Background
Purified water for pharmaceutical purposes must be free of microbial contamination and pyrogens. Even with the additional sanitary and disinfecting treatments applied to the system (sequential operational stages), Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Pseudomonas alcaligenes, Pseudomonas picketti, Flavobacterium aureum, Acinetobacter lowffi and Pseudomonas diminuta were isolated and identified from a thirteen-stage purification system. To evaluate the efficacy of the chemical agents used in the disinfecting process along with those used to adjust chemical characteristics of the system, over the identified bacteria, the kinetic parameter of killing time (D-value) necessary to inactivate 90% of the initial bioburden (decimal reduction time) was experimentally determined. 相似文献12.

Cognitive enhancement can be defined as the use of drugs and/or other means with the
aim to improve the cognitive functions of healthy subjects in particular memory, attention, creativity
and intelligence in the absence of any medical indication. Currently, it represents one of the most
debated topics in the neuroscience community. Human beings always wanted to use substances to
improve their cognitive functions, from the use of hallucinogens in ancient civilizations in an attempt
to allow them to better communicate with their gods, to the widespread use of caffeine under various
forms (energy drinks, tablets, etc.), to the more recent development of drugs such as stimulants and glutamate activators.
In the last ten years, increasing attention has been given to the use of cognitive enhancers, but up to now there is still only
a limited amount of information concerning the use, effect and functioning of cognitive enhancement in daily life on
healthy subjects. The first aim of this paper was to review current trends in the misuse of smart drugs (also known as
Nootropics) presently available on the market focusing in detail on methylphenidate, trying to evaluate the potential risk
in healthy individuals, especially teenagers and young adults. Moreover, the authors have explored the issue of cognitive
enhancement compared to the use of Anabolic Androgenic Steroids (AAS) in sports. Finally, a brief overview of the

Although glucagon is known to stimulate the cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP)-mediated hepatocyte bile secretion, the precise mechanisms accounting for this choleretic effect are unknown. We recently reported that hepatocytes express the water channel aquaporin-8 (AQP8), which is located primarily in intracellular vesicles, and its relocalization to plasma membranes can be induced with dibutyryl cAMP. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that glucagon induces the trafficking of AQP8 to the hepatocyte plasma membrane and thus increases membrane water permeability. Immunoblotting analysis in subcellular fractions from isolated rat hepatocytes indicated that glucagon caused a significant, dose-dependent increase in the amount of AQP8 in plasma membranes (e.g., 102% with 1 micromol/L glucagon) and a simultaneous decrease in intracellular membranes (e.g., 38% with 1 micromol/L glucagon). Confocal immunofluorescence microscopy in cultured hepatocytes confirmed the glucagon-induced redistribution of AQP8 from intracellular vesicles to plasma membrane. Polarized hepatocyte couplets showed that this redistribution was specifically to the canalicular domain. Glucagon also significantly increased hepatocyte membrane water permeability by about 70%, which was inhibited by the water channel blocker dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). The inhibitors of protein kinase A, H-89, and PKI, as well as the microtubule blocker colchicine, prevented the glucagon effect on both AQP8 redistribution to hepatocyte surface and cell membrane water permeability. In conclusion, our data suggest that glucagon induces the protein kinase A and microtubule-dependent translocation of AQP8 water channels to the hepatocyte canalicular plasma membrane, which in turn leads to an increase in membrane water permeability. Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) may be a therapeutic adjunct to antibiotic treatment of neonatal infections. We examined the pharmacokinetics and safety of IVIG in human neonates. Thirty neonates with suspected sepsis were randomly assigned either to a treatment (receiving either 250, 500, or 1,000 mg/kg of IVIG plus antibiotics) or control (antibiotics alone) group. The 500 mg/kg dose produced a rise in total IgG for greater than 8 and in group B streptococcus (GBS) type-specific IgG for greater than 4-14 days. The type-specific antibody elevation varied with the amount of pathogen-specific antibody and dose of IVIG. Pharmacokinetic analysis suggests a Vdss of 42 ml/kg, Cl of 3.0 ml/kg/day, a biphasic elimination curve, and a terminal elimination half-life of 24.2 days. No toxicity was observed. Right-brain-damaged patients with left unilateral spatial neglect typically set the mid-point of horizontal lines to the right of the objective center. By contrast, healthy participants exhibit a reversed bias (pseudoneglect). The same effect has been described also when bisecting orthographic strings. In particular, for this latter kind of stimulus, some recent studies have shown that visuo-perceptual characteristics, like stimulus length, may contribute to both the magnitude and the direction bias of the bisection performance (Arduino et al. in Neuropsychologia 48:2140–2146, 2010). Furthermore, word stress was shown to modulate reading performances in both healthy participants, and patients with left spatial neglect and neglect dyslexia (Cubelli and Beschin in Brain Lang 95:319–326, 2005; Rusconi et al. in Neuropsychology 18:135–140, 2004). In Experiment I, 22 right-brain-damaged patients (11 with left visuo-spatial neglect) and 11 matched neurologically unimpaired control participants were asked to set the subjective mid-point of word letter strings, and of lines of comparable length. Most patients exhibited an overall disproportionate rightward bias, sensitive to stimulus length, and similar for words and lines. Importantly, in individual patients, biases differed according to stimulus type (words vs. lines), indicating that at least partly different mechanisms may be involved. In Experiment II, the putative effects on the bisection bias of ortho-phonological information (i.e., word stress endings), arising from the non-neglected right hand side of the stimulus were investigated. The orthographic cue induced a rightward shift of the perceived mid-point in both patients and controls, with short words stressed on the antepenultimate final sequence inducing a smaller rightward deviation with respect to short words stressed on the penultimate final sequence. In conclusion, partly different mechanisms, including both visuo-spatial and lexical factors, may support line and word bisection performance of right-brain-damaged patients with left spatial neglect, and healthy participants. 相似文献

We studied the plasma levels of coagulation inhibitors, of fibrinolysis and PDGF-AB, in patients with aseptic loosening of the hip replacement. 23 patients having loose hip prostheses were compared to patients having 15 stable hip prostheses, and 26 undergoing primary hip replacement. The levels of the coagulation inhibitors antithrombin III and protein C were determined by chromogenic assays. Fibrinolysis was evaluated by the changes in fibrin degradation products (D-dimer), determined by enzyme immunoassay, and in the plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1), by enzymatic assay. PDGF-AB was determined by enzyme immunoassay. In patients with failed prostheses, we found fibrinolysis activation, as shown by a statistically significant increase in D-dimer and a significant decrease of PAI-1. No significant differences were obseved in antithrombin III, protein C, and PDGF-AB. PAI-1 and D-dimer assays in failed prostheses may be useful for the pathogenetic evaluation, because the continuous inflammatory stimulus associated with fibrin deposition may also affect the systemic levels. 相似文献
