indices should be used with caution. For all considered reconstruction algorithms, the most discriminant indices were those measuring free diffusion of water in the white matter.  相似文献

We have recently proposed a new optimization algorithm called SPARKLING (Spreading Projection Algorithm for Rapid K‐space sampLING) to design efficient compressive sampling patterns for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). This method has a few advantages over conventional non‐Cartesian trajectories such as radial lines or spirals: i) it allows to sample the k‐space along any arbitrary density while the other two are restricted to radial densities and ii) it optimizes the gradient waveforms for a given readout time. Here, we introduce an extension of the SPARKLING method for 3D imaging by considering both stacks‐of‐SPARKLING and fully 3D SPARKLING trajectories. Our method allowed to achieve an isotropic resolution of 600 μm in just 45 seconds for T2? ‐weighted ex vivo brain imaging at 7 Tesla over a field‐of‐view of 200 × 200 × 140 mm3 . Preliminary in vivo human brain data shows that a stack‐of‐SPARKLING is less subject to off‐resonance artifacts than a stack‐of‐spirals.  相似文献
